Short answer: keep DDR4 when you already have a sound DDR4 motherboard and processor, or when a DDR4 LGA1700/AM4 system meets your needs. Choose DDR5 for a new AM5 or LGA1851 computer, for high-refresh gaming and memory-sensitive creative work, or when you want a longer upgrade path. DDR4 and DDR5 cannot be installed in the same motherboard, so the motherboard and CPU determine the decision before price or speed does.
Start with compatibility, not the memory kit
DDR4 and DDR5 are separate memory standards with different electrical specifications, signaling characteristics and physical keying. A DDR4 motherboard accepts DDR4 modules; a DDR5 motherboard accepts DDR5 modules. The notch is positioned differently, and the electrical requirements are not interchangeable. Trying to force a module into the wrong slot can damage hardware, and an adapter cannot turn a DDR4 board into a DDR5 platform.
Moving from DDR4 to DDR5 normally means replacing the motherboard and using a processor platform that supports DDR5. That platform cost often matters more than the price difference between two memory kits.
| Platform | Supported memory | What an upgrade means |
|---|---|---|
| AMD AM4 | DDR4 | Use DDR4; moving to DDR5 requires a motherboard and processor change to an AM5-class platform. |
| AMD AM5 | DDR5 | DDR5 is required; DDR4 is not an option. |
| Intel LGA1700 | DDR4 or DDR5, depending on the board | 12th-, 13th- and 14th-generation Core processors can work with either standard, but each motherboard is a dedicated DDR4 or DDR5 model. |
| Intel LGA1851 | DDR5 | DDR5 is required; a DDR4 board or kit cannot be reused. |
LGA1700 is the confusing case. The processor family does not by itself tell you which memory to buy: a board built for DDR4 and a board built for DDR5 may use the same socket. Read the exact motherboard model and manual before ordering.

What “better value” means in practice
Value is the performance you gain for the money you spend on the complete platform, not the cheapest pair of modules. Include the memory, motherboard, processor, any cooler or replacement parts, and the value of hardware you already own.
- Existing DDR4 desktop: a matched DDR4 upgrade usually delivers the most useful capacity per dollar because it avoids a platform replacement.
- New DDR5-only desktop: DDR5 is mandatory, so the comparison is about choosing an appropriate kit rather than deciding between standards.
- New LGA1700 budget build: price both complete DDR4 and DDR5 configurations. DDR4 can lower the initial bill; DDR5 can provide more performance and a newer memory path.
- High-refresh gaming or demanding media work: DDR5 is easier to justify when the CPU is fast enough and the total premium fits the budget.
- Office, browsing and streaming: enough capacity and stable dual-channel operation generally matter more than generation.
Kingston’s technical guidance puts the choice this way: “DDR4 and DDR5 each offer distinct advantages, and the right choice ultimately depends on your platform requirements, performance goals, and upgrade plans.”
Gaming performance: DDR5 leads, but the size of the lead depends on the system
The clearest published comparison in the supplied evidence is Tom’s Hardware’s 15-game test, published July 28, 2026. It used Intel LGA1700 processors, identical software conditions, an RTX 5090 and 1080p resolution to expose CPU and memory differences.
| Tested processor | Measured DDR4 result versus DDR5 |
|---|---|
| Core i7-12700K | DDR4 was 9.3% slower |
| Core i9-14900K | DDR4 was 14% slower |
| Other listed Core i5, i7 and i9 processors | The deficit fell within the reported 9.3%–14% range |
Across the tested CPUs, the article summarized the average gaming difference as roughly an 11%–14% loss with DDR4. Some individual games exceeded 20%. Those figures describe that LGA1700 test setup, not a guaranteed result for every processor, graphics card or game.
When the measured gap is visible
A fast graphics card at 1080p and a high-refresh monitor can make CPU and memory limits easier to see. Competitive games with high frame rates may benefit more than a visually demanding title that already limits performance at the GPU. The test deliberately used powerful graphics hardware for that reason.
When the gap is smaller
If your graphics card is the limiting component, raising memory bandwidth will not produce the same percentage change. Older games, higher resolutions and applications that do little memory-intensive work can also show a smaller difference. The Tom’s Hardware numbers should therefore guide a platform decision, not serve as a universal promise.

Everyday workloads: capacity often beats generation
For web browsing, office applications and basic streaming, Kingston reports that the generation difference is less noticeable. In these workloads, running out of memory causes more disruption than using a slightly older standard.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Use case | Practical priority | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Browsing with many tabs | Capacity first | Additional memory prevents tab eviction and slowdowns as workloads grow. |
| Office and school work | Reliable dual-channel kit and sufficient capacity | DDR4 and DDR5 both handle ordinary productivity; an undersized DDR5 system is not an upgrade in practice. |
| Streaming and video playback | Capacity and platform compatibility | The memory generation is usually less important than having enough available RAM. |
| Gaming plus background applications | Capacity, then latency and bandwidth | Adequate headroom keeps the game and other programs responsive. |
Sixteen gigabytes remains a reasonable baseline for a basic system, while 32GB gives more room for modern games, multitasking and creative applications. Choose the larger capacity your budget allows rather than buying a smaller DDR5 kit solely for its label.
Speed, latency and capacity: compare like with like
DDR5 kits are commonly sold with higher rated transfer speeds than DDR4 kits, but a speed number alone does not establish real-world value. Compare matched capacities, the same number of modules, channel configuration, timings and the processor’s supported memory speeds.
- Capacity: compare 16GB with 16GB or 32GB with 32GB. A larger DDR4 kit can be more useful than a smaller DDR5 kit.
- Channel count: a two-module matched kit normally provides the intended dual-channel configuration on mainstream desktop boards. Do not compare a single module with a two-module kit.
- Rated speed: the CPU and motherboard impose limits. A faster-rated kit can operate at a lower supported speed if the platform requires it.
- Latency: timings and transfer rate work together; quoting only one does not predict every application result.
- Stability: a speed that runs reliably is more valuable than an extreme rating that needs troubleshooting or cannot be sustained.
For a normal desktop upgrade, capacity and stable dual-channel operation usually deliver more dependable benefits than chasing the highest advertised speed.
Power and platform requirements
DDR4 and DDR5 use different electrical and signaling designs, so power behavior is part of the platform decision rather than a simple module-by-module specification. Actual system consumption depends on the processor, motherboard, memory configuration and workload. The evidence does not establish one universal whole-system power saving for DDR5, so do not buy it solely on an assumed electricity reduction.

Total cost: the kit price is only one line item
Tom’s Hardware reported that, at the time of its 2026 comparison, a 32GB DDR5-6000 kit cost more than twice as much as a comparable 32GB DDR4-3200 kit. That is a dated comparison, not a current worldwide price list; memory prices and availability change by region and month.
| Cost situation | Likely value choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You already own a compatible DDR4 board and CPU | DDR4 | You pay for memory rather than replacing a functioning platform. |
| You are buying an AM5 or LGA1851 system | DDR5 | The platform requires it, so a DDR4 price advantage is irrelevant. |
| You are choosing between new LGA1700 boards | Whichever complete build costs less for your target performance | Both standards are available, but board pricing, CPU choice and upgrade plans can outweigh the kit difference. |
| You need 32GB for a workstation or gaming build | Compare matched 32GB kits and the board premium | The reported more-than-two-times kit difference can disappear or widen as the market changes. |
Do not treat the historical DDR5-6000 versus DDR4-3200 comparison as a quotation. Before buying, check current prices for the same capacity, module count and speed class in your region, then add motherboard and processor costs.
Future CPU upgrades and useful life
DDR5 offers the stronger forward path because newer mainstream desktop platforms such as AM5 and LGA1851 require it. A DDR5 board can therefore make a later CPU upgrade easier within its supported socket and firmware life, although no socket remains upgradeable forever.
DDR4 maximizes the value of hardware you already own. If your AM4 or DDR4 LGA1700 processor performs adequately, replacing the platform just to obtain DDR5 can divert money from a graphics card, storage or a faster CPU that would produce a larger improvement.
For a new LGA1700 computer, decide how long you expect to keep the board. A low-cost DDR4 configuration may be sensible for a short-term or tightly budgeted build. Paying for DDR5 can make more sense if you plan to keep the board through multiple upgrades and value the memory bandwidth demonstrated in demanding games.
How to choose the right kit, step by step
- Identify the exact motherboard model. Read the model name printed on the board or shown in firmware or the operating system. Similar product names can have separate DDR4 and DDR5 versions.
- Open the manual or the manufacturer’s memory configurator. Confirm whether the board accepts DDR4 or DDR5, the number of slots, maximum supported capacity and validated module types.
- Confirm the processor platform. Check whether the system is AM4, AM5, LGA1700 or LGA1851, and review the CPU’s supported memory speeds.
- Set a capacity target. Use 16GB as a basic baseline and 32GB when gaming, multitasking or creative applications justify the extra headroom.
- Buy a matched kit. Prefer one factory-matched 2×8GB or 2×16GB kit over mixing unrelated modules. Match capacity, channel count and the intended speed profile.
- Check physical clearance. Tall heat spreaders can interfere with some CPU coolers, and all modules must fit the board’s slot layout.
- Install in the manual’s recommended slots. On a typical four-slot board, the manual identifies the pair that enables dual-channel operation; do not guess if the labels are unclear.
- Test at default settings first. Confirm that the computer boots and recognizes the full capacity. If a rated profile is enabled, verify stability before relying on it for important work.
Recommended configurations by situation
Upgrading an existing AM4 or DDR4 LGA1700 PC
Stay with DDR4 unless you also need a new motherboard and processor. A 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3200 desktop RAM kit is a sensible comparison point for a system that currently has 16GB and whose board supports that capacity. Confirm the exact board, use a matched kit and check the CPU’s supported speed before ordering. Replacing only one old module with a mismatched stick can prevent the intended dual-channel operation or create stability problems.

Building AM5 or LGA1851 from scratch
Choose DDR5 because those platforms require it. A 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-6000 desktop RAM kit is a useful buying reference for a mainstream performance build, but the speed is not a universal guarantee: verify motherboard support, processor limits and the kit’s compatibility list immediately beside the product choice. If your applications need more memory, prioritize a larger validated capacity over a faster but smaller kit.

Price two complete parts lists rather than comparing modules in isolation. DDR4 may reduce the initial purchase, while DDR5 can improve performance in memory-sensitive games and leave you with a newer memory standard. The right answer depends on the board premium, the selected CPU, your graphics card and how long you intend to keep the machine.
High-refresh gaming
Favor DDR5 when the CPU and graphics card are capable of high frame rates and the platform premium is acceptable. The 2026 LGA1700 test found an average DDR4 deficit of about 11%–14%, with some titles above 20%, under a deliberately CPU- and memory-sensitive 1080p setup. GPU-limited play may show less benefit.
Office, browsing and streaming
Buy enough reliable memory first. If a compatible DDR4 system already meets your needs, adding capacity is generally better value than changing the entire platform for DDR5.

Mixing kits to reach a target capacity
Different kits can use different chips and timings. If the system becomes unstable, remove the mixed modules and install one matched kit. For a planned 32GB configuration, a factory-matched 2×16GB kit is preferable to combining two unrelated 2×8GB kits.
Choosing speed before capacity
If applications routinely consume available memory, a higher speed rating will not fix paging or tab eviction. Move to 32GB or more when your workload requires it, then choose a supported speed.
Assuming a benchmark applies to every workload
The cited gaming result used LGA1700 processors, an RTX 5090 and 1080p. Treat it as evidence of potential gaming scaling, not a promise for an AM5 system, a different GPU or office software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIgnoring firmware and validation
If a new kit fails to boot, return to default memory settings, confirm both modules are fully seated in the recommended slots, update the motherboard firmware when the manufacturer provides a relevant release, and retest one matched pair. Persistent errors indicate a compatibility or hardware problem that should be resolved before enabling a higher speed profile.
A compact decision checklist
- Is the motherboard DDR4 or DDR5? The answer is mandatory, not optional.
- Is the platform AM4, AM5, LGA1700 or LGA1851?
- Are you reusing a working board and CPU? If yes, DDR4 may deliver the lowest total cost.
- Do you need 16GB, 32GB or more for the applications you actually run?
- Are you comparing equal capacities, module counts, channel configurations and speed profiles?
- Will the CPU and motherboard support the kit’s rated speed reliably?
- Is your workload sensitive enough to memory bandwidth to justify the platform premium?
- How long will you keep the motherboard, and does a DDR5 platform fit your upgrade plan?
Verdict
DDR4 is still the better value when it lets you extend an adequate computer without replacing the platform. It remains good enough for ordinary gaming, productivity and streaming when paired with sufficient capacity, and it can be especially attractive for AM4 and budget LGA1700 systems.
DDR5 is the better choice for a new AM5 or LGA1851 build, for a performance-focused LGA1700 configuration, and for buyers who value the newer platform’s forward path. The deciding calculation is the complete system cost and your workload—not the generation label on the box.
