Play Death Stranding first, ideally the Death Stranding Director’s Cut PS5, and then play DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH. The sequel is officially presented as a standalone game, so you can begin there, but it follows Sam eleven months after the original and builds on relationships, terminology and emotional stakes established in the first story. Starting with the original gives a story-focused newcomer the most coherent introduction. Starting with the sequel is reasonable if faster pacing, earlier equipment and a newer ruleset matter more to you than complete context.

This guide separates the two legitimate choices, explains what “standalone sequel” means in practice, and gives a purchase path for PlayStation and PC players without pretending there is one universal answer.

The direct answer: play in release order unless you have a specific reason not to

For most first-time players, the best order is Death Stranding followed by Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The first game introduces Sam, the fractured society he is trying to reconnect, and the series’ vocabulary at the point where a new player needs it. The sequel can explain enough to let a newcomer continue, but explanations are not the same as experiencing the original relationships and reveals in their intended sequence.

Choose the sequel first only when your priority is a quicker onboarding experience, newer equipment or a faster-moving campaign. PlayStation’s hands-on coverage says Death Stranding 2 gives players equipment and structures earlier and has a faster story rhythm. That makes it a more immediately accessible systems-first entry, but it also means accepting that some returning characters and references will carry less weight.

There is no authoritative completion-time comparison or survey proving a universally correct order. The useful rule is therefore preference-based: story first means 1 then 2; systems and pace first can mean 2 then 1.

How the two games are connected

It is a standalone sequel, not an unrelated spin-off

Kojima Productions describes Death Stranding 2: On the Beach as a standalone sequel. “Standalone” means the game is designed to be playable without having finished the first title; it does not mean the stories are separate. Steam describes the sequel’s story as taking place eleven months after the original, and both games follow Sam.

That combination matters. A new player can learn the immediate objective and controls in the sequel, but the game is continuing a life, a set of relationships and a world that already changed in the first chapter. You will understand the sequel’s plot events at a basic level without necessarily feeling why a returning person, place or decision is important.

Sam is the continuity anchor

Because Sam remains the central character, the first game functions as his introduction rather than merely an optional prologue. His personal history, the people connected to him and his response to a fractured America give later scenes their context. Starting with the sequel asks the game to serve two audiences at once: returning players who already know Sam and newcomers who need orientation. It succeeds as an entry point, but the emotional emphasis is different from seeing the arc in order.

What the first game establishes

Death Stranding launched on PS4 on November 8, 2019. Its central premise is reconnecting isolated communities in a fractured America. Hideo Kojima described it in the official 2019 launch announcement as “a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society.” That premise is both the story’s setting and the lens through which its systems make sense.

The original teaches you why connection is valuable before asking you to judge what it costs. Communities are not presented as a generic map to clear; they are part of a society that has been separated and must be linked again. The terminology, institutions and personal stakes introduced along the way are the background the sequel assumes you will recognize.

Playing the original first also lets you experience its escalation without comparison to the sequel’s later conveniences. You learn the shape of the world, then see how a follow-up can expand that foundation. For a player interested in Kojima’s storytelling rather than only the newest hardware, that progression is a major part of the appeal.

How the sequel changes the experience

Faster onboarding and earlier tools

PlayStation’s hands-on report says Death Stranding 2 moves faster and gives players equipment and structures earlier. That change addresses a common barrier to the first game: its deliberate introduction asks you to absorb its world and methods before it fully opens up. The sequel reaches its practical possibilities sooner, so a player who wants meaningful tools and construction options early may find it easier to settle into.

Faster does not mean shallow. It changes the order in which the game asks questions. The sequel can present a problem and give you more ways to approach it earlier, while the original spends more time making the basic premise and vocabulary familiar. If you disliked slow starts in other narrative games, the sequel’s pacing is the safer first impression.

A broader journey

The first game focuses on reconnecting a fractured America. The sequel expands the journey to Mexico and Australia. That larger geography is not simply a longer checklist; it signals a wider scope for the world and for Sam’s responsibilities. Seeing the original’s American framework first makes the expansion easier to read as development rather than as a completely new setting.

More tools, weapons and vehicles

Kojima Productions says the sequel adds tools, weapons and vehicles. These additions make the second game the more feature-rich starting point from a systems perspective. They can also change your expectations if you play the sequel first: returning to the original afterward may feel more constrained because you are moving from the newer design back to the earlier one.

That is not an argument that the original is obsolete. Its narrower toolkit is part of its pacing and learning curve. The important trade-off is direction: release order moves from a more deliberate foundation to a broader sequel, while reverse order moves from convenience and variety to a slower, more foundational game.

Side-by-side comparison

Core world Reconnects isolated communities across a fractured America. Expands the journey to Mexico and Australia.
Onboarding More deliberate introduction to its world and systems. Faster rhythm, with equipment and structures available earlier.
Systems emphasis Establishes the series’ foundational delivery, connection and traversal framework. Adds tools, weapons and vehicles to the established framework.
Best reason to start here You want the fullest narrative context and intended character progression. You prioritize newer systems, earlier capability and faster pacing.
Risk of starting here The slower opening may test your patience. Returning relationships and references may have less emotional impact.

What you gain by playing Death Stranding first

Character relationships arrive before their consequences

The sequel’s returning relationships are easier to appreciate when you have already spent time with the people involved. You do not merely know names; you understand what those connections mean to Sam and how the first game built them. That context can turn a scene from an exposition exchange into a continuation of an emotional argument.

The setting’s terminology has a reason to exist

Death Stranding introduces a world with its own terms and institutions. Starting there lets each term arrive alongside the problem it describes. Starting with the sequel means learning some vocabulary while the story is already moving, which is manageable but less natural for a newcomer.

The sequel’s expansion becomes legible

Mexico and Australia have more meaning when you have first seen the original’s approach to a fractured America. You can recognize what the sequel is preserving, what it is enlarging and what its new tools are intended to change. Without that baseline, the larger map and additional equipment are still enjoyable, but their design purpose is harder to judge.

What you gain by starting with Death Stranding 2

A quicker route to the series’ newer design

The sequel provides equipment and structures earlier and moves at a faster pace, according to PlayStation’s hands-on report. If your main question is whether the modernized systems feel better to you, beginning with the sequel answers it immediately rather than asking you to complete the original first.

A standalone introduction with less commitment up front

Because the sequel is officially standalone, you can begin without treating the first game as mandatory homework. This is useful if you are unsure whether the series’ tone or unusual premise will hold your attention. You can sample the newer entry, then decide whether the original’s slower foundation is worth returning to.

A deliberate reverse-order experiment

Some players enjoy seeing a series’ current form before exploring its origins. In that case, the sequel-first route can work if you accept that the original will explain where the framework came from after you have already seen its expanded version. It is a valid preference, just not the order that maximizes narrative context.

Which edition of the first game should a newcomer buy?

Death Stranding Director’s Cut PS5

For a new PlayStation player, the current first-game recommendation is Death Stranding Director’s Cut PS5. It is the expanded edition of the original and launched on PS5 on September 24, 2021. Choosing it gives you the first story in the edition positioned for current PS5 hardware rather than requiring you to begin with the 2019 PS4 release.

The Director’s Cut does not change the order decision: it is still the first game, and Death Stranding 2 is still the follow-up. Its value here is practical. You receive the original campaign in its expanded PS5 edition, then move to the sequel with the foundational story already understood.

The original PS4 release

The PS4 version remains the historical starting point because it is the edition that launched on November 8, 2019. It is appropriate if that is the version you already own or the platform you use. New buyers on PS5 should generally favor the Director’s Cut rather than seeking out the older edition solely for release-order purity.

Which version of the sequel should an experienced player buy?

If you have already completed the original, the natural next purchase is Death Stranding 2: On the Beach PS5. The sequel is built around Sam’s continuing story, so returning players are the audience best positioned to benefit from its expanded world and faster toolkit without losing narrative context.

For PC players, PlayStation announced a PC version of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach for March 19, 2026. Check the storefront and regional availability for the platform you intend to use, because release timing and editions can differ by market. The announced date is a platform-release fact, not a guarantee that every physical or digital listing has identical contents.

Choose your order with this decision framework

Your priority Recommended order Why
You care most about Sam’s complete story and returning relationships. Death Stranding, then Death Stranding 2. You encounter the character and world before their sequel consequences.
You want the fastest onboarding and newer equipment. Death Stranding 2 first. The sequel supplies equipment and structures earlier and has a faster rhythm.
You own the first game but have never finished it. Finish or restart the first game, then continue to 2. Stopping partway leaves the story context incomplete even if you remember the basic premise.
You have finished the first game. Buy Death Stranding 2. The sequel is the direct continuation and expands the journey beyond America.
You are testing whether the series suits you. Start with 2 if its pace is the deciding factor; otherwise start with 1. The standalone design lowers the barrier, while release order gives the stronger narrative sample.

Recommended play plans

Plan A: the story-first route

  1. Play Death Stranding Director’s Cut on PS5, or the original PS4 release if that is the version available to you.
  2. Complete the first game’s main story before judging the sequel’s returning relationships.
  3. Move to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach on PS5 or its announced PC release.
  4. Expect the sequel to feel faster and more generously equipped; that contrast is part of the progression from one game to the next.

Plan B: the systems-first route

  1. Start with Death Stranding 2: On the Beach if earlier equipment, structures and a quicker rhythm are your deciding factors.
  2. Accept that some character history and terminology will be introduced in continuation rather than at their original point.
  3. If the world interests you, play Death Stranding afterward as the foundation behind the sequel.
  4. Do not expect the reverse order to recreate the first game’s original reveals; it will explain the setting after you have already seen its expanded form.

Plan C: the returning-player route

  1. If you completed the original, do not replay it solely because the sequel is labeled standalone.
  2. Use a replay only when you want to refresh Sam’s relationships, the fractured-American setting or the first game’s terminology.
  3. Otherwise, go directly to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and let its faster onboarding carry you into the continuation.

Common mistakes when deciding

Treating “standalone” as “unconnected”

A standalone sequel is not a separate continuity. It describes accessibility, not the absence of history. If you interpret the label as proof that the first game has no value, you may be surprised by how much more resonance returning characters have for an experienced player.

  • Your actions can affect how other players interact with the game's world, and vice-versa. Make sure you leave your mark

Assuming the newer game must be the better first game

Newer tools and faster pacing solve one kind of problem: getting players into the action sooner. They do not replace the first game’s role as the introduction to Sam and the world. Choose based on whether you want improved onboarding or maximum narrative context, not simply on the sequel’s release date.

Buying by review percentage alone

Steam’s snapshot accessed October 18, 2026 shows 94% positive English user reviews for Death Stranding 2. Review percentages and counts change over time, and that figure does not measure whether you personally need the first game’s context. It is a useful signal that many Steam users responded positively, not a reason to reverse the order that fits your priorities.

Expecting a universal completion-time answer

No authoritative head-to-head completion-time statistic establishes that one order is faster for everyone. Your pace depends on how much optional exploration, world-building and experimentation you choose. A faster sequel opening does not automatically make an entire playthrough shorter.

Is Death Stranding 2 a direct sequel?

Yes, in the practical sense that matters to a player: it follows Sam eleven months after the first game and continues the same world. It is also officially described as a standalone sequel, so you can start there without finishing the original. Those statements are complementary, not contradictory. The game is accessible on its own while still rewarding knowledge of what came before.

Do you need to play Death Stranding before Death Stranding 2?

No. You can start with Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. You should play the first game beforehand if you want the strongest understanding of Sam’s history, the setting’s terminology and the emotional importance of returning relationships. The requirement is therefore not technical; it is a question of how much context you want before the sequel begins.

What should a first-time buyer do today?

On PS5, buy Death Stranding Director’s Cut PS5 first if you are new to the series and are willing to follow the story in order. After finishing it, buy Death Stranding 2: On the Beach PS5. On PC, use the available edition of the first game as your starting point, then check the sequel’s regional listing around its announced March 19, 2026 PC release.

If you know that slow introductions frustrate you and you primarily want the sequel’s newer equipment and faster structure, start with Death Stranding 2 instead. You will not be locked out of the story, but you will be choosing convenience and momentum over the richest possible setup.
