When a popular cache entry expires, many callers can see the same miss at once and independently run the same expensive loader. The cache stops absorbing requests just as redundant queries hit the database. AWS calls this dog piling or the “thundering herd” effect; Redis and Cloudflare describe the same expiry-driven pattern. The right fix depends on whether you need to collapse duplicate loads, stagger expirations, refresh before expiry, or serve bounded stale content while revalidation runs.
What causes a cache stampede?
A stampede is a concurrency and freshness problem, not simply high request volume. When a hot key is absent or stale, simultaneous callers may all load the same underlying data and overwrite the cache with redundant results. AWS describes the effect as many processes receiving a miss for one key and hitting the same database query in parallel (AWS Caching Best Practices). Redis documentation puts the consequence plainly: “Without coordination, all of them would query the primary and overwrite the cache redundantly — a cache stampede” (Redis cache-aside documentation).
Four controls address different parts of the problem. Request coalescing makes callers share one load for a key. TTL jitter spreads expiry times across keys. Probabilistic early refresh can start regeneration before a deadline. HTTP stale-serving directives can keep eligible responses available while a cache revalidates. None is a universal performance guarantee; choose based on where the herd forms and what freshness your application permits.
1. Coalesce misses for a hot key
Arrange for one request to regenerate a missing value while concurrent requests for that key await its result, poll briefly, or receive a deliberately designed fallback. This directly reduces duplicate backend loads for the hot key, but it changes the waiting path: callers may block, and the loader may be slow or fail.

Using a short-lived lock safely
One implementation pattern in Redis’s Rust cache-aside documentation uses an atomic SET NX PX operation to acquire a short-lived lock. The lock includes a unique owner value; release it only if the value still identifies the caller as owner. Otherwise, a lock that expired and was acquired by another worker could be deleted by the earlier worker. See the Redis example and its cache-aside documentation, which also discusses Lua scripting for atomic lock or probabilistic refresh operations.
Decide what happens while loading
- Set a wait or polling limit so callers do not wait indefinitely.
- Define the response when the loader fails or exceeds that limit, such as an allowed stale value or a controlled error.
- Choose a lock lifetime that accounts for loader duration and decide how to handle a loader that outlives its lock.
- Ensure the locking mechanism and fallback still behave correctly when workers fail or coordination is unavailable.
The Redis example demonstrates an implementation pattern; it is not a universal guarantee or an independent benchmark.
2. Add TTL jitter to stagger expirations
Randomize expiration times so entries created around the same time do not all expire together. Redis describes jitter as a way to spread expirations and reduce a wave of misses (Redis cache-aside guidance; Redis discussion of cache pressure).
Jitter is aimed at synchronized expiry across many keys. It does not make concurrent misses for one hot key collapse into a single database load. If one key is the source of the spike, pair jitter with a per-key approach such as request coalescing.

3. Refresh probabilistically before hard expiry
Probabilistic early expiration gives requests a rising chance of starting a refresh as a cached item approaches its expiry time. Cloudflare demonstrates an exponential probability based on remaining cache time in a Worker image-service example; its pattern avoids synchronized refreshes without adding a coordination component in that scenario (Cloudflare engineering article). Redis also describes XFetch as a way to refresh early without process coordination (Redis cache-aside guidance).
Probabilistic refresh spreads work; it does not guarantee a refresh before expiry. Cloudflare notes that its example does not imply a 100% chance of refresh for every request rate. Plan for hard expiry as well: decide whether callers then wait, use another fallback, or load the value. Set parameters for your traffic and refresh cost rather than treating an example’s illustrative values as universal defaults.

4. Serve stale HTTP responses during revalidation
For cacheable HTTP responses, stale-while-revalidate can let a cache serve an existing stale response while fetching a fresh version asynchronously. stale-if-error defines a separate stale-serving window when the origin errors; CloudFront documents that the directives can be used together (CloudFront expiration and stale-content behavior; Cloudflare revalidation documentation; Cloudflare Cache-Control documentation).

Which fix fits the spike?
| Observed problem | Relevant control | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Many callers miss on one popular key | Per-key request coalescing or a safely managed lock | Suppresses duplicate loads, but callers need a defined wait and failure path. |
| Many keys expire together | TTL jitter | Staggers expirations, but does not collapse concurrent misses for one key. |
| A high-volume item can refresh before its deadline | Probabilistic early refresh | Can spread refresh work without a coordinator in the cited pattern, but timing is probabilistic and hard-expiry behavior still matters. |
| An HTTP response may be served stale for a bounded period | stale-while-revalidate and, where appropriate, stale-if-error |
Maintains availability within the configured freshness policy, but applies to HTTP/cache behavior rather than application-worker coordination. |
Start by determining whether the spike comes from one hot key or many synchronized expirations, then choose a control at the layer that owns the cache. Coalescing directly targets duplicate loads for one key; jitter addresses expiry waves across keys. Consider early refresh when refresh can happen before the deadline, and stale HTTP serving when the response can safely be a little old. Combining controls may be reasonable, but no universal ranking or optimal combination is established by the cited guidance.
