Deadlock is not publicly available on Steam. As of October 18, 2026, Valve lists it as an early-development playtest with access limited to friend invites from people who already have playtest access. The Steam release date is still “To be announced.”
The legitimate path is to connect with an existing tester, become Steam friends, receive an invitation through the playtest system, and install the game from Steam after accepting it. Valve has not published a Deadlock-specific invite quota, minimum Steam spending requirement, account-age rule, or guaranteed playtest duration.
What the Deadlock invite system actually allows
Valve’s current Steam listing describes Deadlock as being in “early development stages with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay.” Access is “currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters.” That wording establishes two important boundaries:
Recommended Free Tools
- You cannot simply add Deadlock to a public Steam store library and start playing.
- An invitation must come from someone whose Steam account already has Deadlock playtest access.
The listing does not announce an open beta, a public sign-up queue, a retail release, or a purchase that unlocks the game. Its release date remains “To be announced,” so an invite should be treated as access to an ongoing test rather than ownership of a released product.

How to get a legitimate Deadlock invite
1. Find an existing Deadlock playtester
The person sending the invitation must already have Deadlock playtest access. Being a general Steam user, owning other games, or possessing a game-related gift card does not make someone an eligible inviter. Ask the person to confirm that Deadlock appears in their Steam account and that they can see the game’s invite controls.
Do not pay a stranger for a code, an account, or a promise of access. Valve’s public listing identifies friend invitations as the official route; it does not identify a marketplace for transferable invites.

Send or accept a Steam friend request using the account that you intend to use for Deadlock. Keep the account identity consistent: an invitation sent to one Steam account does not automatically transfer to another account, and an account seller cannot provide a safe substitute for your own account.
The official notice confirms the friend relationship requirement, but it does not publish a waiting period. If an inviter says you must remain friends for a particular number of hours or days, treat that as the inviter’s experience or a community practice, not as a rule Valve has documented on the listing.

3. Have the tester send the playtest invitation
The inviter should use the Deadlock playtest invite flow available to their account. Valve’s store page does not document every screen or button, and the labels can change during development. A community guide describes the delivery process, but that guide is not a Valve policy document.
The sender should verify the recipient’s Steam account name before submitting the invitation. Sending it to the wrong account can leave the intended recipient waiting even though the inviter believes the request was completed.

4. Watch Steam for the invitation
Check the recipient account’s Steam playtest-invite area and the notifications associated with that account. Also check the Steam client and web interface while signed in to the same identity that received the friend request. A message in a chat window is not the same thing as an official playtest entitlement.
If nothing appears immediately, ask the inviter to confirm which account received the invitation and whether their invite action completed successfully. Avoid clicking third-party “activation” pages that ask for a Steam password, browser cookie, remote-control session, or payment.
5. Accept, then install through Steam
Accept the invitation inside Steam. Once the entitlement is attached to your account, install Deadlock from the Steam client or your Steam library. Do not download an executable from a file-sharing site or a link sent by an alleged inviter. The official installation path is Steam after the invitation has been accepted.

How many people can one tester invite?
There is no confirmed Deadlock-specific number on Valve’s public listing. Steamworks, Valve’s developer documentation for Steam Playtest, provides a generic control that lets a developer set 1, 2, or 3 invites per player. Developers can also pause new friend invitations or limit the feature to players who joined by a selected date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThose are available Steamworks settings, not a published Deadlock quota. Valve has not stated whether Deadlock uses one of those values, changes the allowance over time, or applies additional limits. Therefore, an answer such as “every tester gets exactly three invites” is not supported by the official Deadlock page.
| Question | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Can a playtester invite friends? | Yes. Valve says access is limited to friend invites via playtesters. | The exact Deadlock quota per tester. |
| Does Steam Playtest have invite limits? | Developers can configure 1, 2, or 3 invites per player in the generic system. | Which setting Deadlock currently uses. |
| Can Valve pause invitations? | Steamworks supports pausing new friend invites. | Whether Deadlock invitations are paused at a particular moment. |
| Can eligibility be date-limited? | Steamworks supports restricting invites to players who joined by a chosen date. | Any Deadlock-specific cutoff date. |
Do you need to spend money on Steam?
Valve’s cited Deadlock listing does not publish a minimum Steam purchase, wallet balance, account age, or spending threshold for receiving or sending an invitation. It also does not state a regional spending requirement. You should not buy a game, wallet credit, or gift card merely to satisfy an alleged Deadlock requirement.
Community discussions sometimes claim that limited Steam accounts cannot send or receive these invitations. That claim is not confirmed by Valve in the listing described above. If your account cannot use a particular Steam function, follow the restriction shown directly by Steam support or the client; do not treat an unverified community rule as proof that a purchase will unlock Deadlock.
A generic Steam gift card, gaming mouse, headset, PC upgrade, or guidebook does not grant Deadlock access. No currently documented product acts as an access token.

Official and unofficial ways to seek access
Use the comparison below to separate the supported path from offers that create account or scam risk.
| Method | Existing tester required? | Steam account identity | Valve support | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Friend invitation from a current playtester | Yes | Invitation is tied to the recipient account | Supported by the official access notice | Availability and quota can change |
| Paid invite from a stranger | Claimed, but not verifiable | May involve a request for login details | Not identified by Valve | Fraud, phishing, or stolen accounts |
| Purchased or borrowed Steam account | No reliable proof | Belongs to someone else or violates account expectations | Not identified by Valve | Loss of access, recovery disputes, or account compromise |
| Gift card or unrelated hardware purchase | No | Does not add a playtest entitlement | Not identified by Valve | Unnecessary spending and misleading advertising |
Troubleshooting a missing invitation
The inviter cannot find an invite control
First confirm that the inviter truly has Deadlock playtest access, not merely a screenshot, a community role, or a video showing someone else’s account. Steamworks allows developers to pause or restrict invitations, and Valve has not promised that every tester can invite at all times. If the control is absent, the inviter should not use a third-party workaround.
You are friends but no invitation arrives
Verify that both people are using the intended Steam accounts and that the friend request was accepted rather than merely sent. Check the account’s playtest-invite area and Steam notifications, then ask the inviter to confirm the recipient identity. Do not assume that a delay means a paid service is required.
A community post says your account is ineligible
Separate a message displayed by Steam from a claim repeated by users. Valve has not published a minimum spending amount, account-age rule, or region restriction for Deadlock in the cited listing. If Steam itself displays a restriction, save the exact wording and use Steam’s official support channels; a forum assertion alone is not policy.
A seller sends a download link or asks for credentials
Stop the transaction. Deadlock should be installed through Steam after the entitlement is accepted. Never provide a password, one-time code, recovery code, browser session, or remote desktop access to obtain an invite. Report the account or listing through the relevant platform and secure your Steam account if you already disclosed credentials.

You accepted an invite but cannot install the game
Sign out of other Steam accounts, return to the account that accepted the invitation, and refresh the library or restart the Steam client. Confirm that the entitlement was accepted rather than merely advertised in a message. If the game is still unavailable, the issue may be an account-side entitlement or a temporary playtest change; only Steam can confirm the account’s status.
Is Deadlock free yet?
Deadlock is not currently available as a public Steam release. Because Valve lists the release date as “To be announced” and access remains restricted to playtest invitations, there is no public purchase price or open-access offer to evaluate. Calling it “free” would imply general availability that the listing does not provide.
An accepted playtest invitation may let you install and run the test without buying Deadlock, but Valve’s public materials do not promise that the playtest will continue indefinitely or that its terms will match a future release.

Valve explicitly warns that the project contains temporary art and experimental gameplay. Expect features, balance, interface elements, and technical behavior to change. An invitation is permission to participate in the current test, not a guarantee that every build, mode, or piece of progress will remain available.
Keep your Steam account secure, install only from Steam, and rely on the current Valve listing for changes to availability. Community guides can help explain where users commonly find an invite, but they cannot establish a quota, spending requirement, or permanent-access promise that Valve has not published.
