Deadlock is a 6v6 third-person MOBA shooter. You aim and move like a shooter, but you win by turning lane income, item timing and team fights into structure damage and finally destroying the enemy Patron. A high kill count cannot win a match if the opposing team keeps its objectives alive.
This guide explains the control functions to learn first, how stamina and Souls shape every decision, what Guardians and Walkers do, how the objective chain opens the enemy base, and a practical plan for your first matches. Names and structure health values below reflect the game data cited by Deadlock.io in 2026; keybinds can change with patches or your own settings.
What a Deadlock match is trying to make you do
Each team has six players, lanes to farm, defensive structures to break and a base to protect. Deadlock Atlas describes the core loop as choosing a hero, farming Souls, buying items, leveling abilities and destroying objectives. Shooting skill matters, but the map economy decides how often you can take favorable fights and how much damage a successful fight produces.
The useful mental model is lane income → purchase → controlled fight or rotation → structure progress → reset. A kill is valuable when it lets your team collect a wave, take a Guardian or Walker, secure a map reward, or force the enemy away from an objective. Chasing a low-health hero while abandoning Souls and a free wave can leave you poorer even when the chase succeeds.

Controls: learn functions before memorizing keys
Deadlock does not have one permanent keyboard table for every player. Keybinds are configurable, and patches can change button glyphs or controller hints. Open the keybind settings and identify the function assigned to each action rather than assuming a key from someone else’s layout.
Movement and camera
- Movement: directional input moves your hero while the mouse or right stick controls the camera and aim.
- Jump, mantle and aerial movement: use these to cross geometry, reach elevated angles and escape routes. A mantle is different from simply jumping because it uses nearby ledges and surfaces.
- Crouch and slide: crouching changes your profile and a slide can preserve speed through a movement line. Learn where a slide ends before relying on it during a fight.
- Dash and other movement actions: these are limited resources, not free forward motion. Their availability determines whether you can disengage after an exchange.
Combat inputs
- Fire and aim: keep the crosshair on the intended target and learn your weapon’s effective range.
- Reload: reload behind cover or during a safe movement beat instead of beginning an exposed reload in front of an enemy.
- Hero abilities: four ability inputs are assigned to your hero’s kit. Read each ability’s range, cast time, cooldown and movement interaction before entering a serious fight.
- Active items: an active item is triggered by pressing its assigned key; it is not a passive stat. The Slowing Hex item page uses the current example binding group Z/X/C/V. Your layout may differ, so verify the actual assignment in settings.
Information controls
Put the scoreboard, minimap and any extra-information display on keys you can reach without losing control of movement. The scoreboard helps you read team and enemy state; the minimap shows missing heroes, lane pressure and objective context. In a fight, information is useful only if you can check it quickly and return your aim to the target.
Controller and changing button prompts
Official patch notes document keyboard, mouse and controller glyphs, keybind settings and in-match button-hint updates. If a prompt does not match your hardware, check the current binding rather than treating the prompt as a universal default. Spend a short practice session confirming every ability, item and movement input before your first serious match.

Stamina is a movement budget
Deadlock’s movement guide treats stamina as a budget for reaching a position while retaining a response. Walking, sliding and mantling can preserve options; dashes and aerial actions have their own limits. The beginner error is spending every movement option to enter a fight, then discovering that there is no escape when an enemy arrives.
Before you move into a lane or objective, ask which movement action gets you out if the trade turns bad. Arrive with one escape route available. Use a dash to cross dangerous space, dodge a committed ability or leave a losing fight, not automatically as the first step of every approach. Terrain, ledges and cover can be part of your escape plan, so movement skill is also map knowledge.

The match loop, step by step
- Choose a lane and hero plan. Know the short ability sequence you want to practice and where your first safe retreat is.
- Work the wave. Help clear enemy units and stay close enough to collect Souls from lane activity. Watch for nearby pickups rather than tunnel-visioning on an enemy hero.
- Read the trade. Take a fight when your health, ammunition, cooldowns and position support it. Do not leave a valuable wave for a low-probability chase.
- Spend Souls with a job in mind. Buy an item that answers a current problem—survivability, damage, range, mobility or control—rather than purchasing randomly.
- Return before the opponent gets a free push. The Getting started guide recommends coming back with enough health, ammunition and position to collect the next wave.
- Rotate only for a purpose. Move to another lane or objective to protect an ally, defend a structure, join a planned fight or claim a reward. A rotation that accomplishes none of these usually costs more Souls than it gains.
- Convert a won fight. After an enemy dies or retreats, identify the lasting result available now: a wave, Guardian, Walker, vision and map control, or a safe neutral objective.
- Reset when the finish is unsafe. Low health, empty ammunition, missing teammates or imminent enemy respawns can turn a promising push into a reversal. Spend the advantage, then leave.
Souls, denies and ability points
What Souls do
Souls are both the match economy and a progression resource. You obtain them from lane activity and nearby rewards, then use them to buy items and advance your hero. The economy is continuous: every missed wave delays a purchase, and a delayed purchase can make the next fight harder.
Track two forms of value after a wave. First, collect the Souls that safely belong to you. Second, watch flying Soul orbs created by lane activity. An enemy can contest an orb with a deny, so securing the orb is a small timing duel rather than an automatic reward. Position where you can collect your own income without exposing yourself to unnecessary damage.

Souls are not ability points
The glossary defines AP as ability points. AP and Souls are separate systems: Souls are the economic resource that also drives progression, while AP is used for ability advancement. Do not assume that having enough Souls automatically grants every ability upgrade; check the ability screen and the available AP.
How to decide between farming and fighting
Compare the next wave, a safe purchase, a defensive response and an objective before leaving lane. If an enemy is visible but cannot be finished safely, collecting guaranteed Souls may be the stronger play. A fight becomes more attractive when it protects a structure, denies a large reward, or creates enough time to take an objective afterward.
Objectives and the route to the Patron
The win condition is destroying the enemy Patron. Reaching the enemy base does not make the Patron immediately killable; the remaining defenses and the current objective stage determine what can be attacked. The structure chain below is a simplified map guide using current game data cited by Deadlock.io in 2026.

| Objective | Current listed health | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Guardian | 5,500 HP | First major lane defense. Breaking it opens deeper access to that lane. |
| Walker | 4,000 HP | Lane objective behind the Guardian. Destroying an enemy Walker opens an extra item slot. |
| Base Guardian | 6,000 HP | Base defense that must be cleared as the team advances toward the final area. |
| Patron | 12,000 HP | Final enemy objective; destroying it ends the match after the required defenses and stages are available. |
Guardians
Guardians are the first major lane defenses. A damaged Guardian is not merely a structure with fewer hit points: it is a persistent map advantage that makes the next wave and future rotations safer. Do not dive under it simply because an enemy hero is low. Account for your health, ammunition, minion pressure and escape route before committing.

Walkers
Walkers sit behind Guardians and are worth converting into when your team has lane control. Their destruction opens an extra item slot for the attacking team, so a Walker can improve future item flexibility as well as remove a defensive obstacle. If the enemy has just been forced out, clear the wave and damage the Walker instead of extending a chase with no objective attached.
Base Guardians, Shrines and the Patron
Base Guardians protect the final approach. The Patron guide explains that the base’s remaining defenses and the current objective stage control what can be attacked. Shrines and the Patron therefore belong to a sequence, not a single all-in button: clear the available defenses, follow the stage that becomes active, and only then commit to finishing the Patron. Destroying the Patron ends the match; kills elsewhere do not.
Situational map objectives
Not every reward should be taken on every spawn. The correct choice depends on team health, enemy respawns, lane pressure, travel time and the reward’s immediate value.
Mid-Boss and the Rejuvenator
The map objectives guide says a Rejuvenator provides team revive credits. That reward can change the risk calculation for a planned push, but the fight still costs health and time. Check enemy positions and respawn timers before starting; an opponent who arrives first can turn the attempt into a team wipe.

Spirit Urn
The Soul Urn provides a delivery reward. Carrying it exposes a predictable route, so coordinate the delivery with lane pressure and teammates who can protect the carrier. A delivery is not automatically better than a wave or structure if it leaves another lane open.
Unstable Rift and neutral camps
Urn delivery and Unstable Rift are separate events with different preparations. Treat them as different plans rather than interchangeable labels. Neutral camps and other map events are timing tools: take them when your team can afford the travel and when the reward will not cost a safer, more urgent objective.
Turning a fight into lasting progress
When a fight ends, use a quick conversion checklist:
- Can the nearest wave be collected safely?
- Is a Guardian or Walker exposed before enemies respawn?
- Can the team take a map reward without splitting into isolated targets?
- Does low health or ammunition require an immediate reset?
- Which enemy movement or defensive cooldown is still unavailable?
The best result is often modest but permanent: one structure, a denied wave, an extra item slot from a Walker, or safe control of the next route. Do not confuse walking farther into the enemy base with making more progress. If the current objective stage is locked, back out and prepare the next wave instead of donating the advantage.
A practical first-match plan
- Pick one hero and one short sequence. Learn how to start a trade, how to disengage and which ability should be saved for an escape.
- Stay near the wave. Collect Souls and nearby rewards while avoiding unnecessary exposure. Keep the minimap in your peripheral check routine.
- Buy for a clear problem. If you die before using abilities, prioritize survivability or positioning; if enemies escape with little health, consider damage or range. The purchase should have a stated job.
- Preserve stamina. Enter each exchange with at least one movement option or a reachable piece of cover.
- Rotate with an objective. Tell yourself what the move protects or takes: an ally, a structure, a reward or a forced reset.
- Push the structure chain. Use a won fight to take the nearest safe Guardian or Walker, then reassess the next stage rather than automatically diving deeper.
- Reset on time. Return when health, ammunition, cooldowns or enemy respawns make the next fight unfavorable.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Chasing kills instead of collecting the wave
Symptom: you win a duel but arrive late to the next wave and fall behind in Souls. Fix: ask whether the chase protects or takes an objective. If not, secure the nearby reward first.

Using every dash to approach
Symptom: the enemy disengages or receives help and you have no way out. Fix: walk, slide or mantle through safe space and reserve a dash for the exchange’s turning point.
Activating items too late
Symptom: an active item remains unused while your hero dies. Fix: bind the item where you can reach it, test the input in a safe setting and treat its cooldown as part of your combat plan.
Attacking the Patron too early
Symptom: the team reaches the base but cannot finish the final objective. Fix: identify the current defense and stage first. Clear the available Base Guardians and follow the sequence that opens the Patron.
Rotating without a destination
Symptom: you leave a lane, gain no kill or objective and return after losing a wave. Fix: state the destination and reward before moving. If you cannot name one, keep farming or hold the structure.
Terms you will hear in team communication
- Deny: contesting an enemy’s flying Soul orb.
- Rotation: moving toward another lane or map area to affect a fight, defense or objective.
- Peel: helping an ally escape pressure, usually by blocking, controlling or threatening the attacker.
- Spirit Power: a character stat. It is not the same thing as spirit damage, which is a damage type.
- Silence: prevents specified ability use.
- Stun: disables the target for the effect’s duration.
- Disarm: removes the target’s ability to use its weapon.
- Immobilize: prevents movement while other actions may depend on the specific effect.
Use a destination or target with these terms—“peel our carry,” “deny the orb,” or “rotate to Walker”—so teammates know the action you want rather than only the label.
How to compare heroes, builds or equipment
Roles and builds describe a plan or contribution; they do not guarantee identical purchases or outcomes. For a beginner comparison, use practical questions:
- How demanding is the movement and ability timing?
- How safely can the hero collect lane Souls?
- How much range and aim precision does the kit require?
- What team utility does it provide—damage, control, protection or initiation?
- How reliable is its escape when stamina is low?
- Can a won fight be converted clearly into a wave, structure or objective?
The same framework applies to equipment. A gaming mouse can directly help with mouse aiming and configurable bindings, but no particular brand or model is required; comfort, reliable inputs and access to the keys you use matter more than a logo.
