A decentralized storage network (DSN) coordinates independent providers to store and retrieve data, rather than relying on one storage company as the sole custodian. The network’s protocols manage operations such as placing data, finding it, and retrieving it. Decentralization describes how storage and coordination are organized; it does not, by itself, make files permanent, private, fast, or immune to failure.

What is a decentralized storage network?

A DSN combines storage capacity from multiple independent providers and coordinates how clients store and retrieve data. A formal model in the Filecoin paper describes three core operations: Put, Get, and Manage. In practical terms, a client submits data, later requests it, and uses network mechanisms to manage the storage arrangement.

The key distinction is that a DSN distributes storage and coordination among participants. It does not mean that every participant stores every file, that a file has unlimited copies, or that the network guarantees access forever.

How does decentralized storage work?

  1. Prepare and identify the data. A system may encrypt data, split it into blocks or shards, and create identifiers or metadata. IPFS uses content identifiers (CIDs) to identify content; Sia describes client-side encryption and erasure coding that divides data into redundant shards.
  2. Find a peer or provider. In IPFS, content-routing mechanisms, including a Kademlia distributed hash table, help locate peers advertising the requested CID.
  3. Transfer the data. IPFS uses peer-to-peer Bitswap to exchange blocks. An HTTP gateway can also let applications access IPFS content without implementing IPFS subsystems themselves.
  4. Keep the data available. A node must retain the data, or a persistence arrangement—such as a pinning service or storage deal—must keep it stored. The exact arrangement and its duration depend on the system.
  5. Verify or repair stored data. Some networks use cryptographic proofs or audits; some also repair data when pieces are lost. Filecoin, Storj, and Sia describe different mechanisms, so these should be evaluated as implementation-specific features, not assumed properties of every DSN.

Is IPFS a storage provider?

No. IPFS documentation describes IPFS as a suite of open protocols for content addressing, routing, and peer-to-peer data transfer. The name can refer to the protocols, an implementation, or a network of IPFS nodes; IPFS itself is not a storage provider or cloud service.

A CID identifies content, and because it is derived from the content, it can help verify that retrieved data matches the requested identifier. But an identifier is not a stored copy. Routing must find a peer with the data, and a node or service must continue retaining it. IPFS documentation puts the distinction plainly: “While IPFS guarantees that any content on the network is discoverable, it doesn’t guarantee that any content is persistently available.”

Does decentralized storage mean files are permanent?

No. Persistence depends on who retains the data and under what arrangement. A user may keep a node online, pay a pinning provider, or arrange storage through a network or contract. If no participant continues to store the content, a CID alone cannot make it available.

A pinning service can help keep content available, but someone must continue paying for storage, and a third-party service could stop operating. A Filecoin storage deal specifies data, duration, and cost, and providers periodically verify storage. Deal setup can be challenging for new users, and retrieval may be slower than from an IPFS pinning service. These approaches have different operational and retrieval tradeoffs; neither makes permanence automatic.

How do common decentralized storage approaches differ?

Approach What it does Persistence and retrieval considerations
IPFS A protocol suite and peer-to-peer content-addressing network. Content must be retained by nodes or a persistence service. Uploading content to IPFS alone does not ensure it stays online.
Filecoin A storage marketplace and network in which providers offer storage under deals. Deals define data, duration, and cost; providers periodically verify storage. Retrieval is not necessarily immediate.
Storj and Sia Storage systems whose vendor documentation describes distributed pieces or shards, redundancy, encryption, and auditing or repair mechanisms. Specific protections and operations vary by implementation. Vendor descriptions are not independent performance comparisons.

These categories are not interchangeable: a protocol for identifying and transferring content is different from a storage deal or a service that retains data for you.

What should you check before using a DSN?

  • Persistence: What keeps the data stored, who is responsible for retaining it, and for how long?
  • Redundancy and recovery: Is data replicated or erasure-coded? How many missing pieces can the system tolerate, and who repairs them?
  • Retrieval: What interface does your application use, and how quickly and predictably can you retrieve data?
  • Privacy and key control: Is encryption performed on your device or client, and who controls the keys?
  • Dependencies: Which parts are decentralized? Does access still depend on a hosted gateway, indexer, coordinator, or pinning company?
  • Cost and work: Account for storage, retrieval bandwidth, contract or payment fees, setup complexity, and any self-hosting work.

These questions help distinguish the actual design and responsibilities of a service. “Decentralized” alone does not establish that a system is more private, cheaper, faster, or more resistant to censorship than another storage option.

What does decentralized storage cost?

Sia documentation, accessed in 2026, gives an approximate network price of about $3 per terabyte per month, including 3x redundancy. This is a Sia-published estimate, not an independent market-wide price or a quote that applies to all providers; prices and terms can change. Storage costs also do not, by themselves, describe retrieval charges, setup work, or the persistence terms of another network.
