A database’s current state shows the values stored now; it does not, by itself, show who changed them, when the change happened, or what steps led to it. For that, you need an audit trail: a protected, reviewable record of selected events and their context. An audit trail can help reconstruct activity, but it is only evidence of what the system recorded—not a guaranteed, complete history of everything that occurred.

What a database audit trail tells you

NIST defines an audit trail as a chronological record used to reconstruct and examine activities surrounding a security-relevant operation or event. In practical terms, it answers questions that a current-state query cannot: which events were recorded, when they occurred, who or what was associated with them, and whether they succeeded.

The word “recorded” matters. An audit trail can support accountability, monitoring, and investigation, but its completeness depends on which events were selected, whether collection worked, and whether records were protected. It does not prove that every action was captured, prevent an unauthorized change, or guarantee recovery.

NIST’s Audit trail glossary entry attributes its definition to CNSSI 4009-2022.

What useful audit records contain

NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3 identifies six core categories for audit-record content. Include enough context to support the investigation or operational review the log is meant to serve:

  • Event type: What happened, such as a read, data change, privilege operation, or schema change.
  • Time: When the event occurred. Timestamp precision and consistency affect how well events can be ordered and correlated.
  • Location: Where the event originated or took place, as applicable.
  • Source: The user, process, service, or other origin involved.
  • Outcome: Whether the event succeeded or failed, plus any event-specific result needed to understand it.
  • Associated identities: The identities relevant to the event, such as the account that initiated it or the account affected.

Additional details—such as addresses, process identifiers, event descriptions, file or object names, and the access-control rule invoked—can make a record more useful. Capture before-and-after values when they are needed to explain a change, but account for the sensitivity and volume of that data.

NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3 addresses audit event selection, record content, generation and retention, failure response, and review. The OWASP Logging Cheat Sheet also discusses event attributes, protection, monitoring, and disposal.

How an audit trail differs from current state and transaction logs

These mechanisms answer related but different questions. A current-state query tells you what values are present now. A transaction or operational log records activity for its own operational purpose; its contents, retention, and accessibility depend on the database and its configuration. An audit facility is configured to capture selected events and context for examination.

Mechanism What it can help answer Important qualification
Current-state query What values are stored now? It does not, by itself, reconstruct the sequence that produced those values.
Transaction or operational log What activity did the database record for operational purposes? Do not assume every transaction log is an audit trail or is retained and structured for investigation.
Row-history trigger What selected row-level inserts, updates, or deletes were recorded, and what old or new values did the trigger capture? Coverage and trust depend on trigger configuration, transaction behavior, and who can alter the database records.
Dedicated audit facility Which configured event classes and associated details were logged? Coverage depends on configuration, collection health, storage, access controls, and review.

pgAudit describes the distinction this way: “The standard logging facility shows what the user requested, while pgAudit focuses on the details of what happened while the database was satisfying the request.” That is a useful contrast, not a claim that one log automatically captures every relevant event. See the pgAudit project documentation for its supported capabilities and configuration.

Choose what to log based on the questions you need to answer

Start with security and operational risks, then decide which event classes and details support detection or investigation. Depending on the system, relevant classes may include reads, writes, privilege changes, schema changes, function calls, and administrative actions. Logging everything without a defined purpose can create noise, performance costs, and unnecessary sensitive-data collection.

For each event class, decide what evidence is needed: actor, target, timestamp, outcome, and—where justified—before-and-after data. Then assess the complete design, not just the name of the logging feature:

  • Coverage: Which reads, writes, privilege changes, schema operations, and other events are captured? Which are not?
  • Attribution and detail: Can a reviewer identify the source, affected object, result, and relevant old or new values?
  • Transaction behavior: Do records persist if the surrounding transaction rolls back, and is that behavior suitable for the investigation?
  • Resistance to tampering: Can an administrator, owner, or privileged account alter or delete the evidence?
  • Storage and access: Where are records kept, who can read them, and who can change or remove them?
  • Collection health and response: How will failures, capture errors, or exhausted storage be detected and handled?
  • Review and lifecycle: Who reviews events, how are alerts routed, and what retention and disposal rules apply?
  • Operational impact: What are the likely costs in performance, storage, review workload, and exposure of sensitive information?

Logging requirements should be revisited as risks and system needs change. There is no single event set or mechanism that suits every database.

Protect, review, and retain the records

Audit records are security-relevant and may contain sensitive information. Restrict reading, modification, and deletion to authorized roles. Where appropriate, mask, sanitize, hash, or encrypt sensitive fields. Consider storage separation and access controls that make it harder for the same account that changes application data to alter its audit evidence.

Collection must be monitored as well as events. Define how the responsible team will learn about capture errors or storage exhaustion, and what action follows. Arrange regular review, alerting for events that warrant prompt attention, and correlation across relevant repositories. Set retention and disposal rules for the applicable legal, regulatory, contractual, and records-management context; there is no universal retention period established here.

These controls make evidence more useful, but they do not transform it into a guarantee of detection or compliance. Logging is one part of a broader security and operational process.

PostgreSQL example: pgAudit and row-change triggers

PostgreSQL illustrates why it is important to match the mechanism to the question. pgAudit provides session and object audit logging through PostgreSQL’s standard logging facility. Its documented statement classes include reads, writes, function calls, role and privilege operations, DDL, and miscellaneous commands.

Setup is version- and configuration-dependent: pgAudit must be loaded through shared_preload_libraries, and the extension must be created before setting pgaudit.log for proper functionality. Follow the documentation matching the PostgreSQL and pgAudit versions actually deployed, and verify which classes and objects your configuration covers. The pgAudit project documentation describes its configuration and statement classes.

A trigger is a different option when the goal is to keep selected row-change history. The PostgreSQL Wiki’s Audit trigger example records old and new row data, table, user, action, and timestamp for inserts, updates, and deletes. Its stated limitations are consequential: it does not capture SELECT, does not audit system catalog changes, and cannot securely track actions by superusers or owners who can tamper with in-database records. Its timestamp behavior also depends on transaction timing.

Use a trigger when row-level change records meet the need, not as a substitute for broader event auditing. Use an audit facility when its event coverage and details fit the questions you need to investigate. Neither mechanism is inherently complete or tamper-proof; evaluate rollback behavior, storage separation, access, failure monitoring, review, performance, and data minimization for the actual deployment.
