DataFix is a browser-based cleaner for tabular files that may mix regional text encodings, number and date conventions, and inconsistent values. Its creator describes a workflow that processes files locally in the browser, with support for XLSX, CSV, TSV, and JSON. The project’s documentation also makes an important distinction: its initial XLSX workflow cleans worksheet values, not complete formatted workbooks.
What kinds of spreadsheet mess is DataFix meant to address?
In an announcement posted August 20, 2026, creator Mickey Chen framed the problem this way: “Ever opened a spreadsheet and found Big5, Shift-JIS, 1.234,50, ROC dates, full-width characters and NULL all mixed together?” That is the project’s motivating example, not evidence that these problems occur at any particular rate.
These examples represent different cleanup jobs. Big5 and Shift-JIS are text encodings; 1.234,50 uses a decimal comma and a period as a thousands separator; ROC dates use the Republic of China calendar; full-width characters can make visually similar text differ at the character level; and NULL is one of many markers that may represent missing data. DataFix’s stated goal is to help normalize such values in tabular files rather than require manual edits cell by cell.

It also lists full-width character conversion, whitespace trimming, common missing-value normalization, and repair of empty or duplicate column names. How does the documented cleaning workflow work?
The README describes importing an XLSX file in the browser, switching between its worksheets, and reviewing the original data alongside a cleaned preview with changes highlighted. DataFix also infers whether columns contain text, numbers, dates, or email addresses. The documentation lists exports for a selected cleaned worksheet as XLSX, and for cleaned data as UTF-8 CSV or JSON.
The project lists English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese interface languages. Its feature list describes automatic cleanup and preview, but does not establish that users can edit per-column cleaning rules or save reusable cleanup profiles. Those capabilities appear as roadmap priorities, not documented shipped features.

What does “local-first” mean here?
The README says, “Your data stays on your device. Parsing, cleaning, previewing and exporting happen locally in the browser.” It also says the project does not provide a file-upload API and is designed so source data need not leave the device. These are statements from the project, not an independent security guarantee: the reviewed materials do not include an audit of the live deployment, browser behavior, telemetry, or security controls.
For bug reports, use synthetic examples rather than real personal, confidential, or credential-bearing data; the README specifically cautions against uploading sensitive files. Local processing can reduce the need to send a source file to a service, but it does not by itself establish the security of a browser, device, or deployed site.

What are the XLSX limitations?
DataFix’s initial XLSX implementation is intended for tabular values, not lossless workbook editing. You can select a worksheet and export its cleaned data to a new XLSX file, but workbook styling is not preserved. The tool also does not evaluate formulas itself: it uses cached or displayed values when present. If you need to retain formatting, workbook structure, or formula recalculation, this documented workflow may not meet that requirement.
Who is DataFix a good fit for?
- Consider it when you need to clean tabular values affected by mixed regional date or number conventions, encoding issues, inconsistent missing-value markers, or untidy headers.
- Check the file requirements first if the workbook depends on formatting or formula recalculation, since neither is preserved or performed by the initial XLSX implementation described in the README.
- Verify privacy needs independently when handling sensitive information. The local-first design and absence of a file-upload API are project claims, not an independent assessment of the live service.
The documentation also names editable column rules, duplicate detection and merge suggestions, reusable profiles, richer workbook preservation, a CLI and npm library, and additional regional fixtures as roadmap priorities. Treat these as plans rather than available features.

Can you run DataFix locally?
The README’s local development instructions require Node.js 22.13 or newer and describe cloning the repository, installing packages, and starting a development server. It also lists build, test, lint, and Cloudflare Workers deployment commands. These are the project’s instructions; they are not independent confirmation that every command works in every environment. Consult the README for the current commands and prerequisites, as repository documentation can change.
What is established—and what is not?
The creator’s announcement and project README document a concrete feature set for cleaning regional text, dates, numbers, missing values, and headers, with browser-local processing described by the project. The reviewed sources do not provide adoption figures, measured time savings, quantified effectiveness, or an independent security assessment. Whether it is suitable for a particular file therefore depends chiefly on its cleanup needs and whether its XLSX limitations fit the workflow.
