Consumer drink-spiking tests cannot reliably establish that a drink is safe. They target only particular substances, and independent studies found important false-negative risks, including weak results for tests marketed for GHB and ketamine. A negative result should not be treated as proof that a drink is clear.
What a date rape drug sensor can—and cannot—detect
“Date rape drug sensor” is a common search term, but there is no single consumer device that detects every substance that could be used to spike a drink. The products evaluated in published studies were narrow tests for selected drugs, with results affected by the beverage and by how the test was used. The studies are evidence about the particular products and conditions tested—not a guarantee about every product currently sold.
Forensic researchers and public-health sources also use terms such as drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) and drink spiking. The important practical distinction is between a test that samples a beverage and laboratory toxicology that examines a person’s biological sample after an incident.
What independent evaluations found
| Study and test | What it evaluated | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| Beynon et al., 2006 | Drink Detective and Drink Guard quick kits, tested with selected drugs in water, cola, beer, and an alcopop | Overall sensitivity was 69.0% for Drink Detective and 37.5% for Drink Guard. Sensitivity varied by beverage; Drink Detective missed the study dose of GHB in water in all 20 scored results for that combination. |
| Quest and Horsley, 2007 | Drink Safe Technology Version 1.2 in laboratory conditions and consumer field use | Manufacturer-protocol laboratory accuracy was 100%. Across 101 paired consumer field results, sensitivity was 50%, specificity was 91.6%, and test efficiency was 65.1%. |
| Germain et al., 2023 | Coasters marketed to detect GHB and ketamine in beverages | At 150% of the stated detection limit in tested spiked matrices, ketamine sensitivity was 0%; GHB sensitivity was 31–69%, depending on how inconclusive results were classified. |
These numbers should not be combined into a ranking: the studies tested different products, targets, beverages, protocols, and conditions. They do show why a negative consumer result is not a dependable all-clear. The 2007 gap between laboratory and field results is especially relevant to products that require a user to interpret a color change.

Why the 2023 coaster findings matter
In the tested coaster, the GHB reagent was bromocresol green, which responds to pH above 5.5 rather than specifically identifying GHB. The ketamine reagent was cobalt thiocyanate, a non-specific colorimetric reagent. Given those limitations and the measured results, the authors concluded: “We conclude that these coasters are an inadequate tool to screen for GHB and ketamine in beverages.” This conclusion applies to the coasters and conditions they evaluated.
A research sensor is not the same as a retail safety product
A 2020 paper describes a single-use screen-printed electrochemical sensor in a dry-reagent format for flunitrazepam in whiskey, vodka, and gin. The laboratory-developed method used portable instrumentation and reported a sub-mg/L limit of quantification, relative error below 15% in the described sample experiments, and a total measurement time under 90 seconds. Its selectivity experiments included GHB, ketamine, and scopolamine, but the sensor’s target was flunitrazepam. The paper describes a research method, not a verified consumer product or a broad-spectrum drink-spiking detector. Read the study in Sensors.

Drink testing and post-incident toxicology answer different questions
A beverage test attempts to identify a target substance in the drink sample. Toxicology testing after a suspected incident instead analyzes biological samples, such as urine or hair, using laboratory methods. A coaster result cannot substitute for that testing or establish what happened to a person.
An NIJ-sponsored 2001 report described methods for flunitrazepam and related compounds. In that study, a micro-plate immunoassay detected related compounds in urine at least up to five days after a single dose under the reported conditions; a confirmatory method detected the metabolite 7-aminoflunitrazepam in urine 14 days after a single dose, and the metabolite was reported in hair for at least one month. These are findings from specific historical assays and study conditions, not guaranteed detection windows for every drug, dose, person, or current clinical test. Read the NIJ/OJP report.

The U.S. FDA says it regulates certain in-vitro diagnostic tests sold to consumers or healthcare professionals, and that many are reviewed before sale, including for design, performance, and instructions. Its general Drugs of Abuse Tests page points to databases for cleared tests. That page does not establish that a particular beverage coaster or drink-spiking test is FDA-cleared. Check the exact product and its intended use in the relevant FDA database before relying on a clearance claim.

What to do if you suspect a drink was spiked
- Stop drinking it and move to a place where you feel safe; contact a trusted person or venue staff for help.
- If someone feels unwell, unusually drowsy, confused, or unsafe, seek urgent medical help or contact local emergency services. Do not wait for a coaster result.
- If an incident may have occurred, tell medical professionals what you suspect and ask about timely toxicology testing. The substances and detection windows differ, and a consumer drink test does not diagnose exposure.
