When a D&D rule is disputed, separate two questions: what the rules text says, and what decision the table needs right now. Check the version in use, consult the relevant rule and any official correction or ruling, then let the Dungeon Master make an in-session adjudication so the game can continue. If the group needs more time, agree to revisit the issue after the scene rather than turning the moment into a prolonged debate.

What do we do when the DM and a player disagree about a rule?

Start by identifying the exact point of disagreement. “That doesn’t work” is too broad to look up. Is the question about whether an action is allowed, when an effect takes place, how a condition changes a roll, or which book’s version of a rule applies? State the situation in concrete terms: the character, action or effect involved, and the timing that matters.

Then decide whether the table needs an answer immediately. If the ruling affects a dangerous or time-sensitive scene, a short pause to check a clear rule may be worthwhile; an extended search usually is not. The Dungeon Master can make a ruling for the current situation and keep the session moving. The group can investigate further afterward and decide whether a future ruling should change. That is a practical way to handle the table’s time, not an official procedure mandated by a rulebook.

  1. Name the question. Describe the disputed action, effect, timing, or condition in one sentence.
  2. Confirm the rules in use. Identify whether the table is using the 2014 rules, the 2024 core books, or a stated mix, and which source governs this campaign.
  3. Check the source. Read the relevant rule in context and check whether official errata or an applicable official ruling addresses it.
  4. Make a play ruling. The DM decides how to handle the situation now; the table can discuss a longer-term interpretation later.
  5. Keep the conversation respectful. Ask what text or interpretation the other person is relying on, rather than treating disagreement as bad faith.

This sequence distinguishes fact-finding from authority at the table. A book, correction, or official ruling can clarify what a source says; it does not make every disagreement disappear or remove the need to decide what happens in the current scene.

Who has the final say on a D&D rules question?

The fifth-edition Sage Advice Compendium says: “A Dungeon Master adjudicates the game and determines whether to use an official ruling in play.” It also states, “The DM always has the final say on rules questions.” In other words, an official rules reference can inform a decision, but the DM adjudicates how the game proceeds at that table.

This authority is about running play, not a claim that a DM can never reconsider a decision. If the group discovers a relevant correction or a better interpretation later, the DM can revisit the issue and explain how it will work going forward. It is useful to distinguish a temporary ruling made to resolve an immediate situation from the interpretation the group intends to use consistently in future sessions.

Players can still contribute meaningfully. They may point to a rule, identify an edition mismatch, or explain why a particular interpretation matters to their character. A concise, relevant reference helps the DM decide. Repeating the same argument after a decision has been made is less likely to clarify the rule and more likely to stall the game.

How do I look up a D&D rule during a session?

Search the actual rule text before relying on a remembered summary. The fifth-edition Sage Advice Compendium identifies the Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master’s Guide as the three core rulebooks. Which one matters depends on the question: a player-facing ability or spell may be described in the Player’s Handbook, while a monster’s statistics or a DM-facing procedure may be elsewhere.

Before opening a search result, pin down the edition and the rule’s subject. A result can be accurate for a different printing or rules version and still be wrong for your campaign. Check the full entry, including nearby definitions and exceptions, rather than relying on a snippet that omits context.

Use this quick source check

  • Rule text: What does the book the campaign uses say, read in context?
  • Errata: Has the publisher corrected or clarified that text?
  • Official ruling: Does the Sage Advice Compendium address the question?
  • Advice or interpretation: Is the explanation from a public statement rather than the Compendium?
  • Table decision: Given the available sources and the immediate situation, what ruling will let play proceed?

The Compendium draws a distinction between official rulings and other commentary: it treats rulings in the Compendium as official, while public statements by D&D staff or others at Wizards are advice, not official rulings. Advice can be useful, but label it correctly; a public explanation is not automatically an erratum or a binding ruling.

What does RAW mean, and what can it settle?

RAW means “rules as written”: examining what the text says in context without relying on the designers’ intent. It is one lens for analyzing a rules question, not a complete method for running a session. A careful RAW reading can resolve a straightforward wording dispute, but it cannot replace the DM’s decision about how to adjudicate play.

When someone says “that is RAW,” ask which sentence or rule supports the reading and which version it comes from. That turns a label into something the group can evaluate. If the wording remains unclear, separate the evidence from the conclusion: “This is what the text says; this is how I interpret it; this is the ruling for this scene.” That is clearer than presenting an interpretation as though the book stated it verbatim.

The Compendium also cautions against treating intent as the only answer. It says: “Regardless of what’s on the page or what the designers intended, D&D is meant to be fun, and the DM is the ringmaster at each game table.” That is not permission to ignore the rules whenever a disagreement occurs. It is a reminder that textual analysis and the practical responsibility to run a game are related but distinct.

Is Sage Advice an official ruling?

The name covers material that should not all be treated as equivalent. The Sage Advice Compendium is the official source for the rulings it contains. The Compendium says that such a ruling does not replace the DM’s adjudication: “It doesn’t replace a DM’s adjudication.” By contrast, a public statement from D&D staff or another person at Wizards is advice, not an official ruling as the Compendium defines that term.

Use the Compendium when a question appears to match one of its rulings, but compare the details rather than relying on a similar-sounding topic. A ruling about one wording, feature, or set of circumstances may not answer a different question. If no applicable ruling is there, return to the rule text and the DM’s adjudication; do not treat silence as proof for either side.

It can help to describe the source aloud: “The book says this,” “the current errata changes that,” or “the Compendium has a ruling on this.” Naming the category makes it easier for everyone to see whether the group has found a correction, an official ruling, an interpretation, or simply a different recollection.

Are the 2014 and 2024 D&D rules compatible?

“Compatible” depends on what is being combined. The official description of the 2024 core books presents them as updates to fifth edition and says existing adventures and supplements are compatible. Separately, the 2024 Player’s Handbook update says that when using that book, it replaces specified portions of the 2014 book: rules, classes, subclasses, spells, feats, equipment, species, and backgrounds, subject to listed exceptions for options not present in the 2024 book.

Those statements address different scopes. Being able to use an older adventure or supplement does not mean that every older player option or core rule remains unchanged. For a disputed question, establish the campaign’s governing text for that subject instead of treating “fifth edition” as a sufficient answer.

Question What to establish
Which core rules are in use? Whether the table is using the 2014 books, the 2024 books, or a defined combination.
Is an older character option involved? Whether the 2024 Player’s Handbook includes that option, and whether a listed exception applies.
Is the group using an older adventure or supplement? The 2024 core-book guidance says existing adventures and supplements are compatible; that does not settle which core rule text governs a specific disputed mechanic.

If the group mixes versions, make the choice explicit for recurring questions. Otherwise, different players may be drawing on different books without realizing it. A short campaign note naming the relevant versions and any agreed exceptions can prevent the same ambiguity from resurfacing.

When should you check official D&D errata?

Check errata when two copies or sources appear to disagree, a passage is unclear, or someone recalls a rule differently from the printed wording. Errata records publisher corrections and clarifications; it is more authoritative for corrected text than memory or an uncited summary.

The official errata listing says corrections and clarifications for the 2024 Player’s Handbook are reflected on D&D Beyond and available in downloadable PDFs. Its examples include corrections involving character traits, feats, spells, and rules glossary wording. The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide errata page likewise says corrections and clarifications are applied online and available in downloadable form. Consult the current official listing for the book in question, since errata can change.

When a correction applies, read it alongside the passage it changes and use the corrected text for the relevant question. Avoid assuming that every online wording difference is an erratum: identify the book and version, then confirm that the publisher lists a correction or clarification. For the campaign, record any consequential interpretation so the group can apply it consistently.

How can you disagree without derailing the session?

Respectful discussion is useful because rules questions often affect a player’s expectations, a character’s choices, or the stakes of a scene. The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide includes guidance on running sessions, resolving outcomes, mutual respect, and respect for players and the DM. That supports a respectful approach, but it should not be mistaken for a scripted mediation process.

Keep the exchange focused

  • Ask what specific result the other person expects and which text supports it.
  • Summarize the disagreement in neutral terms before looking anything up.
  • Give the DM time to make a decision; do not turn a quick rules check into a debate over anyone’s competence.
  • If the question cannot be resolved quickly, ask whether the DM can rule for the scene and revisit the interpretation later.

A player can advocate for a preferred reading without insisting that disagreement is disrespect. A DM can explain the immediate ruling without implying that a player was wrong to ask. Keeping those ideas separate makes it easier to challenge an interpretation while respecting the people at the table.

What if the same disagreement keeps coming back?

Move the conversation out of the scene and discuss the recurring issue as a group. Bring the exact rule, the campaign’s version, any applicable errata or Compendium ruling, and the practical consequences of the competing interpretations. Then agree how the question will be handled in future play. If the group chooses a table-specific ruling, make clear that it is the group’s campaign decision rather than a claim about what an official source says.

For questions involving a player’s build or a character option, clarify whether a change to the interpretation would affect earlier decisions. The point is not to reopen every past scene; it is to give the player and DM a shared understanding of what to expect next time. A brief written note can capture the chosen approach and the source that informed it.

If a disagreement is less about a rule than about how the game should feel, identify that separately. The text may settle what an ability does without settling whether the group wants a particular style of adjudication. Respectful conversation about expectations belongs outside the urgency of the moment, where players and DM can discuss it without interrupting the scene.
