The DAX, MDAX and SDAX are Germany’s rules-based stock-index tiers. The DAX contains 40 of the largest eligible companies, the MDAX contains the next 50, and the SDAX contains the next 70 smaller companies. The tiers are ranked mainly by free-float market capitalization, so they provide different slices of the German equity market rather than three competing versions of the same portfolio.
DAX is the core large-cap benchmark and represents around 80% of the market capitalization of listed stock corporations in Germany, according to Deutsche Börse’s 2026 explainer. MDAX adds mid-cap exposure, while SDAX reaches smaller listed companies. Membership can change at scheduled reviews or after extraordinary corporate events, so an index label describes a current rules-based selection, not a permanent club.
DAX, MDAX and SDAX at a glance
| Index | Market-cap tier | Constituents | Selection position | What an investor is primarily getting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DAX | Large cap | 40 | The largest eligible companies on the German stock market | A core German equity benchmark and broad large-cap representation |
| MDAX | Mid cap | 50 | The 50 largest eligible companies immediately below DAX constituents | Exposure to established medium-sized companies, with more membership turnover than DAX |
| SDAX | Small cap | 70 | The 70 eligible companies immediately below MDAX constituents | Smaller-company exposure and the highest observed turnover tendency of the three tiers |
The counts are index rules, not a ranking of quality. A company can move from one tier to another when its free-float market value changes, when it no longer meets eligibility conditions, or when an extraordinary event requires a replacement.
What each index measures
DAX: Germany’s large-cap benchmark
Deutsche Börse defines the DAX as the performance index for the 40 largest companies on the German stock market. Its constituents together represent around 80% of the market capitalization of listed stock corporations in Germany, a figure stated in Deutsche Börse’s 2026 explainer. That makes the DAX the most widely used single gauge of large German listed companies, but it is not the entire German market: hundreds of smaller companies sit outside the index.

MDAX: the 50 companies below DAX
MDAX is the second tier. It tracks the 50 largest companies by market capitalization that rank below DAX stocks and uses free-float weighting. In practical terms, it covers companies that are too small for DAX but large enough to rank above the SDAX universe, subject to the same broad eligibility framework. Its holdings can include businesses with substantial sales and international operations; “mid cap” describes their relative stock-market size, not necessarily a local or early-stage business.
SDAX: the next 70 smaller companies
SDAX is the third tier and comprises 70 Prime Standard companies ranking directly below MDAX by size. Inclusion is based on free-float market capitalization. Because the companies are smaller, individual additions, deletions and rank changes can have a more visible effect on the index’s composition than they do in the large-cap DAX.
How companies qualify and get ranked
The tiers are not selected by an editorial committee choosing favorite companies. Deutsche Börse applies published, rules-based criteria and an automated process intended to make selection transparent, objective and fact-based.
Free-float market capitalization is the central ranking measure
Free-float market capitalization is the company’s share price multiplied by the shares realistically available for public trading. Shares held by controlling owners, governments, strategic investors or other restricted holders may not count as free float. Ranking by free-float value means a company’s position reflects the size of its tradable equity rather than simply its total issued shares.

Eligibility conditions come before the ranking
A company must meet several conditions before it can be considered for the selection indices. Deutsche Börse’s current eligibility description includes:
- A listing on the regulated market.
- At least 10% free float.
- Continuous trading on Xetra.
- Minimum liquidity requirements.
- A minimum trading history.
- Financial-reporting obligations.
- Corporate-governance requirements.
Meeting these conditions does not guarantee inclusion. Eligible companies are then ranked, and the relevant size cutoffs determine which names occupy DAX, MDAX or SDAX places.
Free-float weighting affects index influence
Constituent weights are based on free-float market capitalization rather than assigning every company an equal share. A larger tradable market value generally gives a company a larger effect on an index’s movement, subject to the index’s weighting rules and any applicable limits. Therefore, counting constituents alone does not tell you how evenly an index’s value is distributed.

SDAX chaining dates
Deutsche Börse’s glossary notes that SDAX composition can change on each chaining date in March, June, September and December. “Chaining” is the process of connecting the old and new index composition so that a scheduled change does not create an artificial jump caused solely by replacing constituents.
Extraordinary substitutions
Scheduled reviews are not the only source of changes. Delistings, settlements, bankruptcies and new listings can trigger substitutions between reviews. A company can therefore leave an index even when the normal calendar has not arrived. Investors using an index-tracking product should check the provider’s notices when such events occur.
Deutsche Börse characterizes DAX as relatively stable, while MDAX and especially SDAX contain smaller companies that tend to move in and out more frequently. That is a statement about composition and turnover. It is not a promise that either smaller-company index will produce higher or lower returns.

Why smaller companies may fluctuate more
- Liquidity: Smaller companies may have fewer actively traded shares, so prices can react more sharply when investors buy or sell.
- Business concentration: A smaller company may depend more heavily on a limited number of products, customers or markets.
- Financing sensitivity: Companies with less scale can be more exposed to borrowing costs, refinancing conditions and economic slowdowns.
- Index turnover: More frequent entries and exits can change the portfolio’s sector and company mix.
Why DAX is not automatically “safe”
Large companies can still be cyclical, globally exposed, highly valued or affected by currency movements, regulation and industry disruption. The DAX also represents around 80% of German listed-stock market capitalization, so a decline in large German companies can affect the benchmark substantially. Large-cap status reduces some small-company risks; it does not remove equity-market risk or guarantee stable returns.
How to use the risk distinction
Treat DAX, MDAX and SDAX as exposure choices, not as a fixed risk ladder. Compare the actual product’s volatility, drawdowns, concentration, fees and tracking history, and match the exposure to your time horizon and ability to tolerate losses. The index name alone cannot establish a forward-looking return ranking.
Diversification: 40, 50 or 70 companies?
More constituents do not automatically mean better diversification. DAX has 40 companies, MDAX 50 and SDAX 70, but each index is weighted by free-float market capitalization. A handful of large constituents can therefore account for a significant share of an index’s movement, while sectors may be unevenly represented.

Within the German market, combining tiers can broaden the size exposure from large to small companies. That combination also introduces more holdings, different liquidity characteristics and potentially more turnover. It remains concentrated in one national equity market, however, and should not be mistaken for a globally diversified portfolio.

How investors can obtain exposure
You cannot buy an index directly because it is a calculation of securities. Exposure normally comes through a financial product whose objective is to track the index. Deutsche Börse states that the DAX is used as an underlying for exchange-traded funds, listed derivatives and structured products. Comparable products may also be available for MDAX and SDAX, but availability depends on your country, broker and the current product market.
Use this process before choosing a product
- Define the target exposure. Decide whether you want German large caps (DAX), the next mid-cap tier (MDAX), smaller companies (SDAX), or a combination.
- Confirm the exact index. Check whether the product follows the named price, performance or total-return version. “Tracking DAX” is not sufficient if the product documentation specifies a different return calculation.
- Check the legal and trading details. Verify the fund or note’s domicile, currency, exchange listing, distribution policy, trading hours and investor eligibility in your jurisdiction.
- Read the cost disclosure. Compare the ongoing fee, transaction costs, spread and any performance or structuring charges. A product’s headline fee does not capture every cost.
- Inspect the tracking method. Determine whether the product holds the constituents directly, uses sampling or relies on derivatives. Review collateral and counterparty provisions for derivative-based products.
- Review liquidity and size. Check typical trading volume, bid–ask spreads, assets and the issuer’s dealing arrangements. Liquidity can matter particularly for smaller-company exposure.
- Understand tax and currency treatment. The correct treatment depends on your residence, account type and the product’s domicile. Use the official prospectus and local tax guidance rather than assuming that all index products are taxed alike.
- Compare tracking results over time. Look for the difference between the product’s return and the index after costs, while remembering that past tracking does not guarantee future results.
Buying an index-tracking product is also different from buying every constituent yourself. The product handles rebalancing and corporate actions under its mandate, while direct ownership requires you to build, weight and maintain the portfolio and pay the trading costs yourself.
Which index may fit an investor’s objective?
| If your priority is… | Index to investigate first | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| A single large-cap gauge of Germany | DAX | It covers 40 companies and remains exposed to large-cap and national-market concentration. |
| Medium-sized listed companies | MDAX | Membership can change more often than in DAX, and mid-cap liquidity varies by constituent. |
| Smaller-company exposure | SDAX | It has 70 constituents but the highest observed turnover tendency among these tiers. |
| Broader size exposure within Germany | A combination of tiers | Combining indexes does not remove country, currency, sector or equity-market risk. |
This is an exposure framework, not personal investment advice. The appropriate choice depends on your portfolio’s existing holdings, time horizon, loss capacity, tax position and need for liquidity.

- Assuming SDAX must outperform DAX: Smaller-company exposure can lead or lag in different economic and market conditions.
- Treating the tiers as permanent: Review dates and extraordinary substitutions can change holdings.
- Confusing company size with business quality: Market capitalization determines the tier; it does not certify profitability, governance or valuation.
- Ignoring free float: Total shares outstanding are not the same as shares available to public investors.
- Comparing products by name only: Return type, fees, replication method, currency and domicile can materially change the investor experience.
- Using constituent counts as a complete diversification test: Free-float weighting and sector concentration still matter.
- Buying without checking jurisdiction: A product listed elsewhere may not be available, tax-efficient or suitable for your account.
How to monitor an investment after purchase
Review the product’s official notices around the March, June, September and December index dates, while paying particular attention to the DAX’s regular March and September reviews and its fast-entry and fast-exit checks in other quarter-end months. Confirm whether a change reflects a scheduled rebalancing or an extraordinary event such as a delisting or bankruptcy. Also monitor tracking difference, spread, costs and whether the product still provides the size exposure you intended.
The key distinction is straightforward: DAX is the large-cap tier of 40 companies, MDAX is the next 50, and SDAX is the next 70 smaller companies. Their rules, free-float weighting and review process create different exposures, but none of the three carries a guaranteed return or risk ranking.
