Deadlock and Dota 2 share Valve’s competitive, team-based DNA, but they are not the same game in a different camera angle. Deadlock is an unfinished, invite-limited experiment that combines third-person shooting with MOBA ideas. Dota 2 is the released, free-to-play strategy MOBA launched on 9 July 2013, with more than 100 heroes, flexible roles, and a mature item system. Choose Deadlock if you want to explore a developing shooter-MOBA format and can obtain an invitation; choose Dota 2 if you want immediate access to a documented, established competitive game.
Deadlock and Dota 2 at a glance
The most important differences are perspective, availability, and how settled each game’s systems are. Valve’s current Steam listings describe Deadlock as “a multiplayer game in early development,” while Dota 2 is a released game marked free to play.

Deadlock is Valve’s developing multiplayer game built around a combination of MOBA and shooter concepts. Its official tags identify it as a third-person shooter and hero shooter as well as a MOBA, team-based, competitive, and player-versus-player title.

That combination changes what you do moment to moment. Instead of directing a character primarily through an overhead strategic view, you inhabit a hero from behind and interact with the battlefield through direct movement, aiming, and shooting. The MOBA label signals that Valve is experimenting with the broader genre framework of team objectives, hero abilities, and coordinated competition, but the Steam page does not promise a final ruleset comparable to Dota 2’s established structure.
Why Deadlock’s status matters
Valve warns that the build contains temporary art and experimental gameplay. In practical terms, names, abilities, balance, maps, progression, interface elements, and even the way matches are organized may change. A tactic that works during a test period is not evidence of a permanent feature, and a missing feature is not proof that Valve will never add it.
Access is also unusual. Deadlock is not generally available through the Steam store; Valve currently limits access to friend invitations sent by playtesters. There is no announced public release date. If you do not receive an invitation, installing Steam alone does not give you a legitimate way to enter the game.
What Dota 2 is
Dota 2 is Valve’s established free-to-play MOBA, released on 9 July 2013. Its store description says that millions of players enter battle as one of more than a hundred Dota heroes and that every hero is free.
The game is built around strategic control rather than a shooter viewpoint. You select a hero, use abilities, acquire and combine items, and coordinate with teammates while filling one of several possible roles. The large hero roster and item ecosystem create many possible team compositions and play patterns, which is why Dota 2 can support long-term competitive study rather than only short-term mechanical practice.
Valve also labels Dota 2 “Difficult.” That is an official genre signal, not a promise that every player will find it harder than Deadlock. It reflects the amount of interaction among heroes, abilities, items, roles, and team decisions that a new player must learn.
Camera and moment-to-moment control
Deadlock: direct third-person action
Deadlock’s third-person-shooter and hero-shooter tags indicate that your immediate attention is on positioning a character in space, directing the camera, and aiming attacks. Mechanical execution therefore includes the skills associated with direct action games: keeping a target in view, controlling movement while under pressure, and making rapid decisions through a character-level perspective.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The official description does not establish a finalized list of movement techniques or weapon behavior, so it would be inaccurate to present any particular traversal system, recoil model, or mobility trick as permanent. The reliable distinction is the perspective and input emphasis: you play through a third-person action view while participating in a team-based competitive game.
Dota 2: overhead strategic control
Dota 2 presents the battlefield from an overhead strategy perspective. Your attention is divided among hero positioning, ability timing, item choices, allied and enemy locations, and the wider state of the match. Success depends on making good decisions across a larger strategic picture rather than aiming a weapon through a character-level camera.

That does not make Dota 2 mechanically passive. It demands precise control of a hero and rapid responses, but the central challenge is coordinating information, resources, roles, and abilities inside a strategy game.
Is Deadlock just Dota 2 in third person?
No. The games overlap in their team-based MOBA foundation, but the viewpoint changes the skill profile and the way information reaches you. Deadlock uses a developing third-person shooter format; Dota 2 uses a mature overhead strategy format with a documented hero-and-item ecosystem. Treat Deadlock as an experiment in combining genres, not as a camera conversion of Dota 2.

Match structure and strategic depth
Dota 2 has a documented framework
Dota 2’s official description explicitly centers on choosing from more than 100 heroes, combining abilities and items, and filling multiple roles. That gives players a known framework for learning: study a hero, understand its abilities, learn which items support a situation, and practice the responsibilities of a selected role.
The framework is broad rather than simple. A hero’s value can change with team composition, item timing, enemy abilities, and the stage of a match. The published information supports describing Dota 2 as a flexible, strategy-heavy MOBA; it does not support reducing every match to one fixed role or one prescribed build.
Deadlock’s framework is still being defined
Deadlock’s current tags establish the intended blend of hero shooter, third-person shooter, and MOBA elements, but Valve has not published a finalized equivalent of Dota 2’s complete hero, role, and item structure. You can therefore discuss its direction, not a guaranteed final format.
For a prospective player, this means two things. First, the game may reward both direct shooting skill and team-level planning. Second, learning materials, balance assumptions, and strategic conventions can become outdated as development continues. The uncertainty is part of the early-development experience, not a minor footnote.
Which game is harder?
There is no responsible single ranking while Deadlock remains unfinished. Dota 2 is officially tagged “Difficult,” and its more-than-100-hero roster, flexible roles, abilities, and items create a substantial knowledge burden. New players must learn not only their own hero but also how many other heroes and items affect a match.
Deadlock may feel more natural to someone who already plays third-person shooters because aiming and direct movement are familiar forms of input. That does not establish that it is easier overall. A developing game can have unfamiliar rules, incomplete documentation, changing balance, and unstable conventions. Until Valve finalizes and documents its systems, comparisons such as “Deadlock is easier” or “Deadlock is harder” go beyond the available evidence.
Use your existing skills as the better predictor
- Choose Dota 2 if you enjoy studying systems, planning around abilities and items, and learning a large strategic vocabulary.
- Choose Deadlock if direct camera control, aiming, and action-game movement are the part of competitive play you most want to practice.
- If you are new to both genres, expect Dota 2 to require more up-front rules knowledge, while Deadlock’s unfinished design may create uncertainty instead of a clearly lower learning curve.
Availability, cost, and stability
Dota 2 is available now
Dota 2 is released and free to play. You can access the complete public game without waiting for an invitation or a future launch announcement. Its long-established status also means that its hero and item concepts are documented enough for players to build a stable learning plan.

Deadlock is invitation-limited
Deadlock is not yet generally available on Steam. Valve lists the release date as “To be announced” and says access is limited to friend invites via playtesters. Any website or person offering a supposed public purchase or guaranteed access is not supported by the official availability information.
Even with access, expect an experimental build. Temporary art and changing gameplay are explicit parts of the current version, so technical behavior and competitive balance should be treated as provisional.
Neither game should be judged by a shared player-count claim
No directly comparable, current player-count or esports-audience figure is established for both games here. It would be misleading to combine estimates from different dates or third-party methodologies. The defensible distinction is simpler: Dota 2 is the released competitive game, while Deadlock is a private, developing test experience.
PC requirements and hardware certainty
The contrast is especially important if you are deciding what to install or whether to upgrade a computer.
| Requirement question | Deadlock | Dota 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Operating systems | Currently not specified | Valve publishes requirements for Windows, macOS, and Linux |
| Processor requirement | Currently not specified | Valve publishes a minimum specification on its Steam page |
| Minimum memory | Not stated in the current listing | 4 GB RAM minimum, according to Valve’s current Steam listing |
| Minimum storage | Not stated in the current listing | 60 GB minimum, according to Valve’s current Steam listing |
| Performance certainty | Low: the game is unfinished and requirements are not finalized | Higher: published requirements exist for the released game, although actual performance still depends on your hardware and settings |
Do not use Dota 2’s published numbers to predict Deadlock performance. The games use different perspectives and technical designs, and Deadlock’s operating-system and processor fields are still not specified. Likewise, the listed 4 GB memory and 60 GB storage figures are minimum requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or visual setting.

A hero shooter normally emphasizes direct control of a distinct character, weapon aiming, and action-game positioning. A MOBA emphasizes team objectives, hero abilities, strategic roles, and decisions made across a shared battlefield. The labels can overlap: Valve places both “Hero Shooter” and “MOBA” on Deadlock’s page, while Dota 2 is tagged “MOBA” and “Strategy.”
Those labels describe emphasis rather than a complete rulebook. They do not prove that Deadlock will copy Dota 2’s lanes, items, match length, or role names, and they do not mean Dota 2 lacks moment-to-moment mechanics. Use them as a first orientation: Deadlock points toward direct third-person action, while Dota 2 points toward overhead strategic control.
How to choose without overpromising yourself
Start with access. If you need a game you can download and play today, Dota 2 is the only dependable choice of these two. If you have a legitimate playtester invitation and are willing to accept unfinished content, Deadlock offers the chance to experience Valve’s experiment while it is still changing.
Next, identify the kind of practice you enjoy. Dota 2 rewards learning interactions among a large hero roster, abilities, items, and roles. Deadlock is aimed at players who want those team and hero concepts delivered through a third-person shooter interface. Neither preference is universally better; they are different forms of competitive attention.

Finally, separate curiosity from commitment. Trying an early build can be valuable even when a system changes later, but do not buy hardware, guides, or account access based on assumptions about Deadlock’s final requirements. Valve has not announced a public release date or finalized its specifications.
What the choice feels like in practice
Pick Deadlock when experimentation is the point
- You specifically want a third-person shooter and MOBA combination.
- You are comfortable with temporary art, experimental gameplay, and rules that may change.
- You can obtain access through a legitimate invitation from a playtester.
- You want to provide feedback or learn a developing format rather than enter a settled competitive ecosystem.
Pick Dota 2 when you want a complete game now
- You want immediate public access to a free-to-play title.
- You prefer overhead strategic control to direct third-person aiming.
- You want a large, established hero roster and an item system that supports many roles and team plans.
- You are willing to study a game officially labeled difficult and invest in a long-term competitive skill set.
Try both only when your expectations are separate
If you eventually play both, do not expect knowledge to transfer one-to-one. Team coordination and ability awareness are useful in either game, but aiming from a third-person view is not the same task as managing an overhead battlefield, and Dota 2’s mature item-and-role conventions cannot be assumed to exist unchanged in Deadlock.
How to evaluate Deadlock as it develops
Because Deadlock is unfinished, use a version-aware checklist whenever you read a guide or watch a tutorial:
- Check whether the information refers to the current build rather than an older test period.
- Separate Valve’s published facts—early-development status, invitation-only access, temporary art, experimental gameplay, and no announced release date—from a creator’s interpretation of balance or strategy.
- Confirm that a hero, ability, item, map feature, or system still exists before treating it as part of the game’s permanent design.
- Do not infer final hardware requirements from a test build or from Dota 2’s specifications.
- Expect terminology and competitive conventions to settle only after Valve publishes a more final version.
This approach prevents a common mistake: treating a snapshot of an experiment as a promise about the finished product.

Practical questions new players should ask
Do I need to pay for Deadlock?
Valve’s listing does not present Deadlock as a generally purchasable Steam release. The immediate barrier is access, not a published price: invitations currently come through playtesters, and the game has no announced public launch. Be cautious of anyone selling guaranteed entry, because that offer is not part of Valve’s stated access path.
Does free-to-play mean every Dota 2 hero is locked?
No. Valve’s store copy explicitly says, “All heroes are free.” That is a major difference from games that charge separately for a character roster. Dota 2’s cost-free entry gives you access to its central hero ecosystem, although learning that ecosystem still requires time.
Can Dota 2 skills transfer to Deadlock?
Some habits should carry over: communicating with teammates, tracking enemy abilities, recognizing the importance of roles, and making decisions around shared objectives. The physical execution does not transfer perfectly. Overhead selection and strategy control differ from third-person camera management and aiming, and Deadlock’s evolving systems may not match Dota 2’s conventions.
Can a low-end PC run Deadlock?
There is not enough official information to answer responsibly. Deadlock’s operating-system and processor fields are listed as not yet specified, and its minimum memory and storage figures are not established in the current listing. Dota 2’s published minimums—4 GB of RAM and 60 GB of storage—apply to Dota 2 only.
Bottom line for different players
Deadlock is the more relevant choice for players curious about Valve’s attempt to fuse third-person shooting with MOBA competition, provided they accept invitation-only access and ongoing change. Dota 2 is the practical choice for anyone who wants a free, released game today, with more than 100 heroes, flexible roles, powerful items, published PC requirements, and a mature strategic identity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Deadlock basically Dota 2 in third person?
No. Both games have team-based MOBA DNA, but Deadlock is an unfinished third-person shooter and hero-shooter experiment, while Dota 2 is a mature overhead strategy MOBA with a documented hero, role, ability, and item ecosystem.
Which is harder, Deadlock or Dota 2?
There is no reliable final ranking while Deadlock is unfinished. Dota 2 is officially tagged “Difficult” and has more than 100 heroes, flexible roles, abilities, and items. Deadlock may feel more familiar to shooter players, but changing rules and incomplete documentation can make it difficult in a different way.
Can I play Deadlock now?
Only if you receive access through the current playtest invitation system. Valve says access is limited to friend invites via playtesters, and the Steam listing gives no public release date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs Deadlock free like Dota 2?
Dota 2 is explicitly marked free to play, and Valve says all heroes are free. Deadlock does not have a finalized public release or published general pricing information; its immediate access model is invitation-based.
What is the difference between a hero shooter and a MOBA?
A hero shooter emphasizes direct character control, aiming, and action-game positioning. A MOBA emphasizes team objectives, hero abilities, strategic roles, and battlefield-wide decisions. Deadlock carries both labels, while Dota 2 is presented primarily as a strategy-focused MOBA.
Will my PC run Deadlock or Dota 2?
Dota 2 has published requirements for Windows, macOS, and Linux, including 4 GB minimum RAM and 60 GB minimum storage. Deadlock currently lists its operating-system and processor requirements as not yet specified, so its final compatibility cannot yet be predicted.
Are Deadlock’s current abilities and maps permanent?
Not necessarily. Valve warns that the build contains temporary art and experimental gameplay. Heroes, abilities, balance, maps, interface elements, and other systems can change during development.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I buy a guide or upgrade hardware for Deadlock?
Wait for clearer official specifications and a more settled build. Dota 2’s requirements cannot be used to predict Deadlock performance, and advice written for an older test version may become outdated.
The Bottom Line
Choose Dota 2 for immediate, free access to a mature strategy MOBA; choose Deadlock only if you want an invite-limited, changing experiment in third-person shooter and MOBA design.
