“Free” does not tell you whether a data grid can be used in a production app. It may mean a trial, a development-only license, an open-source community edition, or a service plan capped by usage. Before building around a free offer, check what it permits, where the grid may run, which features and support it includes, how use is measured, and what happens when a trial or paid term ends.

What does “free” mean for a data grid?

A data grid’s free offer can have very different boundaries. Some products let you evaluate the software but require a paid license before shipping it. Others are free during development but require a license for specified production domains. A community edition may permit commercial use while reserving particular features for paid tiers. A hosted service may instead provide a free monthly usage allowance.

These are separate licensing models, not interchangeable definitions. The word “free” by itself does not establish commercial or production rights.

Can you use the free edition in production?

Look for explicit license language about production, commercial use, and distributing an application that includes the grid. For example, DataGridXL describes free use as evaluation for non-production prototypes; its annual commercial subscription covers production use for one licensed product and named frontend developer seats. Its pricing page displayed EUR 999 per year for one seat when accessed in 2026; confirm the current price before purchasing. DataGridXL pricing

Data Recovery Stick for Windows Data Recovery Software – Photos, Files
  • The Data Recovery Stick requires no technical skills — simply plug it into your Windows computer, click Start, and the software automatically begins scanning and recovering lost files within minutes. Compatible with Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, & 11, it's designed to be a reliable first step when accidental deletion occurs.
  • Recover photos (JPG, BMP, PNG, TIFF), Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access), Open Office files, MP3 music files, PDFs, RTF documents, AutoCAD files, and HTML web pages. • No Installation Required - The Data Recovery Stick runs entirely from the USB drive with no software installation on your computer — helping prevent new data from overwriting the files you're trying to recover. This also makes it ideal for use across multiple computers or in emergency situations where installation isn't practical.
  • Use the Data Recovery Stick on as many computers as often as needed — simply clear the recovered data between uses to free up storage space. Software updates keep the tool compatible with newer systems and devices, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.

By contrast, SvGrid describes its Community edition as MIT-licensed and free for commercial use. That does not mean every capability is included: its paid tiers add features. Read the actual license and the edition’s feature list rather than inferring rights from the word “community.” SvGrid pricing

Does free development mean free deployment?

Not always. A vendor can allow local development while licensing use on the domains where the application is deployed. Lattice Grid says localhost use is free without a time limit, while deployment on named domains requires a license. Its page says staging, preview, QA, and CI can run with a watermark and without a key, and describes its licensing model as based on hostname or domain. The page displayed $1,000 for one named domain and $2,500 for three domains, including one year of support. These are vendor-listed prices, last updated 20 August 2026. Lattice Grid pricing

Lattice Grid says, “No feature is held back, because there is only one edition.” That describes its own product’s packaging; it should not be assumed to apply to other grids.

Are features withheld from the free edition?

Some products use feature tiers rather than deployment licenses. SvGrid lists sorting, filtering, grouping, virtualization, and editing among the Community edition’s capabilities. Its pricing page lists Enterprise at $599 per developer and Enterprise Suite at $999 per developer. Enterprise adds capabilities including server-side row model, export and import, pivot, Kanban and scheduler views, and support; the Suite adds spreadsheet and visual-design capabilities. These are vendor-stated prices and packaging, not an independent assessment. SvGrid pricing

When comparing tiers, identify the specific feature your application needs and check whether it is available in the edition you are licensed to use. A feature list can also distinguish a true free edition from a trial that temporarily unlocks paid functionality.

Is “free” actually a usage allowance?

For a hosted product, free may mean a monthly quota rather than an unrestricted software license. Datagrid AI’s pricing page lists a $0 Free plan and a Pro plan at $90 per month with 1,000 credits. Its help documentation separately says Free provides 500 credits per month, so the vendor’s official pages conflict. Do not rely on either figure as the current free allowance without confirming it with the vendor. Datagrid pricing · Datagrid pricing help

Check what counts toward a quota, whether it resets monthly, and what happens when it is exhausted. A stated credit allowance is useful only if you understand how the service measures usage.

What support and service commitments come with the free tier?

Free access may come without support, warranty, or uptime commitments. As a general SaaS example—not a data-grid library established as the product meant by this topic—Diagrid describes its free tier as a multi-tenant sandbox for development, evaluation, and non-critical workloads. Its terms say the tier is provided “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE,” without warranty, indemnity, support, or a service-level commitment. That is Diagrid’s contract language, not a standard rule for all free plans. Diagrid terms

Before relying on a free plan for an important application, check whether it includes a support channel, a response commitment, or any warranty. Do not assume those protections carry over from a vendor’s paid plans.

How is a free edition different from a trial?

A trial is time-limited access, not necessarily an ongoing free edition. JetBrains’ DataGrip documentation lists a 30-day trial, a paid commercial subscription, and complimentary access for eligible users. Its FAQ says DataGrip has no Community edition because its functionality is not divided into free and paid tiers. DataGrip is a database IDE, rather than a data-grid library, so it is a useful contrast in how a vendor can offer a trial without a separate free edition. JetBrains DataGrip licensing and subscriptions · JetBrains DataGrip FAQ and purchase options

Trial terms matter too. Diagrid’s terms list a 14-day free trial. They also say a paid deployment trial can convert automatically if a payment method or marketplace entitlement is supplied and the customer does not cancel. Whether that applies depends on checkout and the trial selected, so read the applicable terms before starting. Diagrid terms

What to check before choosing an edition

  • Use rights: Is the offer for evaluation only, personal or non-commercial use, open-source use under stated conditions, or commercial production?
  • Deployment boundary: Does the license cover your local machine, staging and CI, named domains, on-premises installation, or a hosted service?
  • Feature boundary: Are paid capabilities locked by edition, or does the vendor sell deployment rights to a single feature set?
  • Metering: Are you charged by developer seat, domain or hostname, monthly credits, or another quota?
  • Support: Does the free tier include support, warranty, or a service-level commitment, or are these paid benefits?
  • Term and exit: When does a trial expire? Does a subscription renew or convert automatically? What happens to existing deployments, updates, and support when a paid term ends?

Check the current license, pricing page, and terms for the exact product and edition you plan to use. Vendor prices and terms can change, and similar product names do not establish that two offers have the same license model.
