The best Dead by Daylight loadout is not four individually popular perks. It is four perks that perform one clear job, cover the way that plan can fail, and match your character’s power, role and team situation. Survivors normally combine an objective or chase plan with information, protection and flexibility. Killers should start with what their power already does well, then add reliable information, pressure and a way to recover when a chase or hook plan breaks down.
What perks and loadouts do in Dead by Daylight
A perk is an equipable gameplay ability. Survivors and Killers use different perk pools, and a loadout is the complete set of perks, items, add-ons, offerings and other pre-trial choices selected for one match. You have four perk slots, so every slot has an opportunity cost: equipping one effect means giving up another source of information, pressure, protection or speed.
Think of a loadout as a plan rather than a shopping list. A build that increases generator speed but gives you no way to find objectives, escape a chase or recover from a failed rescue may look strong on paper and still lose consistently. The same is true for a Killer who equips four slowdown effects but has no dependable way to find Survivors or turn a down into a hook.

How to unlock perks for other characters
Teachable perks were removed from the Bloodweb. Character prestige now controls the account-wide tier unlocks for that character’s perks:
| Character prestige | What other characters receive |
|---|---|
| Prestige 1 | That character’s perks become available for all other characters at Tier 1. |
| Prestige 2 | The same perks become available for all other characters at Tier 2. |
| Prestige 3 | The same perks become available for all other characters at Tier 3. |
This system means you do not need to hunt for a separate teachable node. If you want a particular character’s perks at their strongest tier on another Survivor or Killer, prestige the original character through Prestige 3. Access to a character itself can depend on the live game’s licensed-character and store availability, so confirm that separately from perk progression.
What changed in the current loadout interface
Behaviour Interactive’s 2025 quality-of-life initiative added extra perk-loadout slots after A/B testing and allowed players to see their own perk loadouts in the lobby. Update 9.1.0 lists seven available Loadout and Cosmetic presets. Use those presets to save distinct plans instead of replacing the same four slots every match—for example, an information build, a rescue build and a solo-queue safety build.
When you are in a lobby, verify that the selected preset is the one you intend to take into the trial. A saved preset is a convenience, not a guarantee that its assumptions fit the next map, team composition or Killer. Read the current perk tooltips before relying on an interaction that a recent patch may have changed.
How to build a Survivor loadout
Start with one primary job. The useful Survivor jobs are information, chase extension, objective speed, rescue, healing, stealth and endgame. Four unrelated “strong” perks usually produce less value than a focused plan with one safety valve.

- Choose the primary job. Decide what you want to do during most of the trial: locate generators, finish objectives, extend the first chase, rescue safely, keep teammates healthy, avoid detection or convert the endgame.
- Add a trigger that starts or maintains that job. Select an effect that activates when you begin the relevant action or when the Killer creates the condition your plan expects. A chase build needs a way to gain value during a chase; an information build needs a repeatable information trigger.
- Cover the main failure state. Ask what stops the plan. If your objective perk does nothing while you are being chased, add information, protection or a way to regain tempo. If your rescue plan depends on reaching a hook safely, add a tool that helps you identify danger or survive the approach.
- Use the fourth slot for flexibility. This can be team support, a counter to the map or Killer, a recovery tool, or an endgame effect. Do not spend the last slot on a duplicate bonus simply because its description sounds powerful.
- Check the assumptions. Note whether the build needs teammates to cooperate, a particular map layout, a healthy state, an available item or a specific Killer action. Solo queue requires more self-contained value than a coordinated group.
Information-focused Survivor builds
Information reduces wasted movement. Combine a way to identify objectives or teammates with a way to detect danger before committing to a repair, rescue or rotation. The trade-off is that information may not directly extend a chase or accelerate a generator, so reserve one slot for an effect that converts knowledge into time saved.
- Best when: you lose time searching, play solo queue or need to make safer rotations.
- Weakness: information has little value if you do not act on it; it also does not automatically win a chase.
- Pairing principle: match information with objective speed, stealth or a protection effect so the revealed location changes your outcome.
Chase and survivability builds
A chase build should help you reach a resource, create distance, or recover after the Killer closes distance. Survivability effects can buy time, but they are not a substitute for pathing and awareness. Consider how the build performs on a map with few safe structures, not only on a favorable tile layout.
- Best when: you are the team’s frequent chase target or need to protect a critical generator rotation.
- Weakness: chase perks can provide little value while repairing, healing or hiding.
- Pairing principle: add information that tells you when the Killer is approaching and one flexible effect for recovery or team value.
Objective-speed builds
Objective speed is valuable only while you can stay on an objective. Build around uptime: information to choose a safe generator, stealth or protection to avoid an early interruption, and a fallback for when the Killer commits to you. A four-perk stack of similar speed modifiers is less attractive under current diminishing-returns rules.
- Best when: your team needs reliable generator progress and you can avoid repeatedly abandoning work.
- Weakness: the build may collapse when the Killer applies early chase pressure or when teammates do not split objectives.
- Pairing principle: combine one primary speed effect with information and a way to preserve progress during pressure.
Rescue and healing builds
Rescue-focused players should plan the entire sequence: locate the hook, approach without wasting time, perform the rescue, and survive the Killer’s response. Healing support is strongest when it reduces repeated trips to the same area and keeps teammates available for objectives. Decide whether your build is for safe rescues, fast recovery or both; four support effects can leave you unable to protect yourself.
- Best when: teammates are frequently hooked or your group lacks dependable support.
- Weakness: support value falls when no one is injured, hooked or willing to coordinate.
- Pairing principle: include information or self-protection so the rescue does not become a second down.
Stealth and endgame builds
Stealth builds trade immediate speed for fewer chase starts. They need information about the Killer’s proximity and a clear rule for when to leave an objective rather than waiting too long. Endgame builds should account for the whole match: they are most reliable when your earlier perks help you reach the final generators and keep at least one teammate alive.

How to build a Killer loadout
Begin with the Killer’s power, not with a generic tier list. Identify the power’s reliable advantage and its blind spot, then choose perks that turn the advantage into hooks or compensate for the blind spot.
- Describe the power in one sentence. For example, decide whether it mainly creates mobility, information, chase control, damage, stealth or area denial. This prevents you from paying four perk slots for an ability the power already supplies.
- Choose a pressure plan. Your main plan may be tracking, chase control, generator slowdown, hooking, snowballing or endgame conversion.
- Add reliable information. A strong effect that activates only after a rare event cannot replace a repeatable way to locate Survivors. Favor information that lets you start the next chase quickly or choose the correct target.
- Convert the power into pressure. Select effects that reward the actions your power performs naturally, such as finding, injuring, downing or relocating Survivors.
- Cover one or two blind spots. Add map-wide tracking, recovery after a failed chase, protection against lost generator time or a way to maintain pressure after a hook.
- Test the dependency. Note whether the build requires a particular map, Survivor mistake, hook sequence or power add-on. If one failed chase makes all four perks irrelevant, replace one with a more reliable tool.
Tracking and first-chase builds
These builds are judged by time to first chase and information uptime. They are useful for powers that are dangerous once contact is made but spend too long searching. Avoid adding several effects that reveal the same kind of information at the same moment; staggered, repeatable information usually gives better coverage.
Chase-control builds
Chase-control builds help you convert a sighting into an injury or down. They are strongest when the Killer’s power already shortens a chase and the perks prevent Survivors from resetting safely. Their risk is map dependence: a build that excels around one structure may lose value when the trial offers long sightlines or weak power access.
Generator-pressure builds
Generator slowdown can buy time, but it does not create pressure by itself. You still need to find Survivors and reach the generator before they repair it again. Behaviour Interactive’s 2022 perk-overhaul discussion reported that Killers favored generator-regression perks in its qualitative analysis of internal data and community feedback; that observation describes a preference, not a current win-rate ranking.
Hook, snowball and endgame builds
Hook-focused builds reward a repeatable hook cycle: locate a target, secure the down, reach a hook and find the next target. Snowball builds become stronger when several Survivors are injured, downed or forced into a rescue decision, but they can be slow to start. Endgame builds should include a plan for the final objectives and gate pressure rather than assuming the match will reach the endgame in a winning state.

How to judge whether two perks work well together
Perk synergy is more than two effects sharing a keyword. Evaluate the complete trigger chain:
| Question | What a good answer looks like | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Do the triggers overlap? | The first perk creates the condition that reliably activates the second. | Both perks require a rare event, so neither activates in ordinary trials. |
| Do the effects cover different moments? | One helps you start the plan and another protects the recovery or finish. | Both provide the same bonus during the same short window. |
| Who must cooperate? | The build still provides value when teammates ignore it. | Its entire purpose disappears if another player does not follow your plan. |
| What ends the chain? | You know what to do after a missed skill check, failed chase, hook or interrupted repair. | A single interruption makes every equipped effect inactive. |
| Does stacking retain full value? | You use one strong modifier and spend other slots on coverage. | Four near-identical modifiers assume fully additive bonuses. |
Diminishing returns and why variety matters
Update 9.6.0 applies diminishing returns when identical modifiers from powers, items, perks and offerings stack. The practical consequence is not that stacking is always bad; it is that a build should no longer assume four copies of the same type of bonus retain full additive value. When comparing two options, consider whether a second modifier gives its advertised value or only a reduced increment.
This rule favors complementary loadouts. A Survivor can use one objective modifier, one information tool, one protection or chase tool and one flexible slot. A Killer can combine information, chase conversion, generator pressure and recovery rather than filling every slot with the same slowdown category. Read the current tooltip and patch notes when a build depends on exact stacking behavior.

| Role | Slot 1 | Slot 2 | Slot 3 | Slot 4 | Main trade-off |

| Solo Survivor | Primary objective or chase job | Repeatable information | Self-protection or recovery | Flexible counter to the map or Killer | Less specialized team support, more independence |
| Coordinated Survivor | Team objective plan | Rescue or healing support | Information shared with teammates | Chase or endgame insurance | Higher ceiling, but depends on communication |
| Pressure Killer | Reliable tracking | Power-to-chase conversion | Generator pressure | Recovery or snowball tool | Broad coverage instead of maximum slowdown |
| Endgame Killer | Early information | Hook or chase conversion | Endgame pressure | Flexible answer to the map | Some perks may be weaker before the final phase |

Choosing four perks from a tier list
A tier list cannot know your role, power, map, teammates or skill level. Fix this by writing the build’s primary job in one sentence and removing any perk that does not help that sentence, its failure state or its flexibility slot.

Ignoring activation conditions
Read when a perk activates, how long it lasts, what ends it and whether it has a cooldown or usage limit. If you cannot describe the trigger before the trial starts, the slot is not yet understood.
Overbuilding for a perfect match
Some effects require a specific map event, hook order, injured state or Survivor mistake. Keep one or two reliable perks that work in ordinary play so the build does not collapse when the ideal sequence never appears.
Assuming old descriptions and stacking rules
Update 9.5.0 changed the wording and tooltip presentation for all Survivor and Killer perks, and Update 9.6.0 changed how identical modifiers stack. Recheck the in-game text after a patch instead of relying on an old video, screenshot or remembered interaction.

What “best Survivor perks” and “best Killer perks” really means
There is no universal best four-perk list established by the official material available for this version. Behaviour Interactive’s 2022 overhaul article described an intentional attempt to shake up the game and discussed nearly 40 perks in the planned scope, while noting that the exact number was still to be confirmed. It also reported qualitative preferences: Survivors often favored “second chance” perks, while Killers often favored generator-regression perks. Those findings are useful context, not a current complete pick-rate or win-rate table.
Use a decision rule instead of a permanent ranking. Pick the effect that most improves your chosen job, then select the effect that prevents that job’s most common failure. Spend the remaining slots on information, protection or flexibility, and revisit the choices when a patch changes a trigger, value or stacking rule.
A pre-match checklist
- Can you state the build’s primary job in one sentence?
- Does at least one perk help you start that job reliably?
- What happens when the Killer finds you, a chase fails, a teammate refuses to cooperate or an objective is interrupted?
- Are any two effects redundant or subject to diminishing returns when stacked?
- Does the build depend on a particular map, item, add-on, hook order or Survivor mistake?
- Will it still provide value in solo queue or without voice communication?
- Have you checked the current expanding tooltip and status-effect label?
- Is the intended preset selected in the lobby?
