A dating app can introduce people through their projects and curiosities before showing photos or job titles. Crystal Chang’s Coffee Meets Codex prototype explored that idea at a Taipei hack day; its fictional previews and reported third-place finish make it an interesting design experiment, not evidence that the approach improves dating outcomes.
What the prototype put first
Chang describes Coffee Meets Codex as a dating-app concept that starts with “projects, curiosities, experiments” rather than a conventional profile-first introduction. The design changes the order of the first impression: a visitor encounters what someone makes or explores before seeing photos or job titles. Chang’s post does not establish that users preferred this sequence.
Intent was also meant to be explicit. The prototype presented Friend and Lover as separate choices, rather than treating friendship and romance as interchangeable. That is a stated feature of the concept, not evidence about how people would use it in practice.

Chang says the prototype was created at DevDay Exchange Community Hack Day: Taipei on October 4, 2026, with a few hours to build a working prototype and a one-minute demo. The reported stack was React 19 and Vinext, Cloudflare Workers and D1, and Sites-managed ChatGPT identity for authentication.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The post describes two separate surfaces: a public static showcase with no login, and a full app that required login. The showcase was deployed from showcase/ to docs/ on GitHub Pages, and included a demo film, fictional previews, and a link to the full app. These are the creator’s reported implementation details, not the result of an independent code or security audit.
What the demo did—and did not—demonstrate
The people and projects shown in the preview were fictional. The demo therefore illustrated a product idea; it did not show real participants matching, meeting, or forming relationships. Chang reports that profile and project links were supplied by their owners rather than scraped, and that the prototype included consent, withdrawal, and blocking controls. Those reported features do not amount to a verified safety assessment.

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Shown: a different profile introduction, separate Friend and Lover choices, fictional preview profiles, and reported consent and blocking controls.
- Not established: whether people trusted the approach, whether its controls worked as intended, or whether it led to better dating or friendship outcomes.
Chang also says the concept was limited to adults aged 18 and over. That is a reported prototype constraint, not proof of a complete age-assurance system.
What the hack-day result means
Chang reports that Coffee Meets Codex placed third in attendee voting. According to the post, checked-in attendees ranked teams on usefulness, creativity, and whether the demo convincingly worked. This is an author-reported event result, not an independently verified competition record or a measure of product-market fit.

The useful lesson is about communicating a prototype as much as building it. A working app may make sense to the people who built it, but outsiders need a clear path to understand the idea. Chang captured that reflection this way: “Shipping is not the moment the code works.”

If you are considering whether a project-first introduction would suit you, the key question is not whether the demo looked compelling. It is whether you would want your interests and creations to be the first material someone sees, and whether the product gives you meaningful control over what is shared.

- Trust: Would you trust meeting someone through their side projects? Chang poses this as a question to readers; the post does not report a general user response.
- Privacy: The reported owner-supplied links avoid scraping, but users would still need to understand what becomes visible and how to remove it.
- Intent: Separate friendship and romantic choices could make expectations clearer, though the prototype provides no evidence about real-world behavior.
- Safety: Consent, withdrawal, and blocking are relevant controls to look for, but their presence alone cannot establish that a service is safe.
Chang’s post says the project was not affiliated with OpenAI or Coffee Meets Bagel. Its strongest contribution is a concrete alternative for arranging a first impression—not proof that the alternative works better.
