Dataprompt is a software framework for organizing AI prompts in .prompt files. It brings prompt text, route structure, data retrieval, output schemas and follow-up actions into a file-oriented workflow. The project README labels it Alpha, so treat its documented features as a starting point for evaluation—not proof of production readiness.

What Dataprompt is—and what it is not

Dataprompt is a framework for managing AI prompts in software projects. It is not a general-purpose prompting technique or a physical product. The project README describes it as “a metaframework for prompt files, combining the power of prompt engineering with file-based routing.”

The idea first appeared in Bytes issue #368, published February 18, 2025, as a way to keep a prompt and the behavior around it together. The issue compared the approach to single-file components and file-based routing; those are explanatory analogies, not evidence that Dataprompt is equivalent to any particular web framework.

Dataprompt calls its files “Single File Prompts.” A .prompt file can contain prompt content and configuration, including a model declaration, external data sources, an output schema and actions to take with the result.

How a prompt file can fit into an application

Fetch data and interpolate it

A prompt can declare external sources whose returned data is made available to the prompt. The Bytes issue’s example retrieves two Hacker News pages and supplies their JSON to an analysis prompt. This illustrates the intended workflow; it does not establish that every integration is production-hardened.

Shape and act on the generated result

The README documents structured results using Zod schemas and result actions for generated output. It also describes custom plugins. The issue’s example sends generated output to Firestore, showing how a prompt file can represent a post-generation step as well as the request itself.

Organize files as routes

Dataprompt uses file-based routing. In the issue’s example, /prompts/hn/[a]/[b].prompt corresponds to a URL such as /hn/1/2. This is an example of the route pattern, not a guarantee about the behavior or reliability of every deployment.

Schedule execution

The README documents scheduled triggers using node-cron. It says scheduled tasks are the currently supported trigger type and that schedules operate independently of file-based routing.

Ways to use Dataprompt

Path What the project documents
Development server An optional server that serves prompts as a JSON API.
JavaScript API An embeddable API for using Dataprompt inside an existing application without running its server.

The README’s documented setup installs the dataprompt and genkit npm packages, creates a starter project with the CLI, and runs a development server. These are project-documented steps, not independently verified setup results.

Model-provider configuration

The README describes Google AI models as the out-of-the-box provider path. It says other providers can be configured with Genkit plugins. Genkit is an open-source framework for building agentic applications, but provider-plugin availability does not establish that every plugin works with every Dataprompt feature. Treat alternative-provider support as configurable rather than universally validated.

What to assess before relying on it

The README labels Dataprompt Alpha. That maturity label matters if you are considering it for an application: the available documentation describes capabilities and setup, but does not establish production readiness, maintenance cadence, compatibility across dependencies and providers, security review, performance or reliability.

Those unknowns are not evidence that the project fails in any of these areas; they mean the documentation cited here does not settle them. Before adopting it, check whether the features you need work with your chosen provider and application, and decide whether an Alpha project’s maturity is appropriate for your use case.

Where Dataprompt’s design may fit

Its documented design is most relevant if you want prompts, route organization, data fetching, structured output and post-generation behavior managed together in a JavaScript-oriented workflow. The development server offers a JSON API path, while the JavaScript API offers an embedding path. Scheduled triggers are a separate documented capability.

The sources provide no direct benchmark or comparative study, so they do not support ranking Dataprompt against other prompt frameworks. A practical evaluation should focus on whether its file organization, routing, source handling, Zod-based output schemas, actions, scheduling and provider configuration match the needs of your own application.
