Short answer: a dash cam records while your car is parked only when two conditions are met: the camera supports a parking mode, and it receives power after the ignition is switched off. In most installations that means a compatible hardwire kit, an OBD-II power cable, or a dedicated dash-cam battery pack. Simply leaving a camera plugged into a socket does not guarantee parked recording and can discharge the starter battery.
The VIOFO A329S and Thinkware U3000 Pro are sensible current candidates for different priorities, but there is no evidence for one universally best model. Choose by recording trigger, camera coverage, power method, battery protection and installation constraints rather than by the words “parking mode” on the box.
What a dash cam needs to record with the car off
Parking surveillance is a system, not a single menu setting. The camera must have firmware and hardware that support a parked mode, and its power circuit must remain live after the vehicle’s accessory circuit shuts down. VIOFO’s support documentation states the requirement plainly: “Yes, the camera can record during parking, but you need to ensure constant power supply first” (support page modified June 9, 2023).

The three power paths
- Hardwire kit: connects to a constant-live fuse, an accessory (ACC) fuse and a ground point. The kit normally includes low-voltage cutoff.
- OBD-II power cable: draws power from the diagnostic socket and can provide ignition-state information on supported vehicles and cameras. Compatibility is model- and vehicle-dependent.
- Dedicated dash-cam battery pack: charges while driving and powers the camera while parked, reducing direct use of the vehicle’s starter battery. The battery must be compatible with the camera and its parking-mode detection method.
A cigarette-lighter adapter is suitable only if the socket is live when the car is off and the camera has an appropriate cutoff arrangement. A constantly powered socket without suitable protection can drain the battery, and some vehicles turn their sockets off as soon as the ignition is removed.
How parking modes differ
“Parking mode” is an umbrella term. Two cameras can use the label while providing very different evidence after an incident. Compare what wakes the camera, what it records before and after the trigger, and how much power and storage each mode consumes.
| Mode | What it does | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Continuous low-bitrate | Records all the time at reduced data rate while parked. | Provides the broadest timeline, including activity that does not trigger a sensor. | Uses the most storage and generally draws more power. |
| Motion or impact triggered | Stays in standby and records when the camera detects movement or an impact. | Lower power and storage use than continuous recording. | May miss an event if motion is outside the detection zone or the camera wakes only after the impact. |
| Radar-assisted motion | Uses a radar sensor to watch for approaching movement and wakes the camera when activity is detected. | Can detect a person or vehicle before contact while using less power than continuous recording. | Requires compatible radar hardware and careful sensitivity settings; performance varies with the installation environment. |
| Impact-only or energy-saving | Remains deeply asleep and wakes when an impact signal is detected. | Lowest parked power consumption. | Usually captures little or no pre-impact context, so it may show damage without showing what caused it. |
Thinkware documents radar and energy-saving approaches for supported cameras, while VIOFO describes configurable parking behaviors in its guides. Do not treat “impact detection,” “motion detection” and “buffered parking” as interchangeable terms: ask whether the camera stores a short period before the trigger, after it, or both.

Choosing the right power method
Hardwire kit: the most controllable installation
A hardwire kit is usually the most predictable way to provide both constant power and an ignition signal. The battery (BAT) lead goes to a fuse that remains live when the ignition is off. The ACC lead goes to a fuse that loses power when the engine stops. The ground lead attaches to a suitable chassis point. The camera uses the ACC state change to enter parking mode.
Hardwire kits from VIOFO and other manufacturers commonly include low-voltage cutoff. You select a cutoff threshold or timer so the kit stops feeding the camera when the starter battery reaches the configured limit or the parking period expires. The exact fuse positions differ by vehicle; never assume a fuse is constant or switched based only on its label.
OBD-II: simpler, but not universal
An OBD-II cable avoids opening the fuse box and is often easier for a temporary installation. It can provide an ignition-state signal on supported vehicles. Confirm that the cable is approved for your camera and that your vehicle’s diagnostic port remains powered in the required way. OBD-II adapters can occupy the port needed by a diagnostic tool or fleet device, and some vehicles manage accessory power differently from others.

Dedicated battery pack: separates surveillance from the starter battery
A dash-cam battery pack charges while you drive and then powers the camera during parking. This is useful when you want long parked coverage without drawing directly from the car battery, or when a hardwire installation is impractical. The pack still needs a correct charging connection and a camera-specific output. Verify how the camera detects ignition-off; a battery pack that supplies power continuously may require an ACC signal or a compatible controller.
Cigarette-lighter adapter: only in limited cases
Use the socket method only after confirming that the socket remains live while parked and that the camera or adapter has a genuine low-voltage protection strategy. VIOFO warns that an always-powered cigarette outlet can drain the vehicle battery. If the car lacks the accessory connection required by the camera’s switching setup, the described hardwire behavior will not work as intended.
Hardwire installation: a safe, repeatable procedure
Professional installation is sensible if you are unfamiliar with automotive fuses or cannot verify circuits safely. Thinkware recommends professional installation for parking-mode setups. If you install yourself, follow the camera and vehicle manuals and use a multimeter rather than guessing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Confirm compatibility. Check that the camera, hardwire kit and vehicle use the same connector and that the kit supports the camera’s required voltage and parking modes.
- Find the fuse panel. Use the vehicle manual to locate an interior fuse box and identify candidate constant-live and accessory circuits. Do not use a safety-critical circuit such as airbags, braking systems or engine control.
- Test the candidate fuses. With the ignition off, measure each candidate; then switch the ignition on and off again. A BAT circuit should remain live when off. An ACC circuit should lose power after the vehicle shuts down. Some cars delay shutdown, so wait through the vehicle’s normal sleep period.
- Install the correct fuse taps. Match the tap type and fuse rating to the vehicle. Keep the original fuse in the protected position and follow the kit’s orientation instructions. Never replace a fuse with a higher rating to accommodate the camera.
- Connect the leads. Attach BAT to the constant-live tap, ACC to the switched tap and ground to a clean, secure metal chassis point. A loose ground can cause intermittent resets that look like a camera fault.
- Route and secure the cable. Tuck wiring behind trim without crossing an airbag path or interfering with pedals, steering or seat movement. Leave enough slack at the camera connector to avoid tension.
- Set the cutoff and parking behavior. Choose the manufacturer’s recommended voltage threshold or timer, then select continuous, motion, radar or impact-only recording according to your priorities.
- Verify the transition. Start the vehicle, confirm normal recording, turn it off, lock it and observe whether the camera enters parking mode. Recheck after the car has been parked long enough for its electronics to sleep.
Battery protection is helpful, not absolute
A cutoff circuit reduces risk but cannot guarantee that the starter battery will never go flat. Thinkware documents a specific failure condition: if the vehicle voltage is already below the selected protection value when parking mode begins, the camera may not recognize the threshold and can completely drain the battery. A weak, aged or partially discharged battery is therefore a poor foundation for extended parking surveillance.

- Test or replace a battery that struggles to start the vehicle before adding parking recording.
- Use a conservative cutoff or a shorter timer if the car is parked for days at a time.
- After installation, measure the vehicle’s resting voltage and confirm that the camera actually shuts down at the selected limit.
- In freezing or very hot conditions, expect battery capacity and behavior to differ from normal conditions.
- If the car is rarely driven, prefer a dedicated dash-cam battery pack or disable parking mode rather than relying on a marginal starter battery.
Configure parking mode for the evidence you need
Choose coverage before sensitivity
Continuous low-bitrate recording is the broadest option when you need to know what happened throughout a parking period. Triggered modes conserve power, but they depend on the camera’s field of view and detection algorithm. Radar-assisted modes can wake for approaching movement, while impact-only modes may preserve battery at the cost of pre-impact context.
Balance front-only and multi-camera coverage
A front camera can document a vehicle approaching from ahead but may miss a door strike or scrape at the side or rear. Front-and-rear systems or additional cameras improve physical coverage, provided the installation and storage plan support them. The available sources do not provide a standardized comparative test of plate detail or night performance for the named candidates, so inspect current sample footage and specifications before deciding.
Plan storage around the selected mode
Continuous parked recording fills storage faster than event clips. Use a high-endurance memory card recommended for the exact camera, enable overwrite behavior if appropriate, and review protected-event handling so a full card does not stop ordinary recording. Triggered modes reduce storage demand but can produce fewer files and less context.
Troubleshooting parked recording
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Camera turns off immediately when the engine stops | No constant power, incorrect BAT connection, or a socket that shuts off. | Test the constant-live fuse with a meter and confirm the hardwire or OBD-II cable is compatible. |
| Camera stays in normal driving mode | ACC lead is on a constant circuit, or the camera cannot detect ignition state. | Verify that the ACC fuse loses power after shutdown and that the parking-mode setting is enabled. |
| Camera records but the battery is weak the next morning | Cutoff threshold is too low, the timer is too long, or the battery was already discharged. | Raise the cutoff, shorten the timer, test the battery and inspect the kit’s cutoff behavior. |
| Camera never wakes for an event | Impact-only or motion sensitivity is too low, the sensor is obstructed, or the event occurred outside the detection area. | Review the mode definition, adjust sensitivity within the manufacturer’s guidance and check camera placement. |
| Random resets or missing clips | Loose ground, poor cable connection, unsuitable memory card or unstable voltage. | Reseat wiring, use a supported high-endurance card and verify voltage during startup and shutdown. |
| Parking mode works in one vehicle but not another | Different fuse layouts, delayed sleep behavior or incompatible OBD-II power management. | Repeat the constant/ACC tests for the second vehicle and consult its wiring diagram. |
Buying checklist
- Confirm that the exact camera model supports the parking behavior you want, not merely a generic “parking mode” label.
- Decide whether you need continuous coverage, motion or radar detection, or impact-only wake-up.
- Identify a compatible power path: hardwire, OBD-II or dedicated battery pack.
- Check whether the required cable is included or sold separately. The A329S, for example, is discussed with a required hardwiring kit for low-voltage operation, and the HK6 is identified as a compatible A329S-series accessory.
- Look for adjustable voltage cutoff and timer settings, then read the manufacturer’s warning about low voltage at parking-mode entry.
- Match camera coverage to the likely incident: front only, front/rear or additional views.
- Budget for installation, a suitable memory card and any battery pack in addition to the camera.
- Verify regional availability, connector type, firmware support and current package contents before ordering.
Bottom line
The best dash cam that records when your car is off is the one whose parking mode, power method and battery protection match your vehicle and your evidence needs. Start by confirming an off-ignition power source, then choose the trigger style: continuous for maximum context, radar or motion for a balance of coverage and consumption, or impact-only for the lowest draw. The VIOFO A329S with its compatible hardwire option and the radar-equipped Thinkware U3000 Pro are credible candidates to investigate, but neither can be called objectively best without a controlled comparison of your priorities.
