Data centers used an estimated 485 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity worldwide in 2025, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) projects about 950 TWh in 2030. That would be roughly 3% of global electricity demand, but a global percentage hides the main practical issue: data centers are concentrated in particular regions, where a single campus can require hundreds of megawatts and compete for transmission, generation and transformers. The 2030 figure is a projection, not a measured outcome, and the IEA says results depend on artificial-intelligence adoption, hardware and software efficiency, and the ability of energy systems to connect new load.

How much electricity do data centers use?

The IEA’s 2026 update estimates global data-center electricity consumption at 485 TWh in 2025 and projects approximately 950 TWh in 2030. The updated outlook roughly doubles consumption over five years. Within that total, electricity use by AI-focused data centers is projected to triple between 2025 and 2030. Both numbers are IEA estimates or projections, not a meter reading from every facility worldwide.

The IEA’s previous 2025 analysis estimated 415 TWh in 2024, or about 1.5% of global electricity consumption. That older estimate and the newer 2025 estimate describe different years and report vintages; they should not be averaged or treated as contradictory measurements of the same period. The IEA’s 2025 Base Case previously put 2030 consumption at about 945 TWh, while the 2026 update gives an updated central outlook of about 950 TWh.

Data centers are not the only source of rising electricity demand. In the IEA’s 2025 analysis, data centers account for around one-tenth of global electricity-demand growth through 2030. Their influence is larger in some advanced economies, and their physical concentration can create a serious local problem even when their global share remains only a few percent.

What is the difference between data-center power capacity and electricity consumption?

Power capacity is a rate: the amount of electrical power a facility or connection can draw at a moment, measured in watts, megawatts (MW) or gigawatts (GW). Electricity consumption is energy accumulated over time, measured in watt-hours, megawatt-hours or TWh. A planned 500 MW connection therefore does not automatically mean 500 MW is drawn continuously, nor does it translate into a specific annual TWh total without assumptions about utilization and efficiency.

Measure What it describes Typical unit What is needed to convert or interpret it
Facility or connection capacity Maximum or contracted instantaneous power level MW or GW Utilization, operating schedule and available grid capacity
Annual electricity consumption Energy used over a year MWh or TWh Installed equipment, utilization, power efficiency, cooling and other infrastructure
Server or rack power Electrical load of computing equipment in a rack or server system kW per rack or MW for a hall Number of racks, workload, power-management settings and cooling design
Grid connection rating Power the utility connection is designed or approved to deliver MW or GW Interconnection studies, transmission limits, protection equipment and local generation

The IEA’s 2025 analysis separates IT equipment from cooling and other facility infrastructure. Accelerated servers, driven largely by AI adoption, account for almost half of the net increase in global data-center electricity consumption through 2030 in the IEA Base Case; cooling and other infrastructure account for about one-fifth of that increase. Consequently, a server-load estimate is not a complete estimate of a data center’s electricity use.

How much power does an AI data center need?

There is no single standard size for an “AI data center.” Requirements depend on the number and type of accelerators, the way models are trained or served, networking, storage, cooling and the amount of redundancy. AI workloads can also change load rapidly rather than holding a smooth, predictable level.

The IEA’s 2026 update states: “Unlike traditional data centre operations, AI training and model use induce large and rapid power swings, making energy storage critical to ensure that electricity is always supplied reliably.” This describes a reliability characteristic, not a universal MW requirement. A campus may have a high connection rating while operating below it most of the time, or it may need additional capacity so short-duration peaks do not threaten computing service.

When comparing an AI proposal, ask for at least four separate values:

  • IT load, including the planned accelerator and server fleet.
  • Total facility load, including cooling, networking, storage and power-conversion losses.
  • Firm grid-connection capacity and any staged energization schedule.
  • Expected annual consumption, with utilization and efficiency assumptions.

Why can a small global share create a large local grid impact?

The IEA’s 2025 analysis estimated that the United States represented 45% of global data-center electricity consumption in 2024, China 25% and Europe 15%. These are regional shares of a global total for that year, not percentages of each region’s entire electricity demand. The same analysis found that nearly half of US data-center capacity was located in five regional clusters.

Clustering means a utility may face a very large new load in one substation or transmission corridor while the national system still appears to have adequate generation. Local effects can include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • New transmission lines, substations, transformers and protection equipment.
  • Interconnection queues that delay both data centers and other industrial or renewable projects.
  • Higher reserve requirements when a large customer’s load can rise quickly.
  • Competition for scarce land, water, fuel infrastructure or construction capacity.
  • Greater exposure to a single transmission outage or constrained corridor.

The IEA’s 2025 executive summary says: “Electricity grids are already under strain in many places: we estimate that unless these risks are addressed, around 20% of planned data centre projects could be at risk of delays.” That is a global estimate of planned projects, not a prediction that one in five operating facilities will fail.

Can the grid supply new data centers?

Whether a grid can serve a proposed facility is a location-specific engineering and regulatory question. It depends on available generation, transmission headroom, substation capacity, transformer procurement, protection studies, permitting and the utility’s rules for assigning upgrade costs. A national electricity surplus does not guarantee that a particular site can receive a new connection.

US connection and construction timelines

For the United States, the IEA’s 2025 investment analysis reported that grid infrastructure often takes five to 15 years from planning to completion, while data centers can be built in roughly three to six years. In 2024, reported US grid-connection waits were commonly one to three years and reached up to seven years in data-center hotspots. These are dated reported conditions, not a universal timetable for every US utility. The analysis also described constraints in transformer supply.

Item Reported US timeframe How to interpret it
Data-center construction Three to six years Typical range cited by the IEA in 2025; individual projects vary
Grid infrastructure planning through completion Five to 15 years Includes major network work, not just a service drop
Grid-connection wait in 2024 One to three years; up to seven years in hotspots Reported US conditions that depend on utility and location

Developers can reduce risk by selecting sites with existing transmission capacity, phasing construction, accepting interruptible or conditional service where allowed, and coordinating generation and storage with the utility. None of those approaches removes the need for formal interconnection studies or guarantees that a project will be built.

How do data centers keep the power on?

Reliability has two layers. The first is the grid’s ability to deliver sufficient power and recover from disturbances. The second is the facility’s ability to keep its critical computing load operating through short interruptions, voltage events or generator-start delays.

Facility equipment

  • Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS): batteries or other systems that bridge the gap between a grid disturbance and longer-duration backup.
  • Backup generators: commonly sized to carry critical loads when the grid is unavailable for an extended period, subject to fuel, emissions and testing requirements.
  • Onsite batteries: useful for ride-through, peak management and potentially fast grid services, depending on market rules and controls.
  • Redundant electrical paths: multiple feeds, switchgear and cooling systems reduce the effect of a single component failure.

Backup equipment does not make a data center independent of the grid. Fuel deliveries, maintenance, emissions permits, generator capacity and the duration of an outage all impose limits.

Storage and flexible operation

The IEA’s 2026 update projects that 20–25 GW of battery storage could be installed in data centers globally by 2030. This is a potential future deployment, not capacity already installed. If market rules and incentives align, those batteries could provide fast response to the grid as well as backup or peak management for the facility.

Onsite natural gas

The IEA’s 2026 update estimates that approximately 15–27 GW of onsite natural-gas capacity could power data centers by 2030, mostly in the United States. It also estimates that providing reliable onsite electricity for critical and variable loads may require 30%–70% more gas-fired generation infrastructure than the demand alone, because equipment must cover peaks and redundancy. The IEA identifies design, supply-chain, regulatory and financial questions around this approach and says onsite gas does not remove the need to address grid bottlenecks.

What supplies the electricity?

The IEA’s 2025 supply analysis expects renewables and natural gas to lead near-term additions, with nuclear playing a growing role. Wind and solar produce electricity when resources are available and rely on the wider grid, storage or other resources to cover periods of low output. Gas can provide dispatchable generation, while nuclear and geothermal are potential longer-term or emerging sources in the IEA outlook.

“Renewable-powered” can mean different things. A power-purchase agreement (PPA) or other contract can financially support renewable generation without that generator physically supplying every electron consumed by a particular facility at every hour. The IEA’s 2025 accounting models physical electricity consumed using onsite generation and the local grid mix rather than simply the operator’s contractual procurement mix.

Question Why it matters
Is the source physically connected to the site? Onsite generation can support local reliability; remote generation still depends on transmission.
Is the source available at the required hour? Variable renewables need balancing, storage or firm resources for continuous service.
How quickly can it be added? Fuel, equipment, permitting and interconnection timelines may exceed the data-center schedule.
Is the claim contractual or physical? A procurement contract does not by itself change the local hourly grid mix.

Will data centers make electricity more expensive?

There is no single global answer. A data center can increase demand for generation and network upgrades, but the effect on household or business bills depends on local utility tariffs, who pays for upgrades, rate-case decisions, tax arrangements, market conditions and whether the facility brings new revenue or displaces other load.

The IEA’s global analyses do not determine the bill impact for a specific community or customer. To evaluate a local claim, examine the utility’s interconnection agreement, transmission and substation cost allocation, proposed rate case, demand charges, incentives, expected load factor and any protections against stranded infrastructure if the project is delayed or cancelled.

Why are data-center forecasts so uncertain?

Forecasts must estimate several moving parts at once: how quickly AI services are adopted, how many servers are deployed, the efficiency of chips and software, cooling performance, utilization, and whether grids can connect the load. The IEA’s 2025 demand analysis expresses this uncertainty through scenarios rather than a single guaranteed path.

IEA 2035 case (2025 analysis) Approximate data-center electricity consumption Meaning
Headwinds About 700 TWh Slower adoption, stronger efficiency gains or greater energy-system constraints
Lift-Off More than 1,700 TWh Faster growth and weaker constraints than the central outlook

These sensitivity cases are not competing measurements. They show how different assumptions produce very different totals. The IEA’s 2026 update describes near-term bottlenecks in the value chain while leaving open greater long-term upside if those constraints ease. Planned capacity should therefore be treated as a pipeline, not as guaranteed future consumption.

What should a reader check in a data-center power claim?

  1. Identify the year and geography. A global 2030 projection cannot be compared directly with a US 2024 observation.
  2. Check the unit. GW or MW is power capacity; TWh is energy consumed over a period.
  3. Separate IT load from total facility load. Cooling and electrical infrastructure add to server demand.
  4. Ask whether the number is observed, estimated or projected. Planned projects and possible battery deployments are not installed assets.
  5. Locate the load. Regional clustering determines whether a local substation or transmission corridor is constrained.
  6. Distinguish physical supply from contracts. PPAs and certificates do not necessarily describe the hourly electricity physically serving the site.
  7. Review the grid timeline. Interconnection studies, transformer availability and transmission construction can take longer than the building itself.

The practical bottom line

Data-center electricity use is growing rapidly: the IEA’s 2026 update estimates 485 TWh worldwide in 2025 and projects about 950 TWh in 2030. The headline global share remains modest, but concentrated AI and cloud campuses can create outsized local requirements for generation, transmission, storage and reliability equipment. Capacity ratings, annual consumption, contractual renewable purchases and physical grid supply answer different questions. Any claim about outages, bills or whether a new facility can connect must therefore be tested against the specific utility, location, project schedule and cost-allocation rules involved.
