Deck Box Dungeons is a cooperative fantasy dungeon crawler played with physical cards, meeples and dice, with a companion app handling quests and encounters. One core set is intended for one or two players; groups of three or four need two core sets. The Steam app is free, but it is not the game by itself: Steam says the physical board game is required. If you want to avoid the app, the publisher also provides print-and-play quests.
What is Deck Box Dungeons?
The game puts players in a party of adventurers exploring a dungeon together. Players choose character, equipment and ability cards, then work to defeat monsters, resolve encounters and complete a quest objective. Publisher examples include escorting a priest through a ritual and defeating a troll threatening a town.
The official rules describe the goal as surviving the dungeon, slaying its monsters, completing the quest goal and having at least one party member survive. Quests can change the party’s objective, so the game is not simply a matter of clearing every enemy.

The publisher describes one core set for one or two players. For three or four players, it says to use two core sets; BoardGameGeek likewise lists one to two players, with a second copy allowing up to four. That extra-copy requirement is an important part of the purchase decision, not an optional upgrade for a four-player game.
#1 Best Overall
- DYNAMIC DUNGEON BUILDER: Modular tiles and evolving layouts create a new adventure every session. Double-sided cards become rooms or gear, so the map shifts as you explore. No two playthroughs are ever the same.
- TEAMWORK AND TACTICS: Choose from 8 unique heroes and work together in this fully co-op experience. Share loot, combine abilities, and coordinate strategies to survive enemies and defeat the boss.
- SMART CARD SYSTEM: Every card has two uses—expand the dungeon or boost your hero. This dual-purpose deck system drives deep decisions and exciting trade-offs with just three cards in hand.
- PLAY SOLO OR TOGETHER: Designed for 1–4 players, with solo rules built in. Whether you're flying solo or gathering your group, the scalable difficulty and quick sessions make it perfect for all setups.
- BIG FUN, SMALL BOX: Fast setup, quick turns, and replayable modes packed into a compact box. Perfect for weeknights, travel, or casual groups who want a dungeon crawler without the bulk or burnout.
With two copies, the publisher says players get more party-building combinations and the app can use both sides of map tiles when generating dungeons. If you are considering a larger group, budget for two physical sets as well as the device running the companion app.
What does the companion app do?
The app supports the physical game by managing quests and encounters. The publisher also says it can generate random quests and encounters, and that it allows rebalancing and later content additions. It is therefore part of the game experience, not a digital replacement for the cards, meeples and dice.
Steam lists the companion app as free, developed and published by Ariah Studios, and released on April 9, 2019. The listing explicitly states that the physical board game is required. The store page lists English interface support. Its listed system requirements include Windows XP minimum and Windows 7 or later recommended, but software and Steam compatibility details can change; check the live Steam listing before relying on them.

- Maladum is a fantasy miniatures board game set in the kingdoms of Enveron, a prosperous continent on a distant world
- Your players control small bands of Adventurers seeking their fortune across a detailed 3D gaming area (no glue or paint required)
- You must venture out from your camp, defeat your enemies, complete the objectives and get back to safety -- that last part is vital!
- When the Adventurers have taken their actions, the game fights back -- evil revenants shamble towards you, wandering beasts emerge from their lairs and fellow NPC Adventurers find themselves lost in the chaos, all controlled by the game's mechanics!
Can you play without the app?
Yes. The publisher offers print-and-play quests for players who cannot or do not want to use the app. The product page lists six story quests: Troll Trial, Chest Full of Gold, Escort the Priest, Collapsing Caves, Dark Magic and Phantoms. It also lists seven character quests: Aylen’s Tale, Delyth’s Saga, Dunael’s Story, Fianna’s Gambit, Naeva’s Yarn, Salmarin’s Dirge and The Ballad of Calder, plus a link to community-created quests.
These are downloadable quest materials, not evidence of a paid expansion line. The app remains the publisher’s supported route for app-managed and generated quests; the print-and-play option provides a way to use quests without relying on it.
What comes in the box?
The official component list includes:
- 4 Hero cards
- 4 Ability cards
- 5 Equipment cards
- 5 Enemy cards
- 15 Dungeon cards
- 12 Item cards
- 2 Rune cards
- 1 Player reference card
- 6 tracker cards
- 5 Player/NPC meeples
- 5 standard D6 dice
- 13 custom enemy dice
That is a compact physical kit paired with software for quest and encounter content. The deck-box format is the publisher’s stated design aim; the component list gives a clearer sense of the physical materials involved.

What should you know about the rules?
The English rules document is version 1.10.00 and dated August 24, 2019. It contains an important precedence note: “If card, quest, or app rules differ from those presented here, follow those rules instead.” In practice, the specific card, quest or app instruction takes priority over a conflicting general rule in the PDF.
The publisher’s product page lists English rules v1.10.00, Spanish v1.00.00 and French v1.02.00. If you need a particular language or want to check the latest available files, consult the publisher’s Deck Box Dungeons page.

It is most relevant for a group looking for a cooperative fantasy crawler that combines tabletop components with app-supported quests and encounters. The decision hinges on a few practical points:

- 5-Minute Dungeon is the most fun you can have in 5 minutes! You'll need teamwork to defeat each dungeon in only 5 minutes, and then take on the next intense challenge. Defeat all 6 bosses to win!
- Now with 25 more cards and the extra-challenging Dungeon Master: Final Form boss!
- Featuring a free timer app for Android and Apple devices, with six different themed narrators!
- Easy to learn, quick to teach: Match your cards to each symbol in the dungeon deck to win! 5-Minute Dungeon is perfect for teams of 2-5 players aged 8+.
- Includes: 275 Cards, 5 Double-Sided Hero Mats (10 Heroes Total), 3 Double-Sided Boss Mats (6 Bosses Total)
- Consider it if: your group wants shared dungeon objectives, physical cards and dice, and is comfortable using an app for quests and encounters.
- Plan for two copies if: three or four people will play. One set is described for one or two players.
- It may be less suitable if: you want a fully self-contained box experience with no digital support at all. Print-and-play quests offer an offline alternative, but the app is central to the publisher’s quest and encounter system.
This is a product overview, not a hands-on verdict: the available product information establishes the design, components and app relationship, but does not establish playtesting results or a comparative advantage over other dungeon crawlers.
Where can you buy it?
The publisher has a direct purchase page for the physical core game. Its stock status and price can change, so check the live publisher storefront for current availability rather than relying on an old listing. The Steam app is not a substitute purchase for the tabletop game.
