Deadlock is a free Valve game that combines third-person shooting with MOBA systems: six-player teams share lanes, defeat troopers, collect souls, buy items, develop abilities, and destroy the opposing base. It is still an unfinished, invite-only PC game rather than a public release. Access, heroes, progression, and competitive rules can change while Valve continues development.
What is Deadlock?
Deadlock blends a third-person hero shooter with the structure of a lane-based multiplayer online battle arena. You aim and fire from behind your selected hero, use abilities and melee attacks, move through lanes, fight waves of troopers, gather souls, purchase upgrades, and push toward the enemy base. Winning is ultimately about converting those resources and fights into objective progress, not simply recording the most eliminations.
The game is free, but “free” does not mean openly downloadable by everyone. As of October 2026, access remains invite-only through a Steam friend who already has the game. There is no paid access option or public sign-up process, and Valve has not announced a full-release date. Treat every access offer that asks you to pay as unrelated to Valve’s current system.

Invite-only access
You need an invitation from a Steam friend who already plays Deadlock. You cannot buy access and cannot join a public registration queue. Once invited, the game is associated with your Steam account under Valve’s current testing arrangement.

Platform and controls
- Platform: Windows PC through Steam.
- Consoles and Mac: No version is listed for either platform.
- Input: The design is built around mouse and keyboard, with Steam Input controller support available.
- Cost: The game itself is free; the restriction is who can access it, not a purchase price.
Because this is an unfinished build, menus, eligibility checks, progression screens, and available modes may change without a conventional “launch” announcement.
How many heroes are in Deadlock?
The cited current FAQ counted 43 playable heroes on October 16, 2026. That number is a dated snapshot, not a permanent roster size. Valve scheduled Nurse Harrow for October 20 as the sixth hero associated with the City Never Sleeps update, so the count may change when that update arrives or when other heroes are enabled.
Check the in-game roster or the latest patch information before relying on a hero count. A hero can be added, temporarily changed, or adjusted between matches while the game is in development.

Do not choose solely from a tier list. Frequent balance updates can make a list obsolete, and a hero that is statistically strong may still be a poor first choice if its controls are difficult for you. Compare candidates on six practical axes:
| Axis | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Mechanical complexity | How many abilities, aim patterns, movement inputs, and timing decisions must you manage at once? |
| Range | Can the hero contribute safely from distance, or must you enter close fights? |
| Mobility | Does the kit provide reliable escapes, repositioning, or ways to reach a target? |
| Durability | How much punishment can you take before retreating? |
| Ability-control demands | Do abilities require precise placement, combinations, or reactions to enemy movement? |
| Forgiveness | Can you survive a missed shot or mistimed cooldown, or does one error usually end the fight? |
For a first session, favor a hero whose range and durability let you observe lane patterns while learning movement and aiming. After several games, switch to a more demanding character if you want to practice mobility, crowd control, or ability combos. Use Sandbox and bot matches to test a kit before taking it into a competitive queue.
How long is a Deadlock match?
A normal Standard match usually lasts 25 to 45 minutes. The exact time depends on how quickly teams secure lane income, win or lose fights, and turn those advantages into base pressure. Plan for a full match rather than assuming you can leave after a short round.

Street Brawl is the quicker alternative. It is a 4v4 mode made of short rounds, so an individual round is much shorter than a Standard match. The other available activities serve different purposes:

What happens during a Standard match?
- Choose a hero and enter a lane. Your early objective is to learn the lane route, protect your health, and secure safe income rather than forcing every possible duel.
- Fight troopers and collect souls. Lane income gives you the currency used for purchases and contributes to progression milestones.
- Spend before the next major fight. Returning with enough health and ammunition to take the next wave is often more useful than staying for one risky extra exchange.
- Convert the advantage into pressure. An item or ability upgrade should help you win the next fight, survive a dangerous push, or take more lane income.
- Advance the objective. Kills matter because they create time and space for lanes, structures, and the eventual base-destruction objective.
A large net-worth number is not an automatic win. If those souls remain unspent, the advantage may not improve your next duel. Conversely, a smaller but well-timed purchase can immediately change a fight.
How do souls, boons, and ability points work?
Souls are both money and progression fuel
Souls are earned through play, especially from lane income, and serve two connected purposes. You spend them in the shop for items that affect your current combat power, and they also advance hero progression. This makes safe income valuable even when you are not fighting another player.
Boons mark progression milestones
Boons are milestones tied to the souls you earn. A boon may grant a stat increase, provide an ability point, or unlock something new. The exact reward depends on the progression state and the current game systems, which Valve is still adjusting.
Unlocking versus upgrading an ability
An ability point can unlock an ability, adding another action to your kit, or upgrade an ability you already have. An unlock expands what your hero can do; an upgrade changes how an existing action works. When deciding between them, compare immediate fight impact with long-term scaling and ask whether the new action solves a problem you are currently facing.
- Choose an immediate combat item when the next fight is imminent and your current kit is functional.
- Choose an ability unlock when lacking a tool such as escape, control, or reliable damage is costing fights.
- Choose an upgrade when an existing ability already does the job but needs more range, damage, durability, or utility.
Can you play Deadlock with friends?
Standard parties
Standard is the normal social mode. The current FAQ states that players can party together without a stated party-size limit or stated skill-gap limit. That policy can change, but there is no listed restriction comparable to Ranked’s solo-or-duo rule.

Street Brawl and bot groups
Street Brawl offers shorter 4v4 rounds for a group that wants faster games. Bot Match supports Standard or Street Brawl against easy, medium, or hard bots, either alone or with friends. Bots are useful for learning a hero without placing a new character directly into a competitive queue.
Custom matches
Custom matches support up to 12 players, enough for two full six-player teams. Use them for private practice, arranged games, or testing a strategy without relying on public matchmaking.
Ranked parties
Ranked currently permits solo or duo queues. A group of three or more should use Standard, Street Brawl, or a custom lobby instead. Also note the roster rule introduced with the January 30, 2026 update: parties of three or more need four heroes in their roster rather than three.
What are the current Ranked requirements?
The requirements listed against the October 6 patch are 60 Standard wins and three unlocked heroes. Season 1 is scheduled to end on November 5, 2026. These are current-season conditions, not a promise that every future season will use the same gate.
- Win 60 Standard matches.
- Unlock at least three heroes.
- Queue alone or with one other player; larger parties are not currently allowed in Ranked.
Valve has said that progression and hero or hideout customization are areas it expects to adjust substantially from player feedback before full release. Recheck the in-game Ranked panel after patches, especially near a season boundary, because eligibility and progression rules can move.

The January 30, 2026 update added hero banning to Standard and Street Brawl. Each player can mark one hero to avoid, and two total bans are used. A ban is therefore a limited team-level tool, not a way for every player to remove a different hero from the match.

- Hear Enemies From All Sides. DTS Headphone:X 2.0 surround sound(1) lets you hear enemies sneaking behind you, special ability cues, and immersive environments. It’s positional clarity that can make the difference between victory and defeat. Experience three-dimensional audio that goes beyond 7.1 channels to make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. (1) DTS Headphone:X 2.0 requires Logitech G HUB Software.
- Be Heard Loud and Clear. The big 6 mm boom mic makes sure you’re heard by gaming partners and mutes when flipped up.
- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
When selecting a ban, remove a hero that creates a specific problem for your planned composition or lane strategy. Do not assume a ban remains optimal after a balance patch; a character’s strengths and counters can change.
What should you practice first?
- Complete the tutorial. Learn the movement, shooting, melee, lane, and base objectives before experimenting with advanced builds.
- Use Sandbox. Check ability ranges, cooldowns, movement options, and item interactions without match pressure.
- Play against easy bots. Concentrate on collecting souls, spending them promptly, and returning to lane with enough health and ammunition.
- Move to medium bots or Street Brawl. Practice reacting to opponents while keeping your income and upgrades on schedule.
- Play Standard with friends. Coordinate lanes and talk through when to retreat, spend, or contest an objective.
- Enter Ranked only after the requirements are met. A new mode should test decision-making, not introduce basic controls for the first time.
PC troubleshooting for launch, stutter, or crashes
Deadlock is a Windows PC game distributed through Steam and designed around mouse and keyboard. If it fails to launch or performs poorly, work through the basics before changing in-game strategy:
- Restart Steam and Windows, then try launching again.
- Verify the game’s files in Steam if an update was interrupted or files appear damaged.
- Install current graphics drivers and reboot after the installation.
- Disable overlays and background capture tools temporarily to check for conflicts.
- Confirm that DirectX 11 components and Windows updates are current.
- If stutter began after a patch, record the map, mode, graphics settings, and whether the issue affects every match; that information helps separate a local configuration problem from a game update regression.
Do not assume a hardware purchase will fix every performance issue. A gaming mouse for Deadlock can make mouse-and-keyboard aiming more comfortable, but it cannot resolve missing drivers, corrupted files, or an unstable overlay.
What is likely to change before full release?
Valve has explicitly identified progression and hero or hideout customization as systems it wants to adjust significantly based on feedback. That statement matters beyond cosmetics: soul milestones, boons, ability-point behavior, access rules, the hero roster, matchmaking restrictions, and season requirements may all evolve while Deadlock remains unfinished.
Use the October 2026 numbers in this guide as a snapshot: 43 heroes counted on October 16, Nurse Harrow scheduled for October 20, 60 Standard wins and three heroes for the current Ranked gate, and a November 5 Season 1 endpoint. Check the latest in-game notices whenever a patch changes your access, roster, or queue eligibility.
