Dave the Diver pairs daytime diving and fishing with nighttime sushi-restaurant management. Subnautica is an open-world survival adventure: explore an alien ocean, gather resources, craft equipment, and build underwater bases while managing oxygen and other needs. Choose Dave the Diver for a varied, structured activity loop; choose Subnautica for survival-crafting progression and longer expeditions into a changing ocean.
How gameplay differs in Dave the Diver vs. Subnautica
Dave the Diver: dives supply the restaurant
Dave the Diver connects two complementary activities. During the day, you dive, fish, and make discoveries; at night, you run a sushi restaurant. What you find underwater feeds into the restaurant side of the loop, giving exploration a practical purpose beyond discovery. The Steam listing describes it as a single-player adventure RPG with character and story content, as well as fishing and restaurant management. Steam’s Dave the Diver listing presents those activities as the game’s central combination.
Subnautica: exploration depends on preparation
Subnautica places survival and exploration in an open ocean on an alien planet. Its Steam description spans shallow reefs and kelp forests to caves, trenches, and lava fields. You collect resources and craft diving gear, lights, habitat modules, and submersibles to support further exploration. The game’s store description also frames the crash, local life, and the planet as a mystery to investigate. Steam’s Subnautica listing describes the exploration, crafting, and survival systems.

Exploration: a two-part loop or an open ocean?
In Dave the Diver, exploration is organized around the day-and-night rhythm: diving and fishing lead into restaurant management. The two activities reinforce each other, so the appeal is in switching between them as much as in going underwater.

Subnautica is built around moving through a large ocean with distinct environments and deeper destinations. Progress depends on gathering materials and crafting equipment that can support more demanding trips. Returning to a base can serve practical needs, including storing resources, parking vehicles, and replenishing oxygen.
Survival: where pressure is part of the design
Subnautica explicitly asks players to manage oxygen and basic needs such as food and water, while dealing with hazards and resource constraints. Bases also require attention to hull integrity as depth and pressure increase. Survival logistics therefore shape how far and how long an expedition can go.

The official Dave the Diver summary foregrounds fishing, exploration, and restaurant management rather than a comparable survival framework. That makes the games’ underwater settings an imperfect guide to how they play: survival systems are central to Subnautica, while Dave the Diver uses diving as one half of a broader adventure-and-management loop.

- Pick Dave the Diver if you want fishing and underwater discoveries tied to a restaurant-management activity, with a structured alternation between the two.
- Pick Subnautica if you want to gather resources, craft gear and vehicles, manage survival needs, and build bases as you explore an open ocean.
- Consider your preferred pressure level. If oxygen, food, water, hazards, and preparation are part of the appeal, Subnautica’s described systems speak directly to that preference. If you would rather have restaurant management as a major counterpart to diving, Dave the Diver is the closer fit.

Platforms and purchase information
Both games have Steam listings, which establish Steam as a purchase route for PC copies. Nexon announced Dave the Diver’s Nintendo Switch launch in 2023.
