Data centers can produce non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (EMF): extremely low-frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields from electrical current in power equipment and wiring, and radiofrequency (RF) fields if wireless transmitters are present. These are not X-rays or radioactive particles. The available sources do not establish routine ionizing emissions from ordinary servers or power equipment, or a single exposure level that applies to every data center.
What kinds of fields can come from a data center?
ELF fields from electricity
Electric and magnetic fields occur wherever electrical current flows, including cables, wiring, and power equipment. These are commonly described as extremely low-frequency (ELF) fields. The World Health Organization (WHO) says ELF fields are strongest near their source and diminish with distance. WHO: electromagnetic fields
RF fields from wireless transmitters
If a facility uses wireless transmitters, they can emit radiofrequency (RF) fields, which are radio waves. Their presence and contribution depend on the equipment at that site; general RF guidance is not a measurement or assessment of data centers specifically. WHO: electromagnetic fields and health
Is data-center radiation ionizing?
In everyday conversation, “radiation” can refer to very different things. The ELF fields associated with electrical equipment and the RF signals from wireless devices are non-ionizing: they do not have the same character as ionizing radiation such as X-rays. The sources reviewed do not establish routine X-ray emissions or radioactive-particle emissions from ordinary data-center servers and power equipment.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration uses “electronic product radiation” as a broad regulatory term that includes both ionizing and non-ionizing emissions. Its general descriptions of low-frequency equipment, including power-generation and transmission equipment, do not mean that ordinary data-center equipment emits X-rays or radioactive material. FDA: radiation-emitting products
Does living near a data center mean a particular exposure?
No universal exposure figure for data centers is established by the sources cited here. A facility’s fields depend on the sources present, their operating conditions, and how far a person is from them. WHO’s description of ELF fields indicates that they diminish with distance, but that general principle does not substitute for measurements at a particular property.

One special case is a data center co-located with a high-voltage substation. ITU-T Recommendation K.125 addresses electromagnetic disturbances and protection in that setting, including server immunity to power-frequency magnetic fields and engineering measures such as separation. It is a specialized infrastructure and compatibility recommendation, not evidence that all data centers sit beside substations or a public-health finding about every facility. WHO’s 2007 fact sheet on ELF fields reported that its expert task group found no substantive health issues related to ELF electric fields at levels generally encountered by the public. For long-term exposure to ELF magnetic fields, the fact sheet described the evidence concerning childhood leukemia as uncertain and substantially weaker than what would be needed to infer causation. These are population-level conclusions, not measurements of exposure at a particular data center. WHO: Extremely low frequency fields

WHO’s RF materials describe heating as the main established biological effect of RF fields at sufficiently high levels, while noting that ordinary public exposures are much lower than levels needed for significant heating. This general guidance is not a site-specific finding or a guarantee about every possible exposure. WHO’s electromagnetic-fields Q&A also notes that an RF health-risk assessment monograph was being undertaken; that statement should not be mistaken for a completed assessment. WHO: electromagnetic fields Q&A

- Identify the likely source. Distinguish power-frequency ELF sources such as electrical equipment and wiring from RF transmitters, and note whether high-voltage infrastructure is co-located.
- Consider location and distance. A concern about equipment inside a facility is different from one about a nearby substation or a transmitter. Field strength depends on the source and proximity.
- Seek a qualified, site-specific assessment if needed. Use applicable local guidance and an appropriate measurement approach for the source in question. ITU-T K.125 is relevant to electromagnetic compatibility when a data center shares a site with a high-voltage substation; it is not a general public measurement protocol.
The cited sources do not establish a general need for residents to buy a consumer EMF meter or shielding product. WHO’s illustrative figures for other sources, such as computer screens and power lines, are not data-center measurements and should not be treated as such.
