The safest way to play Death Stranding is to plan around terrain and cargo condition, not the shortest line on the map. Read every order, tilt the map to see slopes, mark several waypoints, keep the cargo indicator white, and carry one or two tools that match the obstacles ahead. Scan ground and water with the Odradek, slow down when Sam is tired, and use ladders, anchors, generators, roads, and shared structures to turn difficult crossings into repeatable routes.
This guide explains the complete beginner loop: choosing a route, balancing and protecting a load, handling BT and MULE territory, deciding when to walk or drive, and investing materials in structures that save time on later deliveries.
Start with the order, not the map
Every delivery gives you the information needed to make a safe plan. Before selecting Accept Order, read the destination, cargo type, delivery conditions, and any time requirement. A fragile or unusually shaped package can justify a slower route, while a timed order may reward a vehicle and a prepared road. Check the cargo count and total weight so you know whether you are planning a walk, a vehicle trip, or a journey that needs a postbox or share locker halfway through.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe order screen also tells you what success means. In general, cargo condition matters more than arriving by the shortest possible path. Kojima Productions states it plainly: “The most important thing is to deliver your package without damaging it.” Treat speed as a tool, not the objective.

How to plan a route step by step
- Study the destination and conditions. Note whether the order is timed, whether the cargo is unusually tall or fragile, and how much capacity it consumes.
- Tilt the map. A top-down view can hide a cliff. Tilt the map to read steepness, then look for a longer contour with gentler gradients rather than climbing every mountain directly.
- Build a chain of waypoints. Place multiple route markers through valleys, around large rocks, and on the approach to the facility. Several short decisions are easier to follow than one line drawn across impassable terrain.
- Mark rest and resupply stops. Distribution centers and other known facilities provide places to rest, recover, fabricate, and reorganize on long routes.
- Inspect the connected world. In Chiral Network coverage, other porters’ ladders, bridges, roads, paths, postboxes, vehicles, and generators may already be available. Use them as assistance, not as guarantees; a structure can be out of battery range, blocked by terrain, or inconvenient for your particular load.
- Match equipment to the route. Take a ladder for a short vertical section, a climbing anchor for a rocky drop or steep face, and Container Repair Spray when Timefall is possible. Add a power skeleton, floating carrier, or vehicle only when its capacity and terrain limits fit the plan.
- Recheck as you travel. Scan slopes and water again after each major landmark. The best route on the map can become unsafe when stamina is low or a river is deeper than it looked.
| Route choice | When it is preferable | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Short, steep line | Only when Sam has stamina, suitable climbing gear, and a stable load | More balance corrections, falls, and container damage risk |
| Long, gentle contour | Heavy, tall, or fragile cargo; low stamina; unknown terrain | More walking time and potentially more exposure to hazards |
| Vehicle route | Large loads on connected roads or relatively open ground | Battery use, difficult river crossings, and poor handling on rough ground |
| Prepared network route | Repeated deliveries between facilities after roads or ziplines are linked | Material and chiral-bandwidth investment, plus dependence on network placement |
Balance the load before leaving
The cargo indicator is your quickest warning that a plan is too ambitious. Keep it white whenever possible. Yellow means the load is straining Sam and movement is impaired. Red means the load exceeds Sam’s maximum and severely harms mobility. A red load is not merely slower: it makes unstable ground, combat escapes, and water crossings much harder.
| Indicator | Meaning | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| White | Manageable load | Proceed, while still keeping fragile or tall items stable |
| Yellow | Strain and reduced movement | Remove optional cargo, use a carrier or vehicle, or plan a gentler route |
| Red | Over Sam’s maximum capacity | Repack immediately; stash or deliver excess cargo before setting out |
Use Auto-Arrange Cargo to place items in a more efficient position around Sam’s body. Then inspect the result instead of accepting it blindly. Keep heavy pieces close to Sam’s center of gravity and avoid a tall stack that can catch on terrain, expose you to MULE detection, or make a sharp turn into a tumble. Some special packages have orientation requirements; pizza deliveries are a familiar example. If an order tells you to keep a package horizontal or otherwise positioned, preserve that orientation even when Auto-Arrange suggests another arrangement.
Before departure, rotate the camera around the load and check that no item is protruding unnecessarily. If the order is too large, use a floating carrier, power skeleton, vehicle, postbox, or share locker rather than accepting a red indicator and hoping the route is forgiving.
Pack tools for the obstacles you can see
- Ladders: bridge a short cliff, awkward ledge, or steep bank. Place them where both ends are reachable and where the next step does not immediately put you in deep water.
- Climbing anchors: provide a controlled line across a rocky drop or steep face. They are safer than attempting to scramble down an unstable route with a tall load.
- Container Repair Spray: take it whenever Timefall or a BT zone is likely. It restores container condition after exposure or accidents.
- Floating carriers: add carrying capacity and let you move bulky cargo without stacking everything on Sam’s back.
- Power skeletons: increase carrying capability and make complex terrain less punishing, though they do not eliminate the need to watch stamina and balance.
- PCC: lets you fabricate structures such as generators, postboxes, and other facilities when you have the required materials and chiral bandwidth.
Do not fill every equipment slot with a tool “just in case.” A balanced load and one tool that solves the route’s defining obstacle are usually safer than a collection that pushes cargo into yellow or red.
Protect containers from Timefall and falls
Timefall ages objects it touches. It degrades the container first rather than instantly destroying the contents, but severe container damage can eventually affect what is inside. Falls, collisions, and rough handling can also damage the container. Because delivery ratings are primarily affected by cargo condition, a fast trip that arrives with battered packages can perform worse than a slower, careful walk.

- Use Repair Spray when condition has fallen, then reorganize the load before continuing.
- If condition is deteriorating rapidly, change the route or pause at a facility instead of gambling on the final distance.
Damage is easier to prevent than to recover from. A ladder placed before a climb, a gentle detour around loose rock, or a short rest to recover stamina can protect a delivery more effectively than trying to make up time later.
Read the ground, water, and Sam’s stamina
Use the Odradek continuously rather than only when a route looks dangerous. It helps identify safe ground and warns about deep water. Rescan after turning, because a safe-looking bank can lead directly into a deeper channel a few steps later.
Recommended Free Tools
Stamina depletion weakens balance. Drink from the canteen, rest when needed, and avoid beginning a difficult climb with the stamina meter already low. On steep slopes and in waist-deep water, hold L2 and R2 to steady Sam and regain control. This is particularly important when carrying a tall stack or crossing while the current is pushing against you.
Walking is often the correct answer. A Reverse Trike can cover open ground quickly, but forcing it through rocks, tight ravines, or deep water can drain its battery or throw Sam and the cargo. If the Odradek marks water deep red, treat it as a serious warning: the bike can sink, and Sam and the cargo can be washed away. Dismount, find a shallower crossing, or leave the vehicle and continue on foot.
Structures that make deliveries safer
| Structure or item | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Ladder | Short vertical or awkward sections | Requires a suitable placement and does not replace a route around an entire cliff |
| Climbing anchor | Controlled movement across rocky drops and steep faces | Useful only where an anchor line can reach the needed terrain |
| Bridge | Repeatable crossings over rivers, gaps, or hazardous ground | Needs materials and available chiral bandwidth |
| Road | Fast, stable vehicle travel between connected facilities | Requires substantial construction investment and a connected network |
| Generator | Recharging a Reverse Trike and other battery-powered equipment | Place it within the equipment’s charging radius |
| Zipline | Linking mountain facilities and avoiding rough ground | Needs a chain of compatible points and network resources |
| Postbox or share locker | Stashing cargo until you have more capacity or a vehicle | You must retrieve the items later; it is not a permanent delivery |
Bridges and roads become valuable when you will make the same crossing repeatedly. Build the first section where it removes a genuine hazard, then extend the route only when the next segment connects useful destinations. Generators should sit where a vehicle naturally slows or where a difficult approach would otherwise leave you stranded.

Ziplines are especially effective once mountain deliveries become routine. Community guidance from 505 Games notes that a well-linked zipline network is easier to use than trucks in rough mountains. Plan lines between facilities and high-traffic destinations rather than scattering isolated towers that cannot connect.

Structures in Chiral Network coverage can be built by other players. Like useful ladders, bridges, roads, generators, postboxes, and paths, and contribute materials when you can. Your own structures can assist other porters, while likes provide feedback about which placements are genuinely helping.
Using the Reverse Trike safely
The Reverse Trike found near the Distribution Center west of Capital Knot City introduces faster travel, but it is not an all-terrain solution. To charge it, fabricate a PCC, select Generator, and build the generator within charging range of the bike. Watch the battery after river crossings and other demanding sections.
- Load only what the bike can carry without making the route unstable.
- Follow prepared roads or open ground whenever possible.
- Slow before rocks, sharp turns, and water; do not treat speed as protection.
- Use the Odradek’s water warning. Deep-red markers indicate water that may sink the bike and wash away Sam and cargo.
- If terrain becomes rough, park safely, secure the cargo, and walk with a ladder or anchor rather than forcing the vehicle onward.
- Recharge at a generator before the battery becomes critical, especially before a remote section with no facility nearby.
A vehicle is most useful when it reduces repeated carrying over a route you already understand. On an unfamiliar path, the extra battery and handling risks can outweigh its speed advantage.
Surviving BT territory
Early BT encounters reward patience and information gathering rather than rushing. When the Odradek warns you, stop and read its direction and movement. Hold your breath and move slowly, using the scanner to identify a safer line. Sudden sprints, noisy collisions, and depleted stamina make an escape harder.

- Your actions can affect how other players interact with the game's world, and vice-versa. Make sure you leave your mark
- Pause outside the densest area and let the Odradek indicate the threat’s direction.
- Hold your breath while moving through the immediate danger zone.
- Take short, controlled steps and avoid unnecessary contact with water or unstable slopes.
- Once clear, leave the Timefall area before reorganizing the load.
- Inspect container condition and use Repair Spray if needed.
Later equipment gives you an option to fight. Hematic grenades can damage BTs, but they consume Sam’s blood. Carry Blood Bags when you expect repeated encounters so combat does not leave you unable to recover. Avoid treating grenades as a substitute for route planning: bypassing a dense area can preserve both blood and cargo condition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Breaking through MULE territory
MULE sensor poles reveal cargo locations and can turn a direct approach into a chase. Watchtowers help locate camps before you commit to a route. If a scan catches you, leave the detection area quickly, break line of sight, or hide in tall grass. A Bola Gun can bind an immediate threat, creating space to escape rather than forcing a prolonged fight.
When you raid a camp for materials, leave delivery cargo behind first. PlayStation advises doing this so recovered supplies do not push your load beyond capacity or expose mission packages to avoidable damage. Stash the delivery in a postbox or share locker, collect the supplies you actually need, and retrieve the order afterward with a vehicle or a lighter load.
Plan the exit before entering a camp. A successful pickup that leaves you overburdened in open ground is not a successful delivery plan. Mark a retreat route, identify nearby cover, and keep enough stamina for the return journey.

- Repeat the route on foot first. Learn where slopes, rivers, BT zones, and MULE scans actually occur.
- Place the smallest useful aid. A ladder or anchor at the one dangerous crossing often provides more value than a structure in a safe area.
- Connect repeat destinations. Invest materials and chiral bandwidth in bridges, roads, or ziplines only when they shorten multiple future deliveries.
- Add power where vehicles fail. A generator near a difficult approach can be more useful than one beside an already powered facility.
- Contribute to shared construction. Other porters’ progress can reduce your material burden, and your contributions improve the route for everyone using that network.
- Reassess after unlocking new equipment. A power skeleton, floating carrier, vehicle, or zipline can change which crossings deserve permanent construction.
The shared world is an advantage, not an autopilot. Check that a bridge reaches the bank you need, that a generator is within charging radius, and that a zipline chain has no missing link. Terrain, battery state, and cargo condition still determine whether a structure is safe on this particular trip.
Which version should a beginner buy?
Kojima Productions describes DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT as the definitive experience and lists it as available on PS5. It adds missions, facilities, weapons, vehicles, and other enhancements. If you are starting on that console, look specifically for the listing titled “Death Stranding Director’s Cut PS5.” Confirm the exact edition, seller, stock, price, and any purchase terms before buying, because those details can change by region and date.
The edition choice does not change the fundamentals in this guide: route planning, balanced cargo, container care, scanning, and deliberate use of structures remain the skills that determine safe deliveries.
Quick Recap
Beginner checklist before every delivery

Common problems and precise fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Sam keeps stumbling | Yellow or red load, low stamina, or steep terrain | Repack, stash optional cargo, drink from the canteen, rest, and choose a gentler line |
| Cargo condition drops suddenly | Timefall exposure, a fall, or vehicle impact | Leave the hazard, inspect containers, apply Repair Spray, and slow down |
| The trike will not make the crossing | Deep water or rough ground | Check Odradek markers, find a shallower route, or abandon the vehicle temporarily and walk |
| You are detected by MULEs | Sensor scan or a tall, exposed load | Break line of sight, hide in tall grass, retreat, or bind an immediate threat with the Bola Gun |
| A generator does not recharge the bike | The vehicle is outside its charging radius | Move the generator or vehicle until the charging range overlaps |
| A shared structure seems useless | It is disconnected, misplaced, out of range, or blocked by terrain | Verify the approach and build a complementary ladder, road segment, generator, or zipline |
| You cannot carry recovered supplies | Delivery cargo consumed available capacity | Stash the delivery in a postbox or share locker before collecting supplies |
