My favorite way to debloat and optimize a PC is to start with the built-in Windows tools and fix the slowdown you can actually identify. A slow startup, a nearly full drive, and an app using too much memory are different problems; a generic “debloat” script can remove something you need without addressing any of them.
First, work out what is slow
Notice when the slowdown happens: while Windows starts, when one particular app opens, during multitasking, when the drive is nearly full, or all the time. That clue helps you choose a targeted fix instead of making several changes at once and guessing which one helped.
Check resource use
Open Task Manager and look at the Processes view while the PC feels slow. Sort by CPU, Memory, or Disk to see whether a process is using an unusually large share of that resource. The Performance view gives an overview of current CPU, memory, and disk activity. High usage is a lead to investigate, not proof that a process is safe to stop: identify it before taking action.
Check startup and storage
If the delay is mostly at sign-in, review the Startup apps list in Task Manager. If Windows warns that storage is low, or updates will not install, check available space in Settings under System > Storage. Microsoft identifies low storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, malware, and hardware that no longer meets current needs among the possible causes of poor performance. More than one may apply.

Try low-risk fixes before removing anything
Windows includes controls for updates, startup apps, storage cleanup, and app removal. Use them before turning to registry edits, service changes, or scripts that make broad changes to the system.
- Install available updates. Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Updates can address software issues and are also important when troubleshooting update failures caused by low storage.
- Run a malware scan. Use your installed security software or Windows Security to scan the PC. If you suspect malware, address that before treating unfamiliar processes as ordinary apps to disable.
- Close what you are not using, then restart if needed. Unused apps and browser tabs consume resources. A restart can also clear a temporary slowdown; check whether the problem returns afterward.
- Disable only unnecessary startup apps. In Task Manager, open Startup apps, review the entries, and disable apps you recognize but do not need to launch when you sign in. If you are unsure what an entry does, leave it enabled until you can identify it.
- Uninstall apps you recognize and no longer use. Use Settings > Apps to review installed software. Do not remove an app just because its name is unfamiliar: you may rely on it, and some Windows components cannot be uninstalled through ordinary settings.
Free storage carefully when the drive is full
Low storage can be associated with slower performance and problems installing updates. Cleanup is most useful when it addresses that space shortage; deleting arbitrary files is not a guaranteed speed boost.

Use Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations
Open Settings > System > Storage. Depending on your Windows version and configuration, you may find Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, or both. Storage Sense can remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. Cleanup recommendations can surface categories such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps for review.

Inspect the selections before confirming cleanup. In particular, check personal files and anything connected to a recent Windows upgrade rather than assuming every suggested item is disposable. You can also review whether Storage Sense is configured to run automatically and what it will remove.

Use Disk Cleanup if it is available
On systems without Storage Sense, Disk Cleanup is another Windows option for reviewing files that may be removed. Review the categories and their consequences before confirming. If you need a particular file or are uncertain what a category contains, do not select it just to maximize the amount cleared.
Be cautious with aggressive “debloating”
Removing an app you understand and no longer need is different from disabling services or deleting registry entries based on a generic list. A service or system component may support a feature, device, or app you depend on, and broad changes can be difficult to reverse.

Microsoft warns that improper Registry Editor changes can cause system instability, application errors, or prevent Windows from starting. It advises backing up the registry before editing it. For most people trying to make a PC feel faster, supported Settings and Task Manager controls are a safer starting point. Avoid scripts that make sweeping changes unless you understand each change and have a reliable way to restore what it affects.

Compare a possible fix with the bottleneck it is meant to address. Prefer changes that are reversible and unlikely to remove a feature you use. - Slow sign-in: review Startup apps and disable only entries you recognize and do not need at sign-in.
- Low free space or failed updates: review Storage settings and remove only files or apps you are sure you do not need.
- One app or process using substantial resources: identify it in Task Manager before closing it, changing its startup behavior, or uninstalling it.
- Persistent slowness across different tasks: check for updates, malware, and repeated high CPU, memory, or disk use. If software checks do not explain the problem, consider whether the hardware is the limiting factor.
Windows power mode is another setting to consider only when it suits the situation. Microsoft says Best performance can use more power, drain a laptop battery faster, and make the device warmer. It is a trade-off, not a general cleanup step.
When software changes are not enough
Software tweaks have limits. Microsoft Support notes that older PCs with outdated hardware may see little improvement from these steps and says upgrading the device may be the best long-term solution in those cases. That does not mean every slow PC needs new hardware: first identify a likely hardware bottleneck and check the device’s compatibility before choosing an upgrade. For example, an SSD is relevant only if the PC’s existing drive and hardware make that upgrade suitable; a 2020 Outbyte guide describes replacing an HDD with an SSD, but does not establish a performance gain for every computer.
For Windows 10 users, Microsoft ended support on 2025-10-14. Performance troubleshooting does not change that support status, so consider the operating system’s support situation as well as the immediate slowdown.
So, what is my favorite?
Use Task Manager and Storage settings to identify the issue, then make the smallest supported change that addresses it: review startup apps for slow sign-ins, carefully free space when the drive is full, or investigate a resource-heavy process when a particular workload is slow. This approach is less dramatic than a one-click debloat, but it is easier to understand and undo—and more likely to target the actual cause.
