Deadline Buddy is described by its author as a scholarship-discovery tool that compares a student’s documented profile with published eligibility criteria and explains each result as Eligible, Not Eligible, or Needs Verification. That uncertainty label is central: the project’s stated aim is to show when a requirement cannot be decided from the available evidence, rather than turn every partial match into a confident score.

What is Deadline Buddy?

Deadline Buddy is a scholarship discovery and eligibility-explanation application presented by its author, Piyush Gupta, in a DEV Community project article posted October 4, 2026. The author says it was built for a friend studying computer science in India who was considering graduate study abroad. Its stated goal is to make scholarship requirements easier to assess than manually searching long PDF guidelines and program websites.

The author’s tagline is: “Find scholarships you’re actually eligible for — without reading hundreds of PDF guidelines.” Treat that as project positioning, not an independently verified performance claim. The project article labels the application open source and describes a sample walkthrough involving 26 scholarships; neither point establishes the current state of its repository, live availability, license, scholarship catalog, or whether any current records are complete and up to date.

How the stated workflow works

  1. Add student documents. The project article says the application accepts PDF, DOCX, and TXT materials, including transcripts, resumes, and certificates.
  2. Review an extracted profile. It describes extracting fields such as GPA, year of study, degree, graduation year, skills, and achievements into an editable profile. Document quotes are said to support the extracted information, so a student can inspect and correct profile details before relying on them.
  3. Select a destination. The article names the USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Australia, Netherlands, Singapore, and Japan. It says the application provides destination context for currencies, deadlines, and official guides. Current country support and scholarship coverage have not been independently checked.
  4. Compare profile evidence with requirements. The evaluator is described as deterministic code that checks profile attributes against published scholarship requirements and assigns one of three outcome labels.
  5. Review explanations and save opportunities. The project article says explanations pair a requirement clause with extracted student evidence and a quote from the source document, alongside a link to an official scholarship or university portal. Saved opportunities are described as prioritized by deadline.

What the three eligibility labels mean

Label Meaning in the project article How to use it
Eligible Every checkable published requirement passes against the available profile information. Read the linked official criteria and confirm that the source and application details match the scholarship you plan to pursue.
Not Eligible A hard requirement fails. Inspect which requirement is identified as the failure; do not assume that a different scholarship or program uses the same rule.
Needs Verification Evidence is missing, or a requirement is subjective or otherwise cannot be concluded from the available documents. Use the cited clause to identify what needs clarification, then check with the official scholarship or university source.

The distinction matters because not every criterion can be reduced to a document field. A stated GPA threshold may be checkable if the profile contains the right grading information; a judgment such as leadership or degree equivalence may depend on context or an official interpretation. The “Needs Verification” state signals that the application’s described logic does not claim to settle such a question automatically.

Questions the motivating example raises

The project article frames its use around difficult questions a student might encounter while evaluating overseas scholarships. These are motivating examples, not actual scholarship rulings:

  • “Does a 4-year Indian B.Tech degree count as final-year standing right now?”
  • “Does an 8.4 / 10 CGPA meet the ‘first-class honours or 2:1 equivalent’ threshold?”
  • “Does a national hackathon finalist certificate satisfy ‘demonstrated community leadership’?”

For questions like these, an explanation is useful only if it makes the underlying requirement and evidence visible. A match label alone cannot establish how a particular scholarship defines academic equivalence, current study standing, or leadership. Check the relevant official rules and seek clarification from the scholarship provider when its wording does not resolve the case.

What the author says goes beyond matching

AI Strategy Advisor

The project article describes an AI Strategy Advisor that proposes a gap plan and alternatives. This is a feature claim from the author’s article; the application and its recommendations were not independently tested.

Guideline Lab

The article also describes a Guideline Lab where a user can paste scholarship announcement text to test guideline extraction. That description does not establish how well it handles different announcement formats or whether its extracted rules are accurate.

What to verify before relying on a result

The project article’s described workflow provides a rationale to inspect, but it does not by itself verify the scholarship record behind that rationale. Before acting on an eligibility result or deadline, check:

  • The official source. Follow the scholarship or university link and confirm that the program, eligibility clause, and application route are the ones you intend to use.
  • Currency of the information. The article describes deadline-first prioritization, but that does not establish that dates or scholarship records are kept current. Look for a date on the official announcement and confirm that the deadline has not changed.
  • Country-specific equivalencies. Do not treat a GPA conversion, degree classification, or study-year interpretation as official unless the relevant scholarship authority says so.
  • Profile evidence. Review extracted fields and document quotes for errors, missing context, or mismatched dates before interpreting a result.
  • Unclear or subjective criteria. For a “Needs Verification” result—or any criterion that depends on interpretation—ask the program provider rather than inferring a pass from a related achievement.

What is not established about the application

The author’s article describes client-side document parsing and a workflow with no external API calls in its technical overview, while also describing AI-related features. Because the linked implementation was not independently inspected, those statements should not be treated as verified privacy, data-handling, or network-dependency guarantees. Review the application’s current disclosures and implementation before uploading sensitive documents.

Likewise, the article’s open-source label and sample walkthrough do not establish present repository contents, maintenance activity, the availability of a live deployment, or the size and freshness of the current scholarship catalog. The stated country list is a description in the article, not confirmation that every destination or scholarship is currently supported.
