Dead of the Brain is a Japanese horror adventure that first appeared in 1992. Its release history is divided among Japanese computers—including PC-98, MSX and FM Towns—and a PC Engine compilation containing Dead of the Brain 1 and 2. If you need English now, the MSX2 edition has documented English and Spanish IPS patches. A modern Steam edition is listed for October 30, 2026, with English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese text, but it is still unavailable as of October 13, 2026.

What kind of game is Dead of the Brain?
Dead of the Brain is a Japanese horror adventure released in 1992. The documented versions combine several traditions rather than fitting one modern genre label: point-and-click adventure interaction, visual-novel presentation and quick-time-event sequences. The planned Steam product page describes its recreation as close to the original while adding optional conveniences. That wording comes from the publisher’s listing, not from an independent comparison of every port.
The title’s release history matters because “the original” is not one universally identical build. PC-98, MSX2, FM Towns and PC Engine are separate platform contexts. The PC Engine release is especially important for newcomers because it contains both numbered games in one compilation. The available documentation does not establish which port has the best graphics, music, translation, controls or story changes, so claims that one version is definitive go beyond the evidence.

Choose the planned Steam edition if convenience matters most
Steam is the least technically demanding route once it launches. The listing names Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux, and advertises optional hover hints and hit boxes plus a scene restart after death. Those options are intended to reduce the friction of searching scenes and repeating a sequence after a fatal mistake without replacing the underlying adventure design.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There is an important timing limitation: Steam lists October 30, 2026 as the planned release date and, when checked on October 13, 2026, says the game is not yet available. Do not interpret the store page as proof that the game can already be purchased or downloaded. The date, supported languages and feature list are volatile until launch.
Choose MSX2 with a translation patch if you want an original computer version in English
The MSX Resource Center reported on July 2, 2020 that English and Spanish IPS patches had been made for the MSX2 game. The report says their text is based on the PC-98 English translation, and that the patches add some bug fixes, expand the text area to three lines of 32 characters and introduce a new font. This is the clearest documented way to approach an original-computer release in English or Spanish.
A patch is not the game itself. You need a lawful MSX2 game copy or dump and a compatible patching environment. The report does not establish exact source-image hashes, emulator configuration or a universal installation sequence, so the patch’s own readme should be treated as the authority for a particular revision.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose PC Engine if having both games on one release is the priority
Project documentation identifies a PC Engine Super CD-ROM² compilation containing Dead of the Brain 1 and 2. A translation repository describes work on English and French patches for the PC Engine versions. This route is attractive to players who want the two-game package associated with that platform, but the cited material does not establish current disc availability, the present status of every patch, or a complete hardware-and-software setup procedure.

Choose an unmodified PC-98 or FM Towns release for historical authenticity
PC-98 and FM Towns are named as earlier Japanese-computer platforms. The available sources do not provide enough port-by-port information to predict their exact graphics, sound, controls, saving behavior or compatibility. They are therefore better viewed as specialist preservation choices than as automatically superior editions.
Is Dead of the Brain available in English?
Yes, but the answer depends on the platform and whether you mean an existing patch or the planned modern edition.
- MSX2: the July 2, 2020 MSX Resource Center report documents English and Spanish IPS patches. Their text is based on the PC-98 English translation, and the report notes bug fixes, a larger text area and a new font.
- PC Engine: the translation project’s repository documents English and French patch work for the two PC Engine games. The cited project notes do not certify that every patch is a final, current release or provide a player-ready installation guide.
- Steam: the pre-release listing shows English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese interface and subtitle support. It does not show full-audio support. Because the page is dated before the planned launch, verify the language table again after release.
Do not transfer the MSX2 patch’s language claims to PC-98, FM Towns or PC Engine. A translation made for one executable or image is not automatically compatible with another platform’s files.

Does the PC Engine version include Dead of the Brain 2?
Yes. The documented PC Engine release is a compilation of Dead of the Brain 1 and 2. That fact distinguishes it from platform references that identify only a computer version of the first game. The sources do not state whether the planned Steam edition includes both numbered games, so do not assume that the modern listing reproduces the PC Engine compilation without a confirmed product description.

How do I play the original Dead of the Brain?
There is no single setup recipe because the original releases use different computers, media and translation projects. The safest approach is to identify the exact platform first, then follow documentation for that platform and software revision.
Original PC Engine route
- Identify the target release. The relevant product is the PC Engine Super CD-ROM² compilation containing both games.
- Choose hardware or an accurately configured emulator. A compatible original PC Engine Super CD-ROM² console is the hardware route; the console does not itself include the game. The available sources do not establish a universal emulator configuration.
- Obtain the game lawfully. The cited material does not establish current disc stock, pricing or a lawful digital storefront. Avoid downloading unauthorized game images.
- Check the translation project’s current documentation. The repository describes English and French patch projects, but its cited readme is not enough to certify the current release status of every patch.
- Use the project’s instructions for your exact image. Do not apply a patch intended for a different PC Engine revision, and keep an unmodified backup of any dump you are permitted to use.
- Expect original-era behavior. The modern listing’s hover hints, hit boxes and scene restart are not evidence that the original PC Engine software has those conveniences.
MSX2 route with English or Spanish text
- Confirm that your game is the MSX2 release. The documented patches target that platform; an MSX, PC-98, FM Towns or PC Engine file is not an interchangeable substitute.
- Select the language patch. The MSX Resource Center report documents English and Spanish IPS patches.
- Read the patch readme before applying it. The report does not publish universal source-image hashes, emulator settings or a complete installation sequence, so the project’s current instructions determine which revision and files are required.
- Apply the IPS patch to a lawful copy or dump. A patch normally changes an existing game image; it should not be treated as a replacement for the original software.
- Test text rendering and progression. The report specifically describes a three-line-by-32-character text area and a new font, as well as some bug fixes. If text is garbled or the program fails to boot, stop and check the image revision and patch instructions rather than repeatedly applying patches.
- Keep the original image separate. This gives you a clean recovery point if you use more than one language or patch revision.
PC-98 or FM Towns route
These platforms are named in project documentation, but the sources reviewed do not establish a complete player-facing guide for controls, disk requirements, saving, compatibility or lawful current sourcing. Use platform-specific manuals and preservation documentation for the exact model and release. Do not infer PC-98 or FM Towns procedures from the Steam edition or from MSX2 patch instructions.
What does the planned Steam edition change?
The publisher’s Steam description says the re-release underwent “many hours of painstaking QA” to function as close to the original as possible, with optional quality-of-life improvements. That is a product-page claim rather than independent verification of testing.
The listed conveniences are:
- Optional hover hints: intended to make interactive areas easier to identify.
- Optional hit boxes: intended to clarify where a click will register.
- Scene restart after death: intended to reduce repetition after a failed sequence.
The store description presents the game as a blend of point-and-click adventure, visual novel and quick-time-event elements. It does not provide a feature-by-feature comparison with PC-98, MSX2, FM Towns or PC Engine, so these options should not be described as proof that the modern edition has identical timing, art, music or controls.

|---|---|---|
| Operating systems | Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux | These are the listed targets; final compatibility should be checked after release. |
| Interface and subtitles | English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese | Announced listing languages, not a guarantee of unchanged post-launch support. |
| Full audio | No full-audio checkmark shown | The table does not establish that voice audio is absent in every scene; it only lacks the listed checkmark. |
| Planned release | October 30, 2026 | On October 13, 2026, Steam marked the product unavailable. |

Content warning and suitability
Steam describes violence and death, crude language and mild sexual references, and recommends the game for mature audiences. PC Gamer’s October 7, 2026 coverage uses the stronger characterization “sexual violence” when discussing the series. That description should be attributed to the article rather than presented as a separate rating issued by Steam.
Players who need to avoid sexual violence, graphic death or coarse language should review the current store warning and independent content advisories before starting. The cited sources do not provide a scene-by-scene breakdown, so a general warning cannot identify every trigger or sequence.

Assuming the Steam page means the game is already playable
The listing’s planned date is October 30, 2026, and its status on October 13, 2026 was “not yet available.” Treat the page as an announcement until the release occurs.
Assuming every translation works on every platform
The MSX2 patches, PC-98-based text and PC Engine project are separate pieces of work. Match a patch to the platform and exact image revision identified by its readme.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Confusing a patch with a game release
IPS files modify software you already possess; they do not establish that the underlying game image is supplied or legally redistributable. Use authorized copies and follow the project’s licensing and distribution terms.
Expecting modern quality-of-life features on original hardware
Hover hints, hit boxes and scene restart are listed for the planned re-release. The sources do not state that PC-98, MSX2, FM Towns or PC Engine versions include them.
Calling one port definitive without comparative evidence
The available documentation confirms platforms and some language projects, but not a complete audiovisual, control or story comparison. A preference for one version can be personal; it should not be presented as an established technical verdict.

A practical decision checklist
- I want the simplest supported computer route: wait for the Steam release, then confirm the live date, requirements and language table.
- I want English before the Steam launch: investigate the documented MSX2 English patch and follow its current readme.
- I want Spanish on an original-computer release: the documented MSX2 Spanish patch is the relevant option.
- I want both numbered games together: the PC Engine Super CD-ROM² compilation is the version explicitly documented as including 1 and 2.
- I want a Japanese-computer preservation project: PC-98, MSX2 and FM Towns are the named platforms, but plan to do platform-specific compatibility research.
- I need modern navigation aids: only the planned Steam listing explicitly advertises optional hover hints, hit boxes and scene restart.
What remains unknown
Several details that would be needed for a definitive technical buying guide are not established by the cited sources: exact version chronology, port-by-port audiovisual changes, control mappings, disk or disc requirements, save procedures, emulator settings, source-image hashes, current physical-media availability and the final behavior of the Steam edition after launch. Those gaps are reasons to qualify a recommendation, not invitations to fill in specifications from memory.
For the same reason, the safest original-hardware advice is to identify the platform, obtain software through lawful means, read the documentation for the exact revision and preserve an unmodified backup. A future post-launch Steam check may also change the answer about availability, requirements or language support.
