Choose based on the campaign your group wants to play: D&D is the fit for fantasy adventures using fifth-edition rules, while a Star Wars roleplaying game is the fit when you want the story set in that galaxy. The Star Wars line offers three campaign perspectives—Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny—whose core mechanics are described as interchangeable.
Start with the campaign premise
Choose D&D for fantasy roleplaying
D&D’s central appeal here is its fantasy setting and fifth-edition rules. It makes sense if your group already has a D&D campaign in mind or wants to build one around that style of fantasy adventure.
Choose Star Wars for a campaign in that galaxy
The Star Wars roleplaying game is the direct choice when the setting is the priority. Its three lines frame campaigns around different perspectives: Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny. The publisher describes their core mechanics as fully interchangeable, so the choice is about campaign focus rather than a documented difference in core rules.

If your group already plays D&D
Switching between 2014 and updated fifth-edition material does not necessarily require abandoning an existing D&D campaign. D&D Beyond’s support article, updated March 2, 2026, says its 5e and 5.5e content remains supported and can be used together for campaigns and character creation on the platform. That is a platform compatibility statement, not a guarantee that every table will prefer every combination of older and updated rules or content. See D&D Beyond’s compatibility guidance.

Know which D&D rules resource you need
D&D Beyond distinguishes its player-facing Basic Rules, intended to help players and Dungeon Masters learn the game, from the System Reference Document (SRD). The SRD is a reference creators can use as a foundation for publishing compatible material; it is not presented as the same thing as the Basic Rules learning resource. The SRD page identifies version 5.2.1, and says SRD 5.2 is released under CC-BY-4.0 and cannot be revoked or altered by Wizards of the Coast. How to choose among the Star Wars lines
Pick the line whose campaign perspective best matches the story your group wants. The official line description identifies all three as part of the Star Wars roleplaying game and says their core mechanics are interchangeable.

It also does not establish current inventory or regional availability for a particular Star Wars core book. Check the current edition, local availability, and stock before buying; the publisher’s Fantasy Flight Games pages have been affected by a migration or redirect, so a stable current product listing could not be confirmed.
