Deadlock reached a verified peak of 303,347 concurrent players on Steam on 16 October 2026, according to SteamDB. That milestone is notable because Valve still distributes the game by invitation and describes it as an unfinished early-development project. The surge followed the City Never Sleeps update, which introduced six playable heroes, a redesigned New York-inspired map and wider gameplay changes, although the available evidence does not prove that any single hero caused the record.
What the 300,000-player milestone actually measures
SteamDB’s figure is a peak concurrent count: the largest number of people playing on Steam at the same moment. It is not a count of everyone who has ever accessed Deadlock, the number of unique players over a day or the number of owners. SteamDB reports its timestamps in UTC, placing the record on 16 October 2026.
| Figure | What it represents | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 303,347 | Deadlock’s all-time Steam peak concurrent players | Recorded by SteamDB on 16 October 2026; a simultaneous-player peak, not a unique-player total |
| More than 228,000 | Concurrent players reported after the City Never Sleeps update | Reported by GamesRadar+ while the game was still in closed beta |
A concurrent peak can be reached by a large invited audience playing at the same time, even when the game has not opened registration to everyone. It should therefore not be read as proof that 303,347 different people joined during that day.
Why the record is linked to City Never Sleeps
The 303,347 peak came after, or in close proximity to, the City Never Sleeps release. GamesRadar+ had already reported more than 228,000 concurrent players following the update. The timing makes the update a reasonable explanation for the acceleration, but it does not establish a controlled cause-and-effect result.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
A community Reddit post credited the record to a newly added hero. That is player speculation rather than an official Valve analysis, and the available data does not identify one hero as solely responsible. The safer conclusion is that a substantial, hero-focused update coincided with the record.
What the City Never Sleeps update changed
Six new playable heroes
The update added six playable characters, expanding the roster and giving existing testers new matchups and team compositions to learn. No official source in the available reporting singles out one of those heroes as the specific driver of the player spike.

A redesigned New York-inspired map
City Never Sleeps also delivered a redesigned map drawing on New York imagery. A map redesign can bring back current testers, attract invited friends and create a shared reason for players to return at the same time, but the reporting does not quantify how much of the peak came from map changes.

Beyond heroes and the map, Valve made wider gameplay adjustments. Because the game is still experimental, these changes are part of an ongoing design process rather than a final launch patch with fixed systems.

How Deadlock can reach 300,000 players while invite-only
“Invite-only” describes access control, not a maximum population. Every invited player can still bring eligible friends into the test, and a popular update can motivate a large existing invite pool to play simultaneously. Deadlock’s peak demonstrates the scale of its access network, not that Valve has opened the game to public downloading or registration.
Valve’s archived August 2024 update said the project would remain invite-only and in an early-development stage, with temporary art and experimental gameplay. A September 2026 development report repeated the unfinished status and explained that putting the game in players’ hands early helps Valve discover what is fun and what is not. Those statements remain consistent with a very high test population: broad testing is being used to shape the product before a public release decision.

Is Deadlock open to everyone yet?
No. The latest status in the cited Valve updates is still invite-only access, and the game is not presented as a finished public release. A concurrent-player record does not change that access policy. Anyone without an invitation should not assume that the 300,000 figure means an open beta or unrestricted Steam availability.
How to read the milestone in context
- It is a Steam peak: 303,347 is the highest simultaneous count recorded, not a lifetime audience.
- It reflects a test build: Valve continues to describe Deadlock as early and unfinished, with temporary art and experimental systems.
- It followed a major update: City Never Sleeps combined six heroes, a map redesign and broader gameplay changes.
- Timing is not proof of causation: the update and the record are associated in time, while claims that one hero definitively caused the spike remain unverified.
What the record says about Deadlock’s development
The number shows that Valve can generate launch-scale attention without switching to open access. It also gives the studio a large, active testing population for balancing heroes, evaluating map changes and identifying which experimental systems players enjoy. The same figure should not be mistaken for a release date, a promise of permanent player counts or evidence that the current build has the polish of a finished product.
