DayZ error codes identify which layer failed: your local files, the login session, the route to a server, or BattlEye. The code narrows the fix, but the same message can have different causes depending on whether it affects one server or every server. Record the hexadecimal code, message, server, platform and time first; then follow the code-specific procedure below.
How to read a DayZ error code
Bohemia Interactive’s error reference groups DayZ failures into connection and login errors, client kicks, login-machine or database timeouts, authentication failures and BattlEye events. That grouping is more useful than treating every code as a generic “server problem.”

The scope is an important diagnostic clue. A failure on one server points toward that server’s route, configuration or a regional path. A failure on every server points toward your installation, account session, local network or anti-cheat client. Do not infer a hardware fault, cheating or a permanent ban from a code alone.
Use this safe troubleshooting order
- Capture the evidence. Write down the exact hexadecimal code and message, your platform, the server name, whether other servers work, your connection type and the local date and time.
- Check the pattern. Try a different server. If only one fails, preserve that server’s name and time for a report. If every server fails, continue with local checks.
- Separate client-data errors from network errors. Verify or restore DayZ files for modified-data messages; inspect routing and connection stability for reachability and timeout messages.
- On Steam for PC, confirm the branch. Open your library, right-click DayZ, choose Properties, open BETAs, and confirm that the intended Stable or Experimental branch is selected. A branch mismatch can leave the client on data that does not match the server.
- Test without changing unknown router settings. Review filtering and parental-control rules, and compare another network if available. Do not disable security features blindly.
- Escalate with reproducible details. Include the code, complete message, server, time, platform, connection type and the steps already tried. Add a traceroute when the official troubleshooting request calls for one.
- Use the correct support owner. DayZ support handles game and server-access issues; BattlEye handles its own ban administration and anti-cheat client support.
0x00020009: “CONNECT (connecting failed)”
This code means the client could not complete the connection attempt. Bohemia’s official PC troubleshooting guidance puts clean game data first, rather than asking players to alter ports or unrelated Windows settings.

Fix sequence
- Close DayZ and its launcher.
- Reinstall the vanilla DayZ data and installed downloadable-content data so that no modified or damaged files remain.
- For a Steam PC installation, use the client’s file-verification command after reinstalling or repairing the installation.
- Confirm the intended Stable or Experimental branch in Properties > BETAs.
- Try the same server again, then test a second server to determine whether the failure is server-specific.
If the clean installation does not resolve 0x00020009, record the server name, approximate attempt time and connection method. Run a traceroute to the problematic server if requested by support, and include the result with your report. A traceroute is evidence about the path, not proof that the final hop is at fault; many servers intentionally do not answer traceroute probes.
0x00050017: “Server unreachable”
0x00050017 is a reachability failure: your client cannot reach the selected server. It is especially worth investigating the network path when you played successfully for a long time and the problem began after an ISP, modem or router change.

- Try another DayZ server. If other servers work, keep the original server name and attempt time for a report.
- Restart the router and check whether its firmware, filtering profile or parental-control rules changed.
- Review outbound filtering and security policies without turning off protections you do not understand.
- Compare a different connection, such as a wired link instead of congested Wi-Fi or a trusted alternate network. A temporary comparison can show whether the ISP path is involved.
- Capture the connection type, ISP or network arrangement, server, date and time. Add a traceroute when support asks for one.
Do not make random port-forwarding or firewall changes. If the alternate network works, give the ISP or network administrator the exact destination, time and traceroute rather than guessing which setting to change.

0x00040031: PLAYER_STATE_TIMEOUT
This code indicates that the player remained too long in one login-machine state. It is not a diagnosis of a particular cable, router or computer component. The useful next step is to provide the connection context that lets support correlate the stalled state with a server or region.
Information to collect
- Whether the connection is wired or Wi-Fi.
- Available connection-speed information.
- Your geographic region.
- The exact server name.
- The precise date and time of the attempt, including your time zone.
Before reporting, test another server once. If every server produces the timeout, note that pattern; if only one does, identify that server clearly. Avoid repeatedly reconnecting for long periods without recording times, because that makes the event harder to correlate.
0x00040009: MODIFIED_DATA
MODIFIED_DATA means the client detected data that is modified or corrupted. The official wording includes corruption, so this code is not proof that a player cheated. Treat it as a file-integrity problem first.

Restore a clean client
- Exit DayZ and the launcher.
- Remove or disable unofficial modifications and return to the intended game branch.
- Use the platform’s verify or repair function for DayZ files.
- If verification still reports a problem, reinstall the affected vanilla and DLC data.
- Launch again and test an official, unmodified server before adding any optional content.
If the error returns immediately after a clean verification, preserve the exact message, branch, platform and server. Do not claim that deleting random folders or changing account credentials will repair corrupted content unless the support instructions specifically request it.
0x00040004: TIMEOUT and 0x0004000A: unstable network
0x00040004 — network timeout
0x00040004 means the network session did not complete within the allowed time. Check whether other internet services are stable, avoid a heavily loaded Wi-Fi connection, pause large downloads and retry on a wired connection when practical. Record the server and exact time if the timeout repeats.
0x0004000A — unstable network
0x0004000A identifies instability rather than a single missed response. Look for packet loss or intermittent wireless performance, competing traffic and recent router or ISP changes. A different network can help distinguish a local wireless issue from a wider route problem. Neither code by itself proves that a network adapter or other hardware has failed.

0x000400F0: BattlEye
0x000400F0 is defined as a BattlEye kick. Read the complete accompanying message because a global-ban notice and a BattlEye client-start or update failure require different support paths.
If the message concerns a global ban
Contact BattlEye through its own support process. Bohemia Interactive’s official FAQ states: “The banning system is administrated by Battleye, we have absolutely no involvement in the process of detecting cheats/hacks nor administrating any bans etc.” Reinstalling DayZ cannot be promised as a way to reverse a BattlEye-administered ban.
If BattlEye fails locally without a ban notice
Follow BattlEye’s client-support instructions. Where its FAQ directs affected users to do so, remove and reinstall the local BattlEye folder, then restart the launcher and test again. Keep the full error text and note whether the failure occurs on every server. Do not download replacement anti-cheat files from unofficial mirrors.

When the DayZ server list is empty
An empty browser is not always an installation failure. Bohemia Interactive says that, if it is Wednesday, the most likely cause is scheduled server maintenance at 08:00 (GMT +1). This schedule is stated on its official support page and was current on October 14, 2026.
- Check whether the day and time coincide with the Wednesday maintenance window.
- Wait until the maintenance period has passed, then restart the browser.
- If the list remains empty afterward, contact customer support and provide your platform, region, connection type and the time you checked.
What not to assume from a code
- Modified data is not automatically cheating. Corruption is explicitly included in the official meaning of 0x00040009.
- A timeout is not automatically defective hardware. 0x00040004 and 0x0004000A describe session behavior, not a failed component.
- One unreachable server is not proof that DayZ is down. Compare another server and preserve the destination and time.
- Reinstalling the game does not guarantee removal of a BattlEye ban. Ban administration belongs to BattlEye.
- Arma 2 is not required. Bohemia’s FAQ describes DayZ as a standalone product.
- Do not change router settings blindly. An incorrect filter or port rule can create a new problem and erase useful diagnostic information.
How to write an effective support report
A support team can act faster when the report describes one reproducible event instead of a general statement that “DayZ will not connect.” Include:
- Exact hexadecimal code and all message text.
- Platform and, on PC, Stable or Experimental branch.
- Server name and whether other servers work.
- Connection type (wired or Wi-Fi), relevant speed information and region.
- Local date, exact time and time zone.
- Recent changes such as an ISP, router, branch, reinstall or network move.
- Verification or reinstall results.
- Traceroute output for a reachability case when requested.
Send unresolved game issues through Bohemia Interactive’s DayZ support or feedback channel. Send global-ban questions and non-ban BattlEye client failures to BattlEye, because the two organizations have different responsibilities.

The practical rule is simple: repair files only for file-integrity messages, investigate routing for reachability and instability messages, and use BattlEye for BattlEye decisions. Preserve the exact code and timing before changing anything; that evidence is often more valuable than another blind reinstall.
