Most of Europe and the United Kingdom will turn clocks back on Sunday, October 25, 2026. Most of the United States and Canadian locations that still observe seasonal time changes will do so on Sunday, November 1, 2026. In the U.S. and observing Canadian locations, the local 2:00 a.m. daylight-time reading becomes 1:00 a.m. standard time, giving you an extra hour.

When do the clocks go back in 2026?

The date depends on where you live. Europe changes first, followed one week later by most of North America.

Region Date Local transition Standard-time result Important exceptions
Most of Europe Sunday, October 25, 2026 Summer time changes to standard time CEST (UTC+2) becomes CET (UTC+1) in Central European locations Rules can differ by country and territory; verify your city
United Kingdom Sunday, October 25, 2026 British Summer Time changes to standard time BST becomes GMT Confirm the rule for any overseas territory
Most U.S. locations Sunday, November 1, 2026 2:00 a.m. daylight time becomes 1:00 a.m. standard time EDT→EST, CDT→CST, MDT→MST or PDT→PST, depending on time zone Hawaii, most of Arizona and U.S. territories generally do not follow this transition
Canadian locations observing seasonal changes Sunday, November 1, 2026 2:00 a.m. daylight time becomes 1:00 a.m. standard time Daylight-time abbreviation changes to the local standard-time abbreviation Some jurisdictions have different or changing rules

How soon is the change?

Using October 16, 2026 as the reference date, Europe’s change is nine calendar days away. The U.S. and observing-Canada change is 16 calendar days away. Those intervals count calendar days, not a fixed number of hours between every location.

What exactly happens at the change?

The U.S. Naval Observatory states that “The time shift begins at 0200 local time on the date of the change.” In most U.S. locations, clocks display 1:59 a.m. daylight time, then move back to 1:00 a.m. standard time. The entire 1 a.m. hour occurs twice: once under daylight time and again under standard time.

The result is a 25-hour autumn day in the affected local schedule. You gain one hour compared with the previous night’s clock reading, although the exact transition display can vary in other countries and time zones. Europe’s change similarly moves clocks from summer-time offsets to standard-time offsets; for Central Europe that means UTC+2 to UTC+1.

Why Europe and North America change on different Sundays

Under the current European schedule, the autumn transition is the last Sunday in October, making October 25 the 2026 date. The current U.S. federal pattern uses the first Sunday in November for the end of daylight saving time, making November 1 the operative date. Canada generally follows the November transition in locations that continue seasonal clock changes, but Canadian rules are not uniform.

Which places do not change clocks?

Do not assume the U.S. November date applies nationwide. Hawaii, most of Arizona and U.S. territories generally remain on the same clock year-round. Canada also has jurisdictions that do not observe the standard seasonal change or are changing their rules. A city’s official time authority, calendar service or device time-zone database is the safest way to check.

These exceptions matter when scheduling calls, flights, broadcasts or software jobs across regions. A meeting planned between October 25 and November 1 can have a different time difference depending on whether one participant is in Europe and the other is in North America.

What to do before the clocks change

  1. Check your location rule. Confirm the city or territory rather than relying only on the country name, especially in Arizona, Canada and overseas territories.
  2. Leave automatic time enabled. On phones and computers, use the network-provided date, time and time-zone settings. Install pending operating-system updates so the device has current transition rules.
  3. Review recurring events. Calendar applications normally adjust time-zone-aware events automatically, but fixed-time entries, spreadsheets and manually entered reminders may not. Open important appointments scheduled around October 25 and November 1.
  4. Audit systems that run at 1 or 2 a.m. Backups, scripts, payroll jobs, monitoring alerts and reservations can run twice, be skipped, or need an explicit time-zone policy during the repeated hour. Prefer UTC for distributed systems and document the local-time conversion.
  5. Recheck cross-border appointments. Europe changes a week before most of North America, so verify the offset again after October 25 and before November 1.

What about proposals to change daylight-saving rules?

Current reporting describes proposals in the United States to make daylight time permanent. Those proposals do not change the scheduled 2026 calendar: the operative U.S. end date remains November 1, 2026 under the current federal pattern. Future legislation could alter later years, so use an official calendar when planning beyond 2026.
