For a safer, more productive start in Dave the Diver, learn the controls in shallow water, follow the main missions, and treat oxygen as a budget for the entire trip—including the swim back. Bring home useful catches rather than filling your cargo without a plan, then build the sushi menu around ingredients you can reliably supply.

How the early-game loop works

You dive and gather during the day, then serve customers at Bancho Sushi at night. Early on, the main missions are a useful guide: progression unlocks systems such as staff, farming, the fish farm, weapon upgrades, and access to greater depths. Learn the basics in shallow water before taking on deeper routes or optional risks.

Each dive is a trade-off between what you can bring back and the resources needed to return safely. A catch is only useful if you can get it to the surface, and the restaurant can only sell dishes you can keep supplying.

Plan dives around oxygen, depth, and cargo

Keep oxygen for the return trip

Think of the oxygen meter as a return-trip budget, not time you can spend entirely collecting. Damage, fast swimming, and going beyond the suit’s safe depth can make your reserve run down faster. Decide when to turn back before you chase one more fish, and leave enough oxygen to ascend with your haul.

Check the suit’s depth limit

Before entering a deeper area, check the depth your current suit can safely handle. Do not treat deeper water as a worthwhile shortcut if your equipment is not ready for it. Missions and equipment upgrades provide a safer path to extending your range.

Use cargo space deliberately

If your cargo fills quickly, prioritize ingredients needed for dishes or progression, along with useful upgrade materials. Avoid spending limited space on whatever happens to be nearby. Upgrade cargo capacity when it is the constraint that most often cuts a dive short.

Choose catches for value, not just quantity

When deciding what to catch, weigh the fish’s star quality and meat yield against its weight, the effort required to capture it, and whether you need it for a recipe or unlock. An independent fan guide recommends favoring higher-star fish for meat and sale value relative to backpack weight, and using non-lethal capture tools when aiming for three-star catches. Treat that as a strategy suggestion, not a guaranteed rule for every situation.

Handle dangerous encounters conservatively

Do not turn every enemy encounter into a fight. Watch how an enemy behaves, use a tool suited to the situation, and retreat if the encounter threatens your oxygen or the haul. A newcomer guide advises prioritizing safety over marginal profit; that is especially sensible when a dive has already produced catches you want to bring back.

Upgrade the equipment that addresses your bottleneck

There is no single upgrade order that suits every dive. Guides differ on whether cargo or oxygen-related survival should come first, so use the problem you actually encounter most often to choose. Compare what an upgrade fixes, its resource cost, and whether a current mission depends on it.

Build a sushi menu you can keep stocked

At night, choose dishes based on ingredients you can reliably bring in or produce, rather than making the menu depend on a rare or risky catch. A fan guide suggests Parrotfish Sushi as an early option, but dish recommendations are strategy advice and can be version-sensitive; use it only if the ingredients and your current progress make it practical.

As the restaurant develops, compare dishes by ingredient reliability, how well the menu covers what you can supply, and the investment needed to improve them. Reinvest early profits in useful dishes and gear before spending heavily on décor. Staff choices matter as staff systems unlock; aim for a workable balance suited to the restaurant’s needs rather than assuming one fixed lineup is best for every stage.

A simple decision check before each dive

  1. Check your objective: follow the current mission or identify the ingredients and materials you want.
  2. Check your limits: confirm your suit’s safe depth and consider how much cargo space you have.
  3. Set a return point: turn back while you still have oxygen for the ascent, especially after taking damage or moving quickly.
  4. Choose catches selectively: favor useful, repeatable ingredients and high-value catches without ignoring weight or capture risk.
  5. Reassess after the dive: use the constraint that actually stopped you—oxygen, depth, cargo, or capture—to decide what to improve next.
