For a standard DayZ dedicated server, set the game listener with -port=2302 (UDP) and set steamQueryPort = 2305; in serverDZ.cfg. Forward the exact UDP ports your configuration uses; a different query value, blocked firewall rule or incorrect NAT rule can leave the server joinable by direct address but invisible in the public browser.
DayZ’s port roles at a glance
DayZ uses more than one endpoint. The game port carries player traffic, while Steam networking and the Steam query endpoint support discovery and status requests. The values below are the current documented example for a conventional installation.

These are examples, not immutable reservations. The launch parameter controls the game port, and the configuration file controls the query port. If you change the base port, recalculate the adjacent range described by the server documentation and give every instance its own non-overlapping values.
What is the default DayZ game port?
The commonly documented game-port example is UDP 2302. It is selected in the startup command, not by a hidden router setting. The parameter is written as -port=2302; the dedicated server then listens for game traffic on that port.

Because the value is a launch option, administrators can move a server to another port when 2302 is already occupied, when several instances run on one host, or when a hosting provider assigns a specific range. A Linux launch example uses -port=2301, demonstrating that 2302 is a convention rather than a requirement.
Windows-style launch example
DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 -profiles=profiles -dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheckAfter changing the command, restart the process and check its startup output. The value in the service definition, batch file or control panel is the authoritative game port; a port-forwarding rule that still targets 2302 will not help if the process now listens elsewhere.

What is the DayZ Steam query port?
The Steam query endpoint is configured separately from the game listener. In the current Bohemia Interactive configuration reference, the example is:

steamQueryPort = 2305;This UDP endpoint answers the queries used for server information and browser visibility. It is not automatically safe to assume that the query port equals the game port, and it is not enough to forward only the port players use for direct connection.
The same reference lists clientPort = 2304;. That setting should not be confused with steamQueryPort: one is a client-side configuration value, while the other identifies the server’s query endpoint.
Why do guides mention 27016 instead of 2305?
Older community instructions frequently use UDP 27016 for DayZ’s Steam query traffic. That convention remains visible in forum posts and older server recipes, but it is not the current example in the Bohemia Interactive configuration reference or in recent DayZ setup documentation. The authoritative value for a particular server is the number assigned to steamQueryPort in its own serverDZ.cfg.
Do not forward both 2305 and 27016 merely because a guide lists each one. Choose one configured query port, allow that UDP port through the host firewall, forward it to the server’s private address when NAT is involved, and verify the value in logs or the configuration file. If you deliberately set 27016, then 27016 is the port that must be opened for that instance; if the file says 2305, forwarding only 27016 will not make the server visible.

What about the DZSALauncher TCP port?
Some older community material associates TCP port 2312 with a game-port-plus-10 convention for DZSALauncher. That is a historical or launcher-specific practice, not a replacement for the Steam query setting documented by Bohemia Interactive. Treat any launcher or wrapper as a separate product with its own requirements, and follow its current documentation only when you actually use it.
Steam networking ports and the shifting block
DayZ troubleshooting guidance identifies UDP 2302 as the main game endpoint, UDP 2303–2304 for adjacent Steam networking, and UDP 2305 for queries. The range is tied to the base port: when the game port changes, the reserved neighboring values shift as well. For example, moving the game listener from 2302 to another base requires you to recalculate the corresponding adjacent block rather than continuing to forward 2303–2305 blindly.
- Record the new game-port value.
- Apply the documented offset pattern for Steam networking and query traffic.
- Check that no other DayZ instance or unrelated service owns any of those ports.
- Update both host-firewall rules and router forwarding together.
How to open the ports correctly
1. Confirm the server’s real settings
- Open the script, service unit or hosting-panel command that starts the executable.
- Read the number following
-port=; this is the game port. - Open the
serverDZ.cfgused by that same process, not a backup copy. - Read the value assigned to
steamQueryPort. - Save a written mapping of game, adjacent Steam and query ports for this instance.
2. Allow UDP traffic on the host
Create inbound UDP rules for the configured game port, the required adjacent Steam ports and the configured query port. Apply the rules to the network profile used by the server. A rule for TCP alone will not satisfy these documented UDP endpoints. If your operating system prompts for a private or public profile, select the profile that matches the server’s network and keep the rule limited to the DayZ executable where your firewall supports application scoping.
3. Forward the same ports through the router
When the machine is behind NAT, assign it a stable private address and create UDP port-forwarding entries from the public interface to that address. The external and internal numbers should match unless you have a deliberate translation plan; if they differ, the launch and configuration values still describe the internal listener, while clients must use the public mapping.

4. Restart and verify
Restart the server after editing the command or configuration. Watch the startup log for bind errors, which indicate that a port is already occupied or unavailable. Then test direct connection using the public address and game port, followed by a browser search. These are separate tests: direct joining exercises game traffic, while browser listing also requires a reachable and correctly configured query endpoint.

Why a server can accept direct connections but stay out of the browser
- Query port blocked: UDP game traffic is allowed, but the firewall or router drops the query endpoint.
- Wrong query value forwarded: The router targets 27016 while
serverDZ.cfguses 2305, or vice versa. - Stale launch configuration: The service starts with a different
-portthan the script you edited. - NAT target changed: The server received a new private IP, so forwarding now points at another device.
- Port collision: Another DayZ instance has claimed the game or query port.
- Wrapper defaults: A management wrapper may override the values in your expected command.
Work through the causes in that order. First compare the running command and configuration file with the router rules. Next inspect host-firewall logs and the server’s bind messages. Finally test from outside the local network; a connection from the same LAN can succeed even when hairpin NAT or the public forwarding path is broken.

Every instance needs a unique game port and a unique query port. Give each server a separate configuration file, startup definition, profile directory and documented port map. Do not rely on automatic increments unless the hosting software explicitly shows the resulting values.

A collision can produce confusing symptoms: one server may start while another fails to bind, or the browser may display only one of several instances. Read each process log instead of assuming that the first server’s values apply to all of them.

Wrapper and hosting-panel defaults
Control panels and wrappers can substitute their own defaults. For example, the ServerZ README documents UDP 2302 for game traffic and UDP 27015 for its query port. That differs from the 2305 example in the current DayZ configuration reference. If you use a wrapper, inspect its generated command line, configuration template and network settings; then forward the values it actually passes to the server. Never combine a wrapper’s query default with an unrelated standalone-server guide without checking the resulting files.
A practical troubleshooting checklist
- Find the process: Confirm the executable and the exact command used by the running service.
- Confirm the game port: Record the number after
-port=. - Confirm the query port: Read
steamQueryPortfrom the activeserverDZ.cfg. - Check bind status: Resolve any “address already in use” or permission error before testing discovery.
- Check UDP rules: Allow the game, adjacent Steam and query ports on the host firewall.
- Check NAT: Forward those same ports to the server’s current private IP.
- Test direct play: Use the public address and game port from a network outside the server’s LAN.
- Test listing: Search the Steam browser only after direct traffic works.
- Review changes: If the base port moved, recalculate the neighboring block and update every rule.
- Check wrappers: Compare panel-generated settings with the files you edited.
Recommended configuration pattern
For a single conventional instance, a clear baseline is a UDP game port of 2302 and an explicitly declared UDP query port of 2305:

Bottom line for DayZ port forwarding
Open the UDP game port selected by -port, the documented adjacent Steam-networking ports for that base, and the exact UDP value assigned to steamQueryPort. The current example is 2302 for game traffic and 2305 for queries, while 27016 belongs to older community practice. The configuration file and startup logs outrank any generic guide, especially when a wrapper or multiple instances are involved.
