Stable is DayZ’s default branch for normal play. Experimental is a separate public test branch where upcoming mechanics and patches are tried before release. The branches are isolated: clients can join only servers on the same branch, and progress earned on one branch does not carry to the other.
That separation affects which friends you can play with, which server software you install, how you switch in Steam, and how you plan a dedicated server. The sections below explain those differences and give the exact client and SteamCMD paths.

DayZ Stable and Experimental at a glance
| Area | Stable | Experimental |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Default branch intended for regular play. | Public test branch for features, mechanics and patches before they reach Stable. |
| Reliability | Generally the less risky choice because it is the default release branch. | May contain game-breaking bugs, performance problems and unfinished features. |
| Who you can play with | Only players and servers on Stable. | Only players and servers on Experimental. |
| Progression | Separate from Experimental progress. | Separate from Stable progress; progress does not transfer between branches. |
| Steam client setting | NONE - Opt out of all beta programs in the BETAs menu. |
Experimental selected in the BETAs menu. |
| Dedicated-server Steam app ID | 223350. |
1042420. |
| Linux server availability | Not guaranteed for every patch; verify the current build. | Not guaranteed for every patch; verify the current build. |
The two branches are not two settings on one shared environment. Steam installs and launches a particular branch, and the server software is also identified by a branch-specific app ID. Treat them as separate environments when planning a community server or testing a patch.
What “Experimental” means in DayZ
Experimental is a public testing channel. Bohemia Interactive uses it to expose changes to players before those changes become part of the default Stable build. New mechanics, gameplay adjustments and patches can therefore appear there first.

Testing software is inherently less predictable than using the default branch. An Experimental update can introduce a crash, a severe performance regression, a broken interaction or an unfinished feature. Those problems may be fixed in a later Experimental update or resolved before the change reaches Stable; the branch should not be treated as a promise that every test feature will ship unchanged.
Stable is the normal starting point for players who want the established release branch. It is also the branch to choose when a group needs the fewest surprises and wants to remain on the same environment used by most regular servers. No published figures establish a universal crash rate, player-count difference or release cadence between the branches, so decisions should be based on the branch’s purpose rather than an assumed percentage improvement.

Client and server branches must match
A DayZ server accepts clients from its own branch. A Stable client cannot join an Experimental server, and an Experimental client cannot join a Stable server. The same rule applies to a dedicated server: installing the Experimental server app does not make it compatible with Stable clients.
When a connection fails immediately after a branch change, check the branch on both ends before changing ports, firewall rules or mods. A branch mismatch is a compatibility problem, not a network diagnosis.
Characters and progress are separate
Progress made while playing Experimental does not transfer to Stable, and Stable progress does not transfer to Experimental. A character, inventory or other progression state created on one branch should be considered confined to that branch. Switching back to the other branch should not be expected to restore the same state.

This matters when testing with a long-lived character. Use Experimental for disposable testing or for a group that knowingly accepts a separate progression track. Keep regular play on Stable if retaining that character’s progress is the priority.

Players on Experimental meet other Experimental players, while Stable players remain in the Stable population. Before switching, agree on one branch with your group and confirm that the server they intend to use was installed for that branch. A friend’s server name alone is not enough evidence of compatibility; the branch behind it is decisive.
How to switch the DayZ client to Experimental
The branch is selected through DayZ’s Steam properties. Steam may need to download or update files after the selection changes, so make the switch before the session in which you intend to play.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click DayZ in the games list.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the BETAs tab.
- Use the branch drop-down to select the Experimental option.
- Close the properties window and allow Steam to download or update the branch files.
- Launch DayZ only after Steam reports that the update is complete.
The game client’s Steam app ID is 221100. That ID identifies the client listing; it is not the app ID used when installing a dedicated server.
Return to Stable
- Open the same Steam Library entry and right-click DayZ.
- Select Properties, then open BETAs.
- Choose
NONE - Opt out of all beta programs. - Let Steam finish switching the installed files before launching.
Opting out does not merge Experimental progress into Stable. It only changes the client branch, so the character and progression available in the Stable environment remain governed by Stable’s separate data.

What to check after changing branches
- Confirm Steam has finished the branch download rather than showing a pending update.
- Verify that the server you plan to join is running the same branch.
- Expect a different progression state; do not assume a missing character indicates data loss.
- If the game still behaves as though it is on the previous branch, exit Steam completely, reopen it and check the BETAs selection again.
Dedicated-server app IDs and installation choices
Steam distributes the dedicated servers through different app IDs. Use the server ID that matches the branch you intend to host, not the DayZ client ID.
| Server branch | Steam app ID | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Stable | 223350 |
A dedicated server intended for Stable clients. |
| Experimental | 1042420 |
A dedicated server intended for Experimental clients. |
| DayZ client | 221100 |
The game client listing; do not use this ID for a dedicated-server install. |
Installing the wrong app is an easy way to create a server that no member of your intended group can join. Record the branch and app ID together in your deployment notes, especially if you administer more than one instance.
Installing an Experimental server with SteamCMD
The Bohemia community Linux-hosting example uses SteamCMD with the Experimental app ID. Its command pattern is:
steamcmd +force_install_dir ~/servers/dayz-server/ +login your_login +app_update 1042420 +quit
+force_install_dir selects the destination, +login your_login supplies the SteamCMD login, and +app_update 1042420 requests the Experimental dedicated-server app. The final +quit closes SteamCMD after the update.
Installing Stable instead
Use the same SteamCMD pattern with the Stable server app ID:

steamcmd +force_install_dir ~/servers/dayz-server-stable/ +login your_login +app_update 223350 +quit
The separate directory in this example is a practical safeguard when one machine hosts both branches. It keeps the files for each app distinct and makes it harder to start a Stable service from an Experimental directory. The app ID, launch configuration and service definition should all identify the same branch.
SteamCMD login caveat
A third-party guide reported that anonymous SteamCMD login did not work and that the account used for installation needed to own DayZ. That requirement was not confirmed against an official source in the available material, so treat it as a troubleshooting possibility rather than a guaranteed rule. If an anonymous session cannot download the app, test with an authenticated account that owns the game and check the current SteamCMD response.

Linux hosting: verify the current patch before committing
Linux availability is not consistent enough to assume from the branch name alone. The available documentation disagrees about which branch has a Linux dedicated-server build, and a Pelican egg README noted that a Stable Linux binary was missing as of May 2022. That note is historical and may not describe the current release.
Before building a Linux service, verify the current branch and patch status in SteamDB or in a current Bohemia announcement. Confirm that the executable exists for the exact app and depot you plan to install. If the required binary is unavailable, changing the app ID or forcing a client install will not create a supported Linux server; you need a currently available build or a different hosting arrangement.
Do not copy a Linux assumption from Stable to Experimental, or vice versa. Availability can differ by branch and can change with a patch, so document the date and build you validated.

Choosing the right branch for a server
Choose Stable when continuity matters
- Your community wants the default release environment.
- Players need to keep their Stable progression separate from testing.
- You are operating a long-running server and want to avoid knowingly unfinished changes.
- Your hosting platform has confirmed a Stable server binary for the target operating system and patch.
Choose Experimental when testing is the purpose
- Your group wants to try upcoming mechanics before they reach Stable.
- Everyone accepts possible bugs, performance problems and unfinished features.
- The group is willing to maintain a separate character and progression track.
- You have confirmed that the Experimental server app and required operating-system build are available.
Run both only as two separate environments
Running both branches can make sense for a community that wants a dependable public server and a controlled test server. Treat them as independent deployments: use the correct app ID, directory, service entry and player instructions for each. Tell players explicitly which branch they must select in Steam and warn them that progress stays on the branch where it was earned.
Troubleshooting common branch problems
“The server does not appear or will not accept my connection”
- Check the client’s BETAs selection in Steam.
- Ask the administrator which server app ID was installed:
223350indicates Stable and1042420indicates Experimental. - Make sure Steam completed any pending client update.
- Only after the branch matches should you investigate ordinary server issues such as address, port, firewall or server availability.
“My character or progress is missing after switching”
First check whether the branch changed. Progress is isolated, so a character created on Experimental will not appear in Stable and a Stable character will not appear in Experimental. Switch back to the branch where that progress was created; do not delete local files or assume the state can be merged.
“SteamCMD installed the wrong server”
Inspect the command and installation directory. The client ID 221100 is not a dedicated-server ID. Reinstall or update the intended app in a branch-specific directory, then ensure the service starts from that directory. A Stable server requires 223350; an Experimental server requires 1042420.
“The Linux executable is missing”
Check current availability for the exact branch and patch. Historical documentation may be outdated, and availability differs by branch. Verify the app’s current depots and announcements before changing launch scripts or assuming a permissions problem.
“SteamCMD refuses an anonymous install”
Review the SteamCMD output and try an authenticated login. A third-party report associated this failure with the need for a Steam account that owns DayZ, but that requirement is not confirmed here as an official universal rule. Avoid sharing credentials in service files or shell history; use the account and credential-handling method appropriate for your host.

- Write down the branch you intend to use before opening SteamCMD.
- For clients, use DayZ Properties > BETAs and wait for Steam to finish updating.
- For servers, match Stable to app ID
223350or Experimental to1042420. - Keep client and server branches identical for every player.
- Tell players that progression is separate and will not transfer.
- Validate Linux binaries for the current patch instead of relying on an old README.
- If hosting both branches, use separate directories and clearly named services.
- When diagnosing a failed join, prove branch compatibility before changing network settings.
Final decision
Stable is the sensible choice for ordinary play, established progression and a community that values continuity. Experimental is the right choice for deliberate testing of pre-release changes, provided every participant accepts instability and a separate progression track. The decisive operational rule is simple: the client, server app and player group must all use the same branch.
