To build a usable base in DayZ, start with a fence kit made from two sticks and a rope, add two wooden logs, frame the fence with a shovel and hammer, and finish it with planks driven by nails. Turn a completed fence into a gate by attaching metal wire with pliers, then secure it with a three- or four-dial combination lock. A good site, hidden backup storage and regular maintenance matter as much as the construction itself.
The exact decay period is not universal. Community reports commonly cite 45 days for fences, watchtowers and tents, potentially extending to about 90 days with a raised flag pole, while other reports cite 42 or 43 days. Private servers can change these settings, so treat every timer as a server-dependent estimate.

What you need before building
DayZ construction is a sequence of kits, tools and materials rather than a single build command. Gather the tools first, because a missing tool can leave a frame unfinished while you are exposed.
Core tools

Keep a spare hatchet, saw and hammer nearby if your storage allows it. Tools wear out, and a broken tool can interrupt a build at the most visible stage.

Basic materials
- Wooden logs and planks: the structural materials for fences, gates and watchtowers. Logs come from trees; a saw turns logs into planks.
- Nails: the main consumable bottleneck. Industrial areas and outhouses can contain boxes of 70 nails, but a substantial base can require several boxes.
- Rope: required for a fence kit. Craft it from two stacks of six rags or from one Pile of Guts, using a knife.
- Metal wire: required to add a gate mechanism to a completed fence.
- Combination lock: a three-dial or four-dial lock secures a gate after the wire is installed.
- Sheet metal: reinforces wooden wall sections and provides stronger protection than an unreinforced wooden covering.
Collect nails before hauling logs. A pile of timber without enough nails cannot be turned into a defensible wall, while nails are comparatively difficult to gather in large quantities.
How to build a fence on PC
The following control names are the PC wording reported by community guides. Your server, game version or input bindings may display slightly different text.
- Craft a fence kit. Combine two sticks and one rope. Place the finished kit on the ground where you want the fence.
- Prepare the foundation. Look at the placed kit and use a shovel to level the placement area if prompted.
- Add the posts. Put two wooden logs into the kit. The axe or hatchet and shovel are needed for this stage.
- Build the frames. Look at the fence and select Build Lower Frame, then Build Upper Frame. Hold the action rather than tapping it; construction progresses while the action is held.
- Install the wooden covering. With planks, nails and a hammer available, hold the prompt Build Wooden Coverings. This turns the open frame into a solid wall section.
- Reinforce if desired. Add sheet metal to the appropriate covering when you have it. Metal uses additional resources but makes the section harder to defeat than plain wood.
A fence has two usable sides. Plan which side faces the approach before completing the frame, because the orientation determines where you can work on the covering and where a gate mechanism will be installed.
If a build prompt does not appear
- Stand close to the specific component you are trying to build; looking at the wrong side of a frame can hide the action.
- Check that the required tool is equipped or available in your inventory and that the required logs, planks and nails are present.
- Confirm the foundation is level. Move the kit and place it again if the ground is uneven or an object is intersecting the planned wall.
- Finish the lower and upper frame before looking for the wooden-covering prompt; coverings are not available on an unframed kit.
Turning a fence into a gate
A gate uses a completed fence as its starting point. You need metal wire and pliers in addition to the normal fence materials.
- Finish the fence through the wooden-covering stage.
- Equip or carry metal wire and pliers.
- Look at the completed fence and choose Build Gate.
- After the gate mechanism is installed, place a three-dial or four-dial combination lock through the gate’s inventory.
- Set the combination and test opening and closing the gate from both sides before storing supplies behind it.
The lock is the access control; the wire creates the hinge mechanism that lets the finished fence operate as a gate. Keep the combination private and avoid writing it on a sign near the entrance.

Watchtowers: what is known and what is not
Watchtowers can be built up to three levels and provide elevated observation and firing positions. A Watchtower Kit is the starting point, and stairs are built only while looking at that kit.

For stairs, have an axe, a hammer and the specified materials ready. Community guides disagree about exact material quantities: one guide reports four wooden logs per level, while other guides do not provide a matching count. Because the figures conflict, gather extra logs and verify the quantities shown by your current build prompts rather than relying on a fixed checklist.
Build each level only after the previous level is complete. Leave enough room around the tower to walk, carry materials and defend the approach; placing it tightly against another object can make prompts or stair access difficult.
Storage for a working base
Wooden crates
Wooden crates are craftable containers with 50 slots. A shovel can bury a crate, making it useful for a concealed cache away from your main structure. Burying a crate does not make it immune to server cleanup rules, so maintain it according to the server’s decay policy.
Barrels
Barrels are commonly found in industrial areas and hold 150 slots. Their larger capacity is useful for bulky building materials, but their size and appearance make them harder to hide than a buried crate.

Organize by purpose
- Keep nails, wire, locks and repair tools together so a raid or repair job does not require searching every container.
- Separate food, medical items and ammunition from construction stock; losing one category should not expose everything you own.
- Store a small emergency tool set outside the main compound so a damaged gate does not trap all of your repair equipment inside.
Choosing a defensible location
Location determines how often your base is seen and how quickly you can resupply it. No location is permanently safe, but you can reduce traffic and improve sustainment.
Prefer low-traffic terrain
- Stay away from the coast, major cities and prominent military bases, where players commonly travel for loot and encounters.
- Use forest cover to hide walls, towers and woodcutting activity. Avoid a conspicuous standalone compound visible from roads or open fields.
- Choose ground that is naturally level enough for kits and leaves more than one approach route; a single obvious entrance is easier to watch and raid.
Keep essential resources close
- Nearby water supports drinking and cooking, reducing repeated trips that reveal your route.
- Nearby forest supplies logs and sticks without forcing long, noisy carries across open ground.
- Check that you can reach industrial areas for nails and barrels without crossing a high-traffic route every time.
Use more than one cache
Do not concentrate every item in one building. A hidden backup stash, such as a buried crate away from the primary compound, preserves tools, food or ammunition if the main base is discovered. Multiple smaller caches also make a failed raid less catastrophic than losing one large stockpile.
Airlocks and raid-resistant layout
An airlock is a small intermediate space with two successive doors or gates. Enter the first section, close it, then open the second. This prevents an intruder who gets through the outer gate from immediately reaching all storage.
- Put your highest-value containers in an interior room rather than directly behind the first gate.
- Offset inner and outer gates so a player cannot attack both from the same position.
- Keep repair materials inside the defended area but maintain a small external emergency cache.
- Use sheet metal on the most exposed wooden sections when resources allow; do not spend all nails on cosmetic expansion before reinforcing the entrance.
- Build only as large as you can maintain. A sprawling compound consumes more nails, attracts attention and creates more surfaces that can be attacked.
Decay, maintenance and flag poles
Base-lifetime figures are community reports rather than a single guaranteed DayZ rule. The server owner can change persistence settings, and reports differ between official and community servers.

The safest conclusion is to treat 45 days, 90 days with a flag, 42 days and 43 days as competing community estimates—not promises. Ask the administrator for the actual cleanup configuration on a private server, and check current patch notes when the game changes.

What a flag pole is reported to do
The community wiki describes a raised flag as refreshing object lifetimes within a radius of 60 metres. A developer statement relayed in a Steam discussion is paraphrased as saying that the flag refreshes lifetimes in that radius and lowers with each refresh tick. A forum post reports a refresh every five days. None of those reports establishes a universal schedule for every server.
- Place storage containers within the reported 60-metre radius if you rely on the flag.
- The protection applies to items in a container; do not assume a loose item outside a container receives the same treatment.
- One player reported items outside the radius disappearing after eight hours. That is a single anecdote, not a confirmed timer.
- On official servers, regular interaction with items is reported as sufficient to keep them present even without a flag.
Because the reports conflict, physically visit important storage and interact with it rather than waiting for a timer. A flag pole is a maintenance aid, not a substitute for knowing the server’s rules.

The action names above are documented in PC-oriented guides. Console and Switch 2 control layouts were not verified, and button assignments can differ from PC prompts or from your custom bindings. On another platform, use the on-screen action wheel or interaction prompt, then map the equivalent actions for placing a kit, adding logs, building frames, attaching coverings and installing a gate.

Practical build checklist
- Scout a low-traffic, forested location with usable water nearby and a route to industrial loot.
- Prepare a hatchet or axe, shovel, saw, hammer, pliers and, when needed, a pickaxe or hoe.
- Collect rope, sticks, logs, planks, nails, wire, locks and optional sheet metal before placing the first kit.
- Craft and place a fence kit from two sticks and rope.
- Add two logs, build the lower and upper frames, then install wooden coverings with planks, nails and a hammer.
- Convert selected fences to gates with wire and pliers; install and test a combination lock.
- Add airlocks and interior storage rather than putting every container behind one entrance.
- Bury a 50-slot crate or establish a separate cache for emergency supplies.
- If using a watchtower, build up to three levels and verify material quantities from the live prompts.
- Maintain the build through regular visits, keep important containers inside the flag’s reported radius, and confirm decay rules with the server administrator.
Common mistakes and fixes
Running out of nails mid-wall
Stop expanding and search industrial zones and outhouses for nail boxes, which can contain 70 nails. Prioritize closing and reinforcing the entrance before adding extra rooms.

Building on unsuitable ground
If the kit will not level or a prompt disappears, move it to flatter ground and clear nearby obstructions. A shovel is needed for foundation work and log placement.
Locking yourself out
Test the gate from both sides immediately after setting the combination. Keep a spare tool set and an emergency cache outside the main gate, but do not place the combination where a passer-by can read it.
Trusting an unverified timer
Do not schedule a return based only on a 45-, 42- or 90-day number. Community servers can use different settings, and even community reports disagree. Ask the administrator and interact with valuable containers regularly.
Putting every resource in one room
Use airlocks, interior rooms and a separate buried crate. This limits what a raider can take if one gate or wall is breached.
