Assist Mode makes Dead Cells adjustable without turning it into a separate easy difficulty. Open Options > Assist mode, then change only the barrier that is stopping you: add limited continues, slow traps, widen parry timing, automate nearby melee attacks, reveal the map, or reduce trap, enemy-health, and enemy-damage values. These options do not disable achievements, Boss Stem Cell acquisition, or perfect-kill rewards, although Daily Challenge leaderboard scores are hidden while Assist Mode is active.

What Assist Mode is and why it matters

Assist Mode was added in the Update 29: Breaking Barriers update on April 12, 2022. It is a collection of independent accessibility and difficulty controls, not a single global easy setting. You can keep the normal combat rules and change only retries, timing, input demands, navigation, hazards, or damage values.

Motion Twin and Evil Empire described the goal in the 2022 Breaking Barriers announcement as making the game’s “tough but fair” design accessible through “tailored, specific adjustments.” That distinction matters: the game still uses its normal biomes, weapons, routes, Boss Stem Cell progression, and rewards unless a particular Assist Mode control changes one of those interactions.

How to turn on Assist Mode

  1. Pause the game and open Options.
  2. Select Assist mode.
  3. Enable or adjust the individual controls you need.
  4. Return to the run and test one change at a time so you can tell which setting solved the problem.

The settings can be changed from the same menu rather than by starting a special save or selecting a separate difficulty. If you want the original challenge back, return to this menu and disable the relevant option or restore its value.

Every Assist Mode setting explained

Setting What it changes Useful when
Continue Mode Lets you resurrect from the latest save after dying. Choices are 0, 1, 3, 7, or infinite continues. A single mistake late in a biome is costing an otherwise good run.
Auto-Hit Mode Automatically attacks nearby enemies with your primary melee weapon. Repeated melee input or maintaining attack rhythm is difficult.
Destroy doors in Auto-Hit Mode Allows Auto-Hit to attack doors as well as enemies. You want door breaking to be covered by the same automated input.
Easier Parry Provides more time to trigger a parry. Enemy attacks are readable, but the reaction window is too short.
Slower traps Reduces the speed of moving traps. Moving hazards or timing-heavy platforming are the main danger.
Reveal the map Reveals the map for the current level. You are losing runs because you cannot learn the route or locate exits.
Trap damage Reduces trap damage in 20% increments, down to 20% of normal damage. Hazards, Challenge Rifts, or platforming—not enemies—are killing you.
Enemy health Reduces enemy health in 2.5% increments, down to 20% of normal health. Fights last too long or sustained attacks are difficult.
Enemy damage Reduces enemy damage in 2.5% increments, down to 20% of normal damage. You want normal enemy durability and pacing but more forgiveness for mistakes.

Continue Mode: extra lives without restarting the run

With Continue Mode enabled, a death can return you to the latest save instead of forcing a complete run restart. The developers summarized the feature as: “Continue mode – each time you die you can resurrect from the beginning of the biome.” In practice, the available save points include biome entrances and exits, Boss Stem Cell doors, lore rooms, sub-biomes, and the moment you quit.

You choose 0, 1, 3, or 7 continues, or enable infinite continues. A value of 0 leaves the usual one-life structure intact; a positive number gives you that many resurrection opportunities. Infinite continues remove the run-ending pressure from death, but they do not automatically heal you, improve your build, or skip the biome you are in. You still have to fight or traverse from the applicable save point.

Start with one continue if a late-biome error is the problem. Three or seven are better for learning a difficult route over several attempts. Infinite continues are most useful when you are practicing bosses, unfamiliar biomes, or accessibility-limited inputs and do not want repetition of earlier sections to consume your energy.

Combat and input adjustments

Auto-Hit Mode

Auto-Hit automatically attacks nearby enemies with the primary melee weapon. It reduces the need for repeated attack presses and can make close-range combat manageable when sustained input, hand fatigue, or motor precision is the limiting factor. It does not replace movement, dodging, weapon selection, positioning, or the rest of your build decisions.

Destroy doors in Auto-Hit Mode

This separate option extends Auto-Hit behavior to doors. Enable it only if you want the automated attack to break doors as well as target enemies; leaving it off keeps door interaction manual while Auto-Hit handles combat.

Easier Parry

Easier Parry gives you more time to trigger a parry. Use it before reducing enemy health when your main issue is execution timing rather than the length of a fight. You still need to recognize an attack and attempt the parry; the option widens the timing window instead of making every hit successful automatically.

Traps, Challenge Rifts, and navigation

Slower traps

Slower traps reduce the speed of moving hazards, giving you more time to read their cycle and pass. This is the targeted choice when the obstacle is timing. It preserves enemy health and damage, so combat remains closer to the standard experience.

Trap damage

Trap damage can be lowered in 20% steps until traps deal 20% of their normal damage. Because the setting changes the consequence of a mistake rather than the movement pattern, it is useful when you can see the hazard but occasional contact is unavoidable. It also applies to trap-heavy routes and Challenge Rifts, where a single collision can otherwise end a run.

Reveal the map

Reveal the map shows the current level map. It is a navigation aid, not a combat modifier. Turn it on while learning exits, branching routes, lore rooms, or sub-biomes, then disable it after the layout becomes familiar if you want exploration to return to normal.

Reducing enemy health or enemy damage

Enemy health and enemy damage are independent sliders. Each moves in 2.5% increments and can be reduced as far as 20% of the normal value.

  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Lower enemy damage when you like the ordinary length and rhythm of fights but need more tolerance for missed dodges or contact damage. Enemies still take their normal amount of punishment, so weapon choices and combat pacing remain comparatively familiar.
  • Lower enemy health when fights are too long, repeated attacks are tiring, or sustained concentration is the barrier. Enemies go down sooner, while their attacks remain dangerous at the selected damage value.
  • Lower both when combat itself is inaccessible and you need shorter encounters plus a larger margin for mistakes.

Make small changes first. A reduction that solves one troublesome biome may be preferable to setting every enemy to the minimum, especially if you want to keep learning attack patterns and positioning.

Does Assist Mode disable achievements or Boss Cells?

No. Assist Mode does not disable achievements, Boss Stem Cell acquisition, or perfect-kill rewards. You can therefore keep the Boss Stem Cell level you are working on and use a targeted assist without forfeiting those progression outcomes.

The exception is competitive Daily Challenge scoring: Assist Mode hides Daily Challenge leaderboard scores. This affects leaderboard visibility, not the ordinary achievement and Boss Stem Cell progression described above.

Assist Mode, Boss Stem Cells, and Custom Mode are different systems

Boss Stem Cells are Dead Cells’ established escalation path. They raise the challenge through the game’s normal progression structure. Assist Mode is granular: it changes selected inputs, hazards, retries, navigation, or combat values while leaving other systems intact.

Custom Mode is separate again. It is a loadout and balancing system for selecting equipment and run rules; it should not be treated as another name for Assist Mode. A practical approach is to keep the Boss Stem Cell level you want, enable one Assist Mode control that addresses your barrier, and remove that control as the underlying skill improves.

Choosing the right setting for the problem

If your main problem is… Start with… Why this is the least disruptive option
One death late in a biome 1 or 3 Continue lives You gain recovery attempts without changing enemy behavior.
Platforming or Challenge Rift hazards Slower traps, then lower trap damage The first changes timing; the second reduces the penalty for contact.
Parry reaction time Easier Parry It targets execution timing instead of shortening fights.
Repeated melee input Auto-Hit Mode It reduces attack-input load while leaving movement and decisions to you.
Getting lost Reveal the map It solves route learning without changing combat.
Taking too much damage Lower enemy damage Normal enemy durability and pacing are preserved.
Fights lasting too long Lower enemy health Encounters end sooner while you can retain the selected damage level.

Practical presets you can adjust

Learning a new biome

Use Reveal the map and one or three continues. Keep enemy health, enemy damage, and trap values unchanged while you learn enemy placements, exits, lore rooms, and sub-biomes. Remove the map aid once navigation is no longer the source of deaths.

Reaction-time support

Enable Easier Parry first. If moving hazards are also a problem, add Slower traps. Only lower enemy damage or health if the timing change does not address the actual failures.

Input-limited melee play

Turn on Auto-Hit Mode and, if desired, Destroy doors in Auto-Hit Mode. Keep a small number of continues available while you learn how the automated attacks interact with your movement and positioning.

Hazard-focused accessibility

Use Slower traps for predictable moving patterns. If collisions still cause excessive losses, reduce Trap damage in the smallest useful 20% step. Enemy settings can remain at normal values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Boss practice

Choose enough Continue Mode lives to repeat attempts from the relevant save point. Add Easier Parry if parry timing is the specific skill you are practicing; do not lower enemy health merely to compensate for a timing problem unless shorter attempts are your goal.

Scaling Assist Mode back over time

  1. Write down which control solved the original barrier.
  2. Reduce only that control, such as moving trap damage one step toward normal or dropping from three continues to one.
  3. Play several runs at the new value rather than changing multiple settings together.
  4. If the same failure returns, restore the previous value and try a smaller change elsewhere.

This approach keeps the game’s feedback useful. For example, removing map reveal while leaving enemy values alone tells you whether route knowledge—not combat strength—was the missing skill.

Common points of confusion

“Is this an easy difficulty?”

Not exactly. There is no single Assist Mode difficulty level. You select separate controls, so two players can use very different combinations while keeping the same Boss Stem Cell level.

“Will I lose my Boss Stem Cell or achievement progress?”

No. The listed progression and reward systems remain available with Assist Mode active. Daily Challenge leaderboard scores are the specific feature that is hidden.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Can I make only traps weaker?”

Yes. Trap damage and Slower traps are independent of enemy health and enemy damage. Use one or both without altering combat values.

“Can I keep enemy health normal but take less damage?”

Yes. Lower Enemy damage while leaving Enemy health at its normal value.

“Why did my run resume somewhere unexpected?”

Continue Mode uses the latest save, which can be tied to a biome entrance or exit, a Boss Stem Cell door, a lore room, a sub-biome, or quitting the game. The resurrection point is therefore not necessarily the exact location where you died.
