Choose Dashlane if you want a managed subscription with built-in sync, autofill, and secure sharing. Choose KeePass if you want free, open-source software and are willing to select the right edition or app and manage database storage, synchronization, and backups yourself. Neither choice is automatically safer: the practical difference is how much of the day-to-day setup and recovery you want to handle.
How Dashlane and KeePass differ
Dashlane is a password-management service with paid personal plans. Its current lineup includes Premium for one member and Friends & Family for ten members; Dashlane says it no longer sells its Free plan or several older plans. The service manages encrypted cloud synchronization and offers features such as autofill and secure sharing, subject to plan and app details. Dashlane’s personal-plan comparison was updated September 17, 2026.
KeePass is free, open-source password database software—not one single app experience. The official comparison distinguishes KeePass 1.x and 2.x, and third-party compatible apps can differ too. KeePass 2.x is the more feature-rich, actively developed edition in the project’s comparison; users still need to decide where the database lives, how it is synchronized, and how it is backed up. KeePass’s edition comparison lists 2.x synchronization and shared editing features, but does not make a particular cloud service part of KeePass.
Recommended Free Tools
| What matters | Dashlane | KeePass |
|---|---|---|
| Cost and plans | Paid personal subscriptions. Premium is for one member; Friends & Family covers ten accounts under one subscription. Live checkout price and regional availability should be checked directly. Dashlane pricing | The KeePass software is free. There is no equivalent centrally managed personal-plan lineup in the project’s edition comparison. KeePass edition comparison |
| Sync and backups | Dashlane manages encrypted cloud sync as part of its service. Plan comparison | 2.x lists synchronization and shared editing, but you choose the database location and sync/backup arrangement. KeePass edition comparison |
| Sharing | Secure sharing is listed among personal-plan features, with details varying by plan. Plan comparison | 2.x lists shared database editing. That is not necessarily the same as a consumer sharing workflow with granular recipient permissions. KeePass edition comparison |
| Platforms and autofill | Dashlane documents web, Android, iPhone, and macOS apps; individual features have exceptions. Dashlane app feature table | Platform support and autofill depend on the edition or compatible client. KeePass 2.x runs on Windows and via Mono on Linux, macOS, BSD, and other systems. KeePass edition comparison |
| Passkeys | Passkey management is listed across Dashlane’s apps, with app-specific exceptions. Dashlane app feature table | KeePass 2.x marks passkey support as plugin-supported; verify the specific client, plugin, and target platform. KeePass edition comparison |
Which one should you choose?
Choose Dashlane for a managed, consistent routine
- You want sync handled as part of a service rather than arranging database storage and backups yourself.
- You value integrated autofill and secure sharing, and the plan-specific features fit your needs.
- You prefer support and product features delivered through a maintained subscription rather than assembling an edition, compatible apps, and plugins.
Dashlane lists unlimited passwords and devices in its personal plans, along with monitoring and VPN features subject to plan details. VPN access is not included for every Friends & Family member: Dashlane says the plan manager receives Premium features while other members receive everything except VPN. Choose KeePass for control and no software subscription
- You want free, open-source software and are comfortable choosing between KeePass editions or compatible clients.
- You can take responsibility for where the database is stored, how changes sync between devices, and how backups are made and tested.
- You are prepared to verify whether a particular mobile client, browser integration, passkey plugin, or sharing method supports your intended workflow.
KeePass 2.x supports a broader feature set than 1.x in the project’s comparison, including synchronization, shared editing, and plugin-based functions. These labels do not guarantee that every third-party app behaves alike; when choosing a phone app or browser workflow, identify the exact client and platform rather than relying on the word “KeePass” alone.
Security and recovery: compare responsibilities, not slogans
Dashlane describes its architecture as zero knowledge. Its support page says, “Dashlane is built on the principle of zero knowledge, meaning only you have access to the data in your Dashlane vault,” and states that the Master Password is not stored on Dashlane’s servers and is never sent over the internet. These are Dashlane’s descriptions of its own design, not an independent security verdict. Dashlane’s security explanation

KeePass’s edition comparison lists AES/Rijndael and ChaCha20 for 2.x and says Argon2 is available as a key-derivation option. A feature list alone does not establish that KeePass is categorically more secure than Dashlane. In either setup, device security, password and key quality, timely updates, safe backups, and the way synchronization is configured affect the outcome.

The operational tradeoff is control versus managed service. With KeePass, protecting access to the database and preserving a usable backup are your responsibility. With Dashlane, the service handles cloud sync, but you still need to protect your account credentials and understand the recovery options available to your account. Dashlane’s security page says encrypted stored data is in EU West AWS by default; it separately notes that some professional teams may request U.S. East during team creation. That statement is not a personal-plan data-residency guarantee. Dashlane security documentation

Moving from KeePass to Dashlane safely
Dashlane supports importing KeePass data through CSV or XML. Treat either export as sensitive: a file containing passwords can expose the vault if left behind or copied to an unprotected location. Dashlane warns that XML exports are unencrypted; KeePass CSV export contains logins only, so CSV should not be assumed to carry every note, attachment, or other record type. Dashlane’s KeePass import instructions
- Make a verified backup of the KeePass database. Keep the original database and its key material available until you have checked the imported data.
- Export from the KeePass edition you actually use. Choose CSV or XML as appropriate, bearing in mind that the CSV export is limited to logins.
- Import the file into Dashlane. Follow the current import flow in Dashlane and check its results rather than assuming every record transferred.
- Review important entries. Verify logins and any data types you rely on before changing or deleting the original database.
- Remove the export file when finished. Dashlane specifically warns that XML is unencrypted; securely delete any temporary export and avoid leaving copies in downloads, cloud folders, or backups you did not intend to create.
Verdict
For people who want password management to work as a maintained service with included sync, autofill, and sharing, Dashlane is the simpler fit—provided its subscription and plan details make sense at checkout. For people who prioritize free, open-source software and want to control the database workflow, KeePass is a strong fit if they are willing to manage editions or clients, sync, and recovery themselves.
