In DayZ, your first priority is staying alive, not finding a rifle. Secure drinkable water and several food items, learn the controls, keep your clothes dry, and avoid unnecessary fights. A knife, bandages, a repair item and a cautious route will carry you farther than an overloaded backpack or a gun you cannot maintain.
This guide gives you a practical plan for the first minutes, first night and first inland trip, including what to loot, how to handle weather and injuries, when to fight infected, and how to choose between coastal and inland routes.
What to do in your first 10 minutes
- Pause and learn the controls. Open the controls or keybindings menu before moving far. Confirm the buttons for inventory, dropping and combining items, crouching, sprinting, aiming, melee attacks, raising your hands, checking your temperature and interacting with doors. Infected can reach you while you are still learning, so knowing these actions is a survival requirement rather than an optional tutorial.
- Identify your location. Look for road signs, distinctive buildings, the coastline, railway tracks, power lines and water towers. Do not run inland at random. Establish a direction first, then move between buildings instead of crossing open ground.
- Find a drinkable water source. Town water pumps are a reliable early target. Drink until your character is comfortably hydrated, but do not empty your entire stomach in one attempt; pause if your stomach icon indicates fullness. Treat unknown bottles and canteens as unsafe until you empty and disinfect them.
- Search houses for food. Take canned food, fruit, vegetables and packaged drinks. Keep at least one spare food item in your inventory rather than assuming the next building will contain something.
- Pick up a cutting tool or improvised weapon. A stone knife made from two small stones is useful for opening food, cutting clothing into rags and handling basic tasks. A pipe, shovel, pitchfork or other melee weapon is safer than fighting empty-handed.
- Leave before you are overloaded. Keep room for water, food, medical supplies and ammunition you can actually use. Heavy gear drains stamina and makes every escape harder.
Food and water: the priority that prevents most early deaths
Use a simple hydration and food cycle
Starvation and dehydration are among the most common beginner causes of death. Drink at a pump when you reach a town, then search nearby homes while your hydration improves. Eat small portions regularly instead of waiting for the hunger indicator to become critical. Keep one or two spare food items on your character, even when your stomach and energy indicators look healthy.
Canned food may need a knife or can opener. If you have no opener, try a suitable sharp tool and watch the condition of both the tool and the can. Damaged food can create additional problems, so do not consume an item that is rotten or clearly unsafe. Fruit and vegetables found in homes can be eaten immediately, but inspect their condition first.

Do not trust every container
A bottle or canteen found in a building may contain contaminated water. Empty it, then disinfect it with a chlorine tablet if you have one, or refill it from a safe pump. Drinking from an untreated source can turn a successful loot run into a medical emergency. If you become sick after drinking, stop sharing containers and food with other players and isolate the contaminated item until you can treat the illness.
Carry water without destroying stamina
A full backpack of bottles is not a plan. Carry one or two containers, refill them at pumps, and keep your load light enough to run when necessary. If you must choose between another heavy item and a reliable water container, water normally wins during the first day.

Do not sprint everywhere. Sprinting consumes stamina, increases exhaustion and can leave you unable to climb, fight or escape when an infected or hostile player appears. Walk or jog through settled areas, sprint only across exposed ground, and stop periodically to recover stamina behind cover.
- Use crouching near infected and when crossing sight lines between buildings.
- Keep enough stamina for an emergency retreat; a completely empty bar can be fatal.
- Close doors behind you when practical. A closed door buys time and can indicate that another player has recently visited.
- Do not zigzag through unfamiliar interiors. Learn the exit before searching a room.
Early gear: what deserves an inventory slot

Condition matters. A badly damaged jacket may hold less, protect you poorly and fail during the next fight. Repair important clothing with duct tape when its condition falls, and avoid collecting several damaged versions of the same item.

Staying warm and dry
Wet clothing lowers body temperature and increases the risk of hypothermia and disease. Rain is not merely cosmetic: it changes how long you can remain outside and how much food your body consumes. Carry a raincoat or another weather-resistant layer, and check your clothing after storms.
What to do when you are soaked
- Move under a roof and wring out or replace wet clothing where the game allows.
- Use a fire in a fireplace, stove or safe outdoor location to warm yourself. Stand close enough to heat up without walking into the flames.
- Keep flammable supplies and valuable gear organized before lighting the fire.
- Wait until your temperature improves, then leave with a dry route and a weather plan.
A fire is also a visibility signal. Use one only when the warmth is worth advertising your position, and avoid obvious windows or exposed campsites when other players may be nearby.

Bleeding, illness and basic medical decisions
Stop bleeding immediately
Bleeding drains blood rapidly and can kill you while you are still searching for a hospital. Apply a bandage as soon as the bleeding indicator appears. If you have no bandage, combine a knife with spare clothing to make rags, then use the rags. Dirty rags can create medical complications, so use clean bandages whenever possible and replace improvised materials when you find better supplies.
Separate contamination from ordinary hunger
Vomiting, repeated sickness or a rapidly worsening status is not solved by eating more. Stop consuming questionable food or water, avoid passing containers between players and look for appropriate treatment. Keep your hands and food handling clean, and do not assume a second drink from the same bottle is safe.

Protect your blood and health
Do not take fights while bleeding, starving or freezing. A minor hit can become fatal when your blood and health are already low. Rest in a secure building, eat and drink in measured amounts, and resume travel only when your indicators are recovering.
Weapons and infected: when not fighting is the correct move
Any usable weapon is better than none, but a weapon does not make every encounter safe. During your first minutes, avoid infected unless you have a melee weapon, an escape route and enough stamina to finish the encounter. Gunfire attracts additional infected and nearby players, while a prolonged melee fight can damage clothing and cause bleeding.

A safer infected routine
- Scout the area before entering. Identify isolated infected and the nearest doorway, fence or building you can use to break line of sight.
- Pull one infected away from the group when possible. Fighting several at once multiplies the chance of a stagger, bleed or ruined weapon.
- Use controlled melee attacks, block when appropriate and retreat rather than trading hits while exhausted.
- Close a door or climb an obstacle to create distance. Do not assume every fence or window is a safe escape; test routes in low-risk areas.
- Check your clothes, health and weapon condition immediately after the fight.
If an infected spots you while you are unarmed, run toward a building, shed or obstacle instead of trying to punch through the encounter. Breaking the chase is often more valuable than the loot inside that first house.
Where to loot: coast, inland or military areas?
Beginner advice conflicts on the best opening route. Some guides favor inland military bases and hunting cabins because they can provide stronger equipment. An EarlyGuides recommendation updated in August 2026 favors coastal looting for faster access to military gear, while warning that coastal routes expose you to more player-versus-player danger. Both approaches can work because loot distribution, player traffic and server population change.

Test both routes on your current map and server rather than treating either as universal. Start with a short loop that returns to a known pump or landmark. If you repeatedly die at one military location, change the route or timing instead of repeating the same approach.
Server choice and player encounters
Low-population or PvE servers can help you learn controls, map signs and medical systems without constant ambushes. They do not remove environmental danger, and server rules vary, so read the description before joining. On a high-population server, assume that an apparently empty town may contain another player.

- Approach towns from cover and pause to listen before opening doors.
- Avoid standing in road centers, doorways or the top of a tower where you become an easy silhouette.
- Do not fire a gun merely to test it. Noise reveals your position and may draw infected.
- If you see another survivor, keep distance and cover. A friendly gesture is not proof of safety.
- Store critical food, water and medical items on your character rather than in one easily lost container.
A practical first-day route
Phase 1: establish a baseline
Leave the spawn area only after you have a drinkable water source identified, one food item, a cutting tool and some form of clothing protection. Search enough buildings to find bandages or rags, then stop looting when your inventory becomes difficult to manage.
Phase 2: make a controlled inland move
Follow a road, railway or power line toward a smaller settlement. Travel during good visibility, pause to recover stamina and use landmarks to confirm your direction. At each town, repeat the same priorities: water, food, medical supplies, warm clothing and a usable weapon.

Phase 3: prepare for night or bad weather
Choose a building with more than one exit, or a concealed location near shelter. Dry your clothes, repair the most important damaged item, refill water and place food where you can reach it quickly. Avoid lighting a fire in a prominent house if the server is busy.
Phase 4: upgrade only after the basics are stable
Once you can survive a day without emergency looting, consider a military area, hunting cabin or longer expedition. Bring enough food and water for the return trip, not just the approach. Decide in advance what you will abandon if your bag fills.

Update 1.29 was identified as the most recent stable patch in the available 2026 update information and released on 8 April 2026. It improved loot placement in bunkers and shipwrecks, corrected badly placed loot at airfield bunkers, made new-player spawns more random so repeated deaths are less likely to return you to exactly the same spot, and added clothing items.
Update 1.26 introduced a regional loot economy that divides spawn pools by map and climate. An earlier Sakhal update also reworked loot in tall buildings and barracks. These changes mean a route learned from an older video may produce different results on another map or version.
Update 1.30, titled “Badlands” in the available listings, was described as upcoming with regional firearms and clothing, but no confirmed release date was established there. Check the version shown by your game and the current official patch notes before relying on a route built around 1.30 features.
Common first-day problems and fixes

How to judge whether you are ready to travel farther
- You know your next water source and can explain how to reach it without guessing.
- You have at least one food item in reserve, a cutting tool and a usable melee weapon.
- You can stop bleeding and have spare rags or bandages.
- Your clothing is dry enough for the weather and your backpack still leaves room for essentials.
- You have enough stamina to retreat and a mental map of at least two escape routes.
- You understand the server’s population and are prepared to avoid rather than challenge other players.
When those conditions are met, upgrades become worthwhile. Until then, another rifle or helmet is usually less valuable than water, warmth, a knife and the ability to leave a fight.
