When a DayZ server stops spawning loot or infected, start with the Central Economy (CE), not with a storage wipe. The CE reads your mission XML files, builds item and population rules, and persists the current economy. A missing registration, wrong class name, zero nominal value, unmatched map tags, disabled event, or stale persistence can stop one item, an entire loot system, or infected independently.
First identify the scope of the failure, then inspect cfgeconomycore.xml and the boot script_*.log. Correct the relevant file while the server is stopped, restart, and only use RestartSpawn=1 or a storage_1/ deletion when the evidence points to stale economy state. The sections below give a path for each symptom without wiping a working server unnecessarily.

How DayZ spawning is divided
The Central Economy is a server-side system that maintains item loot and other populations. Its configuration is split across several files, so changing one file cannot repair a problem controlled by another. The main files are documented in the DayZ server configuration reference and the loot economy deep dive.

The mission’s directory layout and the relationship between these files are described in the mission-folder directory guide. Keep the file paths used by your particular mission and mod set; a correctly edited file in the wrong mission folder has the same practical effect as a missing file.

1. Establish exactly what is missing
Do not begin by changing several XML files at once. Walk through a known area with a fresh restart and classify the symptom. Your answer determines which configuration layer to inspect.
- All ordinary loot is absent: investigate CE registration, economy switches, global state and the boot log.
- Only one custom item is absent: inspect that item’s
types.xmlentry, class name, nominal count and map tags. - Loot works but infected do not: move to
db/economy.xml,db/globals.xmland infected-related entries indb/events.xml. - Only one dynamic event is absent: check its event definition and, where applicable, its fixed coordinates in
cfgeventspawns.xml. - Items appeared before an edit but no longer respawn: verify the XML change, then consider stale persisted economy state after the configuration is known to be valid.
Record the test conditions: mission name, server restart time, area visited, item class or event name, and whether any other loot or infected appeared. This prevents a successful spawn from being mistaken for a global repair.

2. Confirm custom files are registered and read
Register every custom XML through cfgeconomycore.xml
The CE does not automatically read every XML file placed in a mission directory. A custom types, events, globals, economy or spawnabletypes file must be registered in cfgeconomycore.xml with the correct filename and schema type. Registration is a separate requirement from XML syntax: a file can be perfectly well-formed and still have no effect if its class name, path or registration entry is wrong.
- Stop the DayZ server before editing mission configuration.
- Open the active mission’s
cfgeconomycore.xml. - For each custom file, confirm the registration points to the exact filename, including capitalization and extension.
- Confirm the registration uses the schema type expected for that file (for example, a types file is not registered as an events file).
- Check that the edited file is in the same mission folder the server actually starts.
- Save, start the server and inspect the next boot log before testing in game.
The server troubleshooting guide lists registration and load errors among the first checks because they can make every downstream setting appear broken.
Use the boot log as the first objective test
Open the script_*.log generated during startup and search for Central Economy, XML, schema, file, class or event errors. Look at the boot that followed your latest edit; an old log can describe a configuration you have already replaced. A parse error, unknown tag, missing file or invalid class name is stronger evidence than an in-game walk through one town.

- If the log reports an XML or schema error, fix that error before changing spawn counts.
- If it reports a missing file, correct the registration path or filename rather than copying values into another file.
- If it reports an unknown class, verify the class name against the installed game or mod version.
- If it contains no reference to a custom file, revisit
cfgeconomycore.xmland the active mission path.
3. Repair an item that is missing from types.xml
Match the class name exactly
In db/types.xml, the item class must exactly match the class exposed by the game or mod. Class names are not descriptive labels. A spelling difference, outdated mod class, or capitalization change points the CE at an object that does not exist, so no amount of increasing its nominal count will make it spawn. Use the class name supplied by the current mod or game files and check the boot log for an unknown-class message.
Set a positive nominal count
The item’s nominal value is the target population the CE attempts to maintain. A value of 0 tells the economy not to maintain a population, so the item will not appear even if its category and usage tags are valid. Set a positive value appropriate for your server’s design, then restart and observe the result; do not confuse a larger target with a guarantee that every item will appear immediately.
Validate category, usage and value tags
Tags in the item entry are case-sensitive and must be names defined by the applicable limits definitions. Check each category, usage and, where used, value tag for exact spelling and capitalization. An undefined tag can invalidate the entry or leave it with no eligible locations.
Tags also have to correspond to map groups that contain actual positions. For example, assigning an item to a usage group that has no positions on your map gives the CE nowhere to place it. Compare the selected tags with the map’s available group definitions rather than copying tags from a different map or mod. Check the complete item entry
Review the entry as a unit. A positive nominal count with a nonexistent class, an undefined category, or an empty usage group still produces no loot. Confirm that the entry is in the loaded file, that its XML is well formed, and that any lifetime, restock or quantity settings you changed are compatible with the item type. If ordinary items spawn but this one does not, stay in types.xml rather than editing infected or global settings.

4. Fix a server with no infected or zombies
Loot definitions and infected populations use separate CE controls. A server can have normal item loot while spawning no infected, so a successful loot test does not prove that the infected configuration is healthy.
Inspect economy subsystem switches
Open db/economy.xml and verify that the relevant economy subsystems are enabled. A disabled switch can suppress a population even when its event and global limits are otherwise correct. Check the boot log after any change so you know the server accepted the file.
Check the global infected limit
Open db/globals.xml and inspect global limits such as ZombieMaxCount. If the limit is zero or otherwise too restrictive for the server’s population design, the CE has no capacity to maintain infected. Make the smallest change needed for your intended population and test after a clean restart. Do not use an extreme value as a diagnostic shortcut; it can create a performance problem while obscuring the original error.
Verify infected event definitions
Review the relevant entries in db/events.xml. The event must be present and active, and its limits and other conditions must permit spawning. An inactive or incorrectly named event cannot create infected even when ZombieMaxCount is positive. If only one infected type or event is missing, compare that entry with a known-working event in the same version rather than replacing the entire file.
5. Repair dynamic events and fixed spawn positions
Event-driven spawns require two separate pieces when the event uses fixed placement: an active definition in db/events.xml and matching coordinates in cfgeventspawns.xml. The event name must match between the files, including capitalization, and the coordinate entries must exist for the map and event type.

- Identify the event name associated with the missing loot drop, infected wave or other dynamic population.
- Confirm that exact name appears in
db/events.xmland that the event is enabled. - Determine whether the event expects fixed positions.
- If it does, find the same event name in
cfgeventspawns.xml. - Confirm that the coordinate list is present, valid for the active map and not empty.
- Restart and check the boot log for event or coordinate errors before visiting the location.
If the event is active but has no matching fixed coordinates, it can have a valid definition and still produce nothing. Conversely, adding coordinates for an event that is disabled or misspelled does not activate it. Always stop before editing persistence-related files
Stop the server before changing XML or persistence-related data. Never edit or delete economy persistence while the server process is running; the process can overwrite your change or leave an inconsistent state. Make a backup of the mission configuration and persistence directory before any destructive step.

Use a controlled restart first
After correcting XML, start the server and read the new boot log. A restart reloads the definitions and is the least disruptive recovery action. Allow the CE time to process the new rules; existing items and their lifetimes can affect when replacements become visible.
Use RestartSpawn=1 for one restart when stale state is suspected
If the configuration is valid but old economy state is preventing new values from appearing, set RestartSpawn to 1 for a single restart, then return it to 0. This is a controlled economy restart, not a substitute for fixing an XML error. Afterward, wait for item lifetimes to expire and check whether the CE begins maintaining the intended population.
Delete storage_1/ only for a full economy reset
Deleting storage_1/ resets the persisted economy and is the most disruptive option. It can remove the accumulated state that is blocking corrected values, but it also discards the stored economy for the affected mission. Use it only when configuration correction, a normal restart and the controlled RestartSpawn=1 path have failed and a full reset is acceptable. Stop the server, back up the directory, remove it according to your host’s documented procedure, then start the server and inspect the boot log.

This order keeps a one-item error from becoming a server-wide wipe. The broadest recovery should be chosen only after the narrower configuration and log checks have been exhausted.

“The XML validates, but nothing changed.”
Well-formed XML is only the first requirement. Confirm that cfgeconomycore.xml registers the file, that the registration uses the correct schema, and that the active mission folder contains the edited copy. Then look for the file being loaded in the boot script_*.log. If the log never references it, the CE is not using that file.
“I increased nominal, but the item still never appears.”
Check the class name and all case-sensitive tags. A positive nominal count cannot compensate for an undefined category, usage group with no map positions, or a class that the installed game or mod does not provide. Test with a known-valid map group and compare the entry with a working item from the same configuration version.
“A wipe fixed it temporarily.”
A wipe removes persisted economy state; it does not repair a bad definition. If the underlying registration, event or item tags remain wrong, the failure will return. Preserve the pre-wipe backup and compare the boot log and XML before deciding that a second wipe is warranted.
“Only infected disappeared after a loot edit.”
Do not assume the files are coupled. Recheck economy.xml, globals.xml and events.xml for infected controls. Loot entries in types.xml do not prove that infected events are active.
“The event is listed, but no event objects spawn.”
Verify the event’s active state and whether it uses fixed positions. For fixed events, match the event name exactly in cfgeventspawns.xml and ensure coordinates exist for the active map. A coordinate list for a misspelled event name is effectively unused.
Final verification checklist
Complete this checklist after every repair, in order:
- Stop the server and back up the mission XML and persistence data.
- Write down whether the failure is global, item-specific, infected-specific or event-specific.
- Confirm the active mission folder and exact filenames.
- Validate
cfgeconomycore.xmlregistrations and schema types. - Check class names, positive
nominalvalues and case-sensitive tags intypes.xml. - Ensure categories and usages map to groups with real positions.
- Check economy switches,
ZombieMaxCountand event activation for infected failures. - Match fixed-event names and coordinates in
cfgeventspawns.xml. - Start the server and read the new boot
script_*.logfor CE errors. - Test the smallest affected area or item before making broader changes.
- If valid settings remain hidden by old state, use
RestartSpawn=1once and return it to0; wait for lifetimes. - Use a backed-up
storage_1/reset only when a full economy wipe is acceptable.
Following that sequence separates configuration errors from persistence problems and keeps the recovery proportional to the symptom.
