A data-centre UPS and a generator solve different parts of a power failure. The UPS responds immediately, conditioning electricity and supplying batteries while a generator starts and an automatic transfer switch changes the source. Batteries determine how many minutes the UPS can carry the load; the generator determines how long the site can operate, subject to fuel, cooling, emissions, maintenance and replenishment. Reliable design therefore treats UPS equipment, batteries, transfer equipment and generators as one coordinated power chain rather than as interchangeable products.

What each part of the backup-power chain does

UPS: immediate, conditioned power

A data-centre UPS supplies power during the instant utility electricity fails or moves outside acceptable voltage and frequency limits. It also provides voltage regulation and surge protection. Schneider Electric identifies online double-conversion UPS systems as the appropriate choice for data-centre and other critical-infrastructure loads because the inverter continuously supplies the load and isolates it from grid instability.

In an online double-conversion design, incoming AC power is converted to DC and then reconstructed as clean AC by the inverter. The load therefore does not wait for a relay to detect an outage and switch modes. Schneider Electric describes this arrangement as continuously running devices from the inverter and isolating them from grid fluctuations. That behavior is why it is used where even a brief disturbance can reset equipment or corrupt a transaction.

Batteries: stored energy, not a duration guarantee

Batteries are the UPS’s energy store. Smaller systems may place batteries in the UPS frame; higher-power installations commonly use dedicated external battery cabinets. Runtime is determined by the battery capacity, the connected load and the UPS’s operating limits. Adding load reduces the available minutes, while an external battery module extends runtime only when it is compatible with the specific UPS model and its control system.

Battery age, temperature, chemistry, charging settings and discharge history also affect usable capacity. A runtime shown on a vendor chart is therefore a value for a defined load and battery configuration, not a promise that every installation will achieve the same result. Monitoring and planned replacement matter as much as the initial ampere-hour rating.

Generators: sustained energy after the transfer

A generator supplies energy for an outage that lasts longer than the UPS batteries can support. It does not replace the UPS. The UPS carries the load while the generator starts, reaches stable voltage and frequency, and the automatic transfer equipment changes the source. Once the generator is feeding the bus, the UPS can recharge its batteries and continue conditioning the power.

Real endurance depends on fuel type and storage, fuel quality, replenishment contracts, emissions permits, cooling, acoustic controls, maintenance and the actual load profile. A generator rated for a certain number of hours at a specified load cannot be treated as an unlimited supply without confirming those site constraints.

How the three layers work during an outage

The normal sequence is designed to keep critical equipment online while each layer performs its role:

  1. Utility disturbance: The UPS detects a loss or unacceptable change in the incoming supply. An online double-conversion UPS continues feeding the load through its inverter.
  2. Battery discharge: The battery system supplies DC energy to the inverter. The available runtime falls as the connected watts increase.
  3. Generator start: Automatic controls start the standby generator and verify that its output is within the required voltage and frequency window.
  4. Source transfer: An automatic transfer switch or related transfer equipment moves the load to the generator. The UPS bridges this interval and filters the generator output.
  5. Return and recharge: When utility power is stable again, controls transfer the load back according to the site’s sequence, and the UPS recharges the batteries under supervision.

A failure in any layer can defeat the intended resilience. For example, a large fuel tank does not help if the transfer switch fails to operate, and a high-capacity UPS cannot sustain a long outage if its battery cabinets are degraded or inaccessible for service.

UPS versus generator: the practical difference

Characteristic UPS Generator
Primary job Immediate ride-through, voltage regulation and surge protection Long-duration energy during an extended utility outage
Energy source Stored electrical energy in batteries Fuel converted to electricity by an engine or other generator technology
Response Immediate; an online inverter already feeds the load Requires starting, stabilization and transfer of the source
Typical duration limit Set by battery capacity, load, temperature and battery condition Set by fuel storage, replenishment, maintenance and operating conditions
Power quality role Conditions the load continuously in an online double-conversion design Must be coordinated with the UPS and transfer equipment; output quality varies by design and loading
What happens if it is omitted Equipment can drop during generator start or source transfer Battery runtime ends during a long outage

The two systems are complementary. A site that installs only a generator has a transfer gap; a site that installs only batteries has a finite outage duration.

How long will a data-centre UPS last?

There is no single standard runtime. The correct answer is the runtime at a stated load, with a specified battery configuration and battery condition. A UPS sized for 100 kW can provide very different minutes at 20 kW, 80 kW or its maximum supported load. Adding a compatible external battery cabinet can increase runtime, but it does not automatically increase the UPS’s output-power rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define the ride-through objective before choosing batteries:

  • Generator ride-through: Keep the load online only long enough for the generator to start and transfer.
  • Short-disturbance ride-through: Cover brief utility events without starting a generator.
  • Graceful shutdown: Provide enough time for servers, storage and controls to shut down in an orderly way if no generator is available or the outage exceeds the planned duration.

Ask the UPS supplier for a runtime curve or calculator tied to the exact model, battery cabinet, temperature and load. Verify the result during commissioning rather than treating a nominal battery rating as a measured guarantee. Battery monitoring should identify weak strings or cells before an outage exposes the problem.

How to size a UPS for a data centre

Final sizing and protection coordination require a qualified electrical engineer. Schneider Electric’s guidance emphasizes that UPS watt capacity must exceed the connected watt load and distinguishes watts from apparent power (VA), while also considering power factor, runtime, automatic voltage regulation, surge protection, remote monitoring and scalable batteries. Use this sequence to develop the design basis:

  1. Measure the real load. Record watts and VA for servers, storage, networking, cooling controls and other protected equipment. Use measured operating data where possible instead of relying only on nameplates.
  2. Capture transient behavior. Identify inrush currents, motor starts and power-factor behavior. A load with a low or rapidly changing power factor can stress a UPS even when its average watts appear modest.
  3. Add growth headroom. Size above the present connected watt load so normal growth does not push the inverter to its limit. Document the assumed growth period and the maximum allowable operating percentage.
  4. Set the ride-through target. Decide whether the batteries must bridge generator transfer, tolerate short disturbances, or support an orderly shutdown. This decision determines required battery capacity.
  5. Check electrical compatibility. Confirm three-phase voltage, frequency, input and output arrangements, bypass topology, short-circuit ratings and grounding. Verify that the generator and UPS controls do not interact in a way that causes unstable frequency or repeated transfers.
  6. Specify batteries and access. Select chemistry, temperature range, monitoring, replacement interval, ventilation or other safety provisions, and a safe method for isolating and replacing cabinets.
  7. Choose scalability and monitoring. Confirm whether modules or battery cabinets can be added later, how alarms are exposed to building-management systems, and which bypass modes are available for maintenance.
  8. Coordinate protection. Have the engineer verify breaker coordination, fault-current withstand, selective coordination and bypass paths for both utility and generator operation.

Do not transfer a consumer UPS specification into a facility design. Data-centre systems require a documented load model, electrical study, commissioning plan and operating procedures.

N, N+1 and 2N redundancy explained

Redundancy describes how much equipment is installed compared with the capacity required by the critical load. Vertiv defines three common patterns:

Configuration Meaning What a single failure or maintenance event can do Design trade-offs
N No spare module; installed capacity exactly meets the required load A module failure or planned service can reduce available capacity or require a transfer, depending on the architecture Lowest capital cost and footprint, but less maintenance flexibility and no capacity reserve
N+1 One additional module beyond the capacity required for the critical load One module can fail or be removed for service while the remaining modules carry the design load, if the distribution path also supports that condition More resilience and maintainability than N, with additional cost, space and potentially different efficiency at light load
2N Two independent systems, each capable of carrying the full critical load One complete system can be unavailable while the other supplies the load, provided the load is correctly dual-corded or switched Strong fault-domain separation and maintenance flexibility, but roughly duplicated equipment, distribution paths, space and capital cost

These labels do not by themselves guarantee availability. Map maintenance procedures, bypass operation, breaker failures, control-system faults and human-error scenarios to the business availability target. Compare each design on availability objective, maintainability, fault domains, footprint, capital cost, efficiency at the expected load and generator compatibility.

Schneider Electric identifies five principal UPS system design configurations for distributing utility power to critical data-centre loads. The appropriate configuration depends on the distribution architecture, not just the number printed on the UPS nameplate. A 2N UPS plant can still have a single shared transfer switch or fuel system that creates a common failure point.

Standards, classifications and commissioning

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Facilities Manual, revised 15 December 2023, says backup-power systems should comply with NFPA 37, NFPA 70, NFPA 101, NFPA 110, NFPA 111 and IEEE 446. It also says generator acceptance testing for Level 1 systems should follow NFPA 110. These are U.S. federal-facility guidelines; the authority having jurisdiction, local code and the system’s classification control an actual project.

Uptime Institute says its Tier Standard draws on more than 20 years of incident data across more than 1,000 data centres and treats onsite power generation as the only reliable power source. That is the institute’s standard position, not a universal guarantee. Actual resilience depends on design execution, operations, testing, local utility conditions, fuel logistics and the competence of the response team.

How often should generators, UPS systems and batteries be tested?

There is no single interval established by the cited sources for every jurisdiction, system class and operating environment. The maintenance plan must follow applicable code, the equipment manufacturer’s instructions, the facility risk assessment and the authority having jurisdiction. Schneider Electric’s ASCO bulletin dated 13 September 2024 states that regular testing is needed to verify backup-power availability and performance and identifies NFPA 110 as a basis for demonstrating readiness.

Generator and transfer equipment

  • Exercise the generator under the schedule required by the applicable code and operating procedure; include the automatic start sequence rather than only a manual run.
  • Perform periodic load testing so the engine, alternator, cooling system and controls are evaluated at meaningful load. A no-load start does not prove capacity.
  • Operate the automatic transfer switch through transfer and retransfer, checking timing, interlocks, source sensing and alarms.
  • Sample and maintain fuel, verify storage levels and plan replenishment for the site’s outage duration and access constraints.
  • Document failed starts, unstable voltage or frequency, transfer failures and every corrective action.

UPS and batteries

  • Review UPS alarms, event logs, bypass status, inverter health, charger operation and remote-monitoring communications.
  • Inspect battery cabinets thermally and visually, and use impedance or conductance checks where appropriate to identify deteriorating cells or strings.
  • Verify battery temperature, ventilation or other safety controls, isolation points and clear access for replacement.
  • Test the intended maintenance-bypass procedure without exposing the critical load to an uncontrolled interruption.
  • Track firmware, monitoring changes, battery age, replacement dates and the results of discharge or runtime tests.

Testing is useful only when results are reviewed. A failed start, abnormal battery impedance or delayed transfer should trigger a documented investigation, risk assessment and retest before the system is declared ready.

Common design mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying by VA alone

VA and watts are related through power factor, but they are not interchangeable. Size the inverter for real watts, apparent power, transient behavior and the specified power factor range. A unit that appears adequate on VA can be overloaded by a high-watt load or a poorly behaved transient.

Assuming more batteries create more UPS capacity

External cabinets generally add energy and runtime; they do not necessarily increase the UPS’s kW or kVA output. Confirm the manufacturer’s limits, compatible battery strings, charging capacity and required firmware or control configuration.

Ignoring generator-UPS interaction

Generators can have limited short-circuit capacity or frequency response. Confirm rectifier settings, ramp rates, harmonic behavior, synchronization, bypass operation and transfer logic with the engineer and generator supplier before commissioning.

Counting modules but overlooking shared paths

N+1 or 2N does not remove a common transfer switch, distribution board, control network, cooling dependency or fuel system. Draw the complete fault tree and identify what remains shared during maintenance and failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing only components, not scenarios

A generator that starts during a monthly exercise may still fail to transfer under a real utility loss. A battery with a normal float voltage may still have a weak cell. Scenario-based tests, load tests, trend monitoring and documented follow-up are needed to establish readiness.

A practical selection decision

Start with the business consequence of an interruption, then select the physical design. If the objective is only to bridge a short transfer, a properly sized online UPS and compatible battery set may be sufficient when a compliant generator is available. If the site must continue through a prolonged outage, plan fuel, cooling, transfer equipment, maintenance access and replenishment alongside the UPS. If maintenance cannot interrupt service, evaluate N+1 or 2N after mapping the distribution and fault domains. Every choice should state the protected load, target runtime, voltage and phase, bypass arrangement, growth allowance, monitoring method and test evidence required at handover.
