For a group starting from scratch, buy the Dungeons & Dragons Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set. It is built for two to four players and a Dungeon Master, includes guided play, prebuilt characters, maps, tokens and an 11-die polyhedral set, and is designed to get a first session running quickly. If you are joining a campaign that already has a Dungeon Master, buy the 2024 Player’s Handbook instead. A new Dungeon Master should add the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide; the 2024 Monster Manual is useful for running encounters but is not required for a player.
You can also test the 2024 rules at no cost through D&D Beyond’s Free Rules. They include 12 base classes, 12 subclasses, 16 feats, 48 monsters and 333 spells, and D&D Beyond allows six characters to be created and maintained for free. One complete polyhedral dice set is enough to begin; additional sets are a convenience, not a rule requirement.
Which D&D 2024 purchase is right for you?
Your best first purchase depends on whether you are forming a new group, joining an established table or only testing the game.

What the three 2024 core books actually do
2024 Player’s Handbook: the player’s reference
The 2024 Player’s Handbook contains the rules for playing and the character options a player uses at the table. It is one of the three 2024 core rulebooks and is the most useful single book for someone making characters, choosing abilities and learning how the game resolves actions.
Buy it first when your group already has a DM, an adventure and access to monsters. You do not need to buy the DMG or Monster Manual simply because you are a player. A shared table may keep copies of those books, and a campaign can begin with the Free Rules instead.
2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide: procedures and campaign tools
The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide is written for the person who adjudicates the game and prepares the campaign. D&D Beyond describes it as providing advice and tools for exploration, social interaction and combat—the three broad pillars a DM manages.

A first-time DM can start with the Starter Set or another adventure and add the DMG when they want deeper guidance, campaign-organization tools and support for handling situations that an adventure does not spell out. It is a DM resource, not a prerequisite for every participant.
2024 Monster Manual: the creature reference
The 2024 Monster Manual is the DM-facing creature reference in the same core-rulebook catalog. It supplies creature material for encounters and is valuable when a campaign moves beyond the monsters included with a starter or adventure product.
A player who is not running encounters does not need this book to create a character or participate in a session. If you are buying for a new group, put it after the starter or adventure and DMG rather than on every player’s list.
Path 1: start with Heroes of the Borderlands
Who should choose the Starter Set?
Choose the physical Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set when your group has two to four players plus a DM, has little or no D&D experience, and wants a contained first adventure. D&D Beyond describes it as “your first step into the magic of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS.” Its guided play and prebuilt characters remove the largest early decisions: selecting options, building characters, finding an adventure and assembling visual aids.

Justice Ramin Arman, managing game designer, described the design goal as: “Overall, we aimed to build a smooth onboarding ramp—a true Starter Set—tuned for the 2024 rules revision.” That focus makes the set a better first purchase for a whole new group than buying three core books and trying to invent a campaign immediately.

What is in the physical box?
The official contents description lists maps, tokens and 11 polyhedral dice:
- 1d4
- 4d6
- 1d8
- 1d10
- 1d12
- 2d20
- 1 percentile die
The notation means the number of dice and the number of sides. For example, 4d6 means four six-sided dice, while 1d10 is one ten-sided die. The percentile die is used with the d10 to generate results from 00 to 99.
How quickly can a group play?
The set is designed to shorten the distance between opening the box and making the first decisions at the table. Players can select prebuilt characters rather than spending a preparation session on character creation, and the guided format gives the DM an on-ramp instead of requiring a complete campaign plan.
It is still worth scheduling a short session-zero conversation. Confirm who is DMing, agree on a regular meeting time, explain that players can ask to pause or clarify a scene, and decide whether the group will use physical maps and tokens or a digital display.
Path 2: buy the 2024 Player’s Handbook first
When this is the economical choice
If you are joining a campaign that already has a DM, buying the 2024 Player’s Handbook is usually the cleanest long-term choice. The DM may already own the adventure, creature references and table aids. Your book then covers the player decisions you will make repeatedly, rather than duplicating material the group already has.
This route also suits an experienced player who wants complete 2024 character-building information instead of a prebuilt character. You can still use the Starter Set or Free Rules later for another group; the purchases serve different purposes.
What to confirm with the DM first
- Ask whether the campaign uses the 2024 rules and whether any table-specific character restrictions apply.
- Ask whether the DM supplies a character sheet, dice and access to the adventure.
- Confirm whether the table is physical, digital or hybrid, because that affects whether you need printed materials or a digital character sheet.
- Check which options are allowed before planning a character around a feature the campaign does not use.
These questions prevent buying a book for a rules version or play format your table is not using.
Path 3: try the 2024 rules for free
What the Free Rules include
D&D Beyond’s 2024 Free Rules include 12 base classes, 12 subclasses, 16 feats, 48 monsters and 333 spells. That is enough to learn the basic game loop, create a supported character and run a small test session before committing to a physical book.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
D&D Beyond also states that its official toolset lets users create and maintain six characters for free. The allowance is useful for testing different classes or keeping characters for separate groups, but it does not replace a DM’s need for an adventure and preparation tools.
Who benefits most from this route?
- A curious player who has never rolled a d20 and wants to understand the loop first.
- A group deciding whether it can meet regularly before purchasing a starter product.
- A remote group that already has a video call and wants to test digital play.
- A DM who wants to run a short trial session before choosing a longer adventure.
Move to a physical Starter Set when the group wants guided content and table accessories, or to the Player’s Handbook when a player wants the full character reference. The free rules are a starting point, not a promise that every option in the paid books is included.
Do new players need the Dungeon Master’s Guide or Monster Manual?
If you are only playing a character
No. A player can begin with the 2024 Player’s Handbook, the Free Rules or a prebuilt character from the Starter Set. The DM handles encounter preparation and creature statistics. Buying both DM books as a new player adds cost and reading that may never be used.
If you are the Dungeon Master
Start with playable content. The Starter Set or an adventure product gives you a scenario to run. Add the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide when you want broader advice and tools for exploration, social interaction and combat. Add the 2024 Monster Manual when you need a larger creature reference than your adventure or starter materials provide.
This order keeps your first purchase tied to an actual session. A DM who buys all three core books before choosing a group, schedule or adventure may own useful references but still have nothing prepared to run.
How many dice do you need?
The minimum for a first session
One complete polyhedral set is enough for a first session, especially if you use the Heroes of the Borderlands box. Its listed contents are 1d4, 4d6, 1d8, 1d10, 1d12, 2d20 and one percentile die. Players can pass dice around or roll digitally when two people need the same die at once.
When extra sets are worth buying
Separate sets are a convenience for a regular in-person group. They reduce passing and let each player keep a familiar set beside their character sheet. Extra dice are particularly handy when several players roll at once or when a spell or effect calls for multiple dice of the same size.

Physical versus digital dice
Physical dice make a face-to-face table tactile and easy to read. Digital dice are practical for remote play and are included in the Heroes of the Borderlands Digital Adventure Pack. A group can mix the two; decide only that everyone can report results clearly and consistently.
Digital-first play with the Adventure Pack
The Heroes of the Borderlands Digital Adventure Pack is aimed at groups using D&D Beyond’s tools. The official digital starter guide lists pre-filled digital character sheets, 19 quickplay maps with monster tokens and a digital dice set.
This option is useful when players live in different places, want character sheets that stay synchronized or prefer not to store physical maps and tokens. It does not automatically solve scheduling, voice chat or a DM’s need to understand the adventure. Treat device access and account setup as part of preparation.
Digital and physical prices, regional availability and bundle contents can change. Check the current product listing for your region before paying, especially if you are comparing a digital pack with a boxed set.
A practical buying sequence for a new group
- Choose the table format. Decide whether the first session will be in person, online or hybrid.
- Name the DM. A group cannot start until one person agrees to prepare and adjudicate the session.
- Pick the route. Use the Starter Set for the fastest guided start, the Player’s Handbook for a player joining an existing campaign, or the Free Rules for a no-cost trial.
- Confirm the player count. The Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set is designed for two to four players and a DM; recruit within that range for its intended format.
- Prepare characters. Use the Starter Set’s prebuilt characters, create characters from the Player’s Handbook or Free Rules, or use the digital pre-filled sheets.
- Secure dice. One complete set is sufficient. Add personal sets only if passing dice becomes inconvenient.
- Run a short first session. Keep the initial goal modest: learn the turn structure, make a few meaningful choices and stop while the group still has questions for next time.
- Expand only after playing. Buy the DMG for broader DM guidance and the Monster Manual when the campaign needs more creature material.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying every core book for every player
The three core books have different jobs. The Player’s Handbook serves players; the DMG and Monster Manual primarily serve the DM. Share or borrow DM references unless several people genuinely need their own copies.
Assuming the Monster Manual is required to start
A player does not need creature statistics. Even a DM can begin with the creatures supplied by a starter or adventure product and add the Monster Manual later.
Purchasing dice before choosing a route
The physical Starter Set already lists an 11-die set, and the digital pack includes digital dice. Decide whether you are buying a box, joining an existing table or playing digitally before ordering multiple sets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMixing 2014 and 2024 assumptions without checking
Ask the DM which rules revision the campaign uses. The recommendations here target the 2024 rules and the products identified as 2024 editions. A table using an earlier rules set may organize character options and references differently.

Expecting the free rules to contain every option
The Free Rules are substantial but selective: 12 base classes, 12 subclasses, 16 feats, 48 monsters and 333 spells. If a character concept depends on an option outside that selection, verify access before building around it.
What to buy in three realistic scenarios
Four friends and a first-time DM
Buy the Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set. It matches the intended two-to-four-player group size, supplies prebuilt characters and guided play, and includes the listed maps, tokens and dice. Do not add the DMG and Monster Manual before the first session unless the DM specifically wants those references.
One newcomer joining a weekly campaign
Ask the DM whether the table uses the 2024 rules, then buy the 2024 Player’s Handbook if you want a durable player reference. Use the DM’s adventure and creature materials. Bring one polyhedral set if the table does not provide dice.

Start with the Free Rules and the free character allowance. If the group commits to playing, choose the Digital Adventure Pack for its pre-filled sheets, 19 quickplay maps, monster tokens and digital dice, or move to the physical Starter Set if you want a boxed table experience.
Budget and availability considerations
Prices, stock, sellers, regional availability and digital bundle contents change over time. Treat any price seen in a shop listing as current only for that listing and date; no fixed price is necessary to choose the correct product path.
For a physical purchase, confirm that the listing is the 2024 Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set or the 2024 edition of the Player’s Handbook, depending on your goal. For digital purchases, check which account features, maps, character sheets and dice are included in your region. A standard polyhedral dice set remains a separate convenience purchase when your chosen product does not include one.
When to expand beyond the essentials
Expand after the group has played enough to identify a real need. A player may want the Player’s Handbook for more complete character reference. A DM may want the Dungeon Master’s Guide for campaign advice and tools across exploration, social interaction and combat. The Monster Manual becomes worthwhile when the campaign needs creature material beyond its starter or adventure content.
This staged approach keeps the first purchase focused: get people playing, then spend on the reference that solves the next problem your table actually has.
