To get dash cam video onto your phone, use the camera maker’s companion app over the camera’s Wi-Fi, or remove the microSD card as directed in the camera manual and read it with a phone-compatible card reader. The exact steps depend on your camera model, phone, app, card, and video format.
Transfer a clip with the dash cam app
This is usually the most convenient route when your camera and phone are supported. Use the app named in your camera’s current manual; manufacturers’ workflows are not interchangeable.
- Enable Wi-Fi on the camera. Follow the model’s manual for the setting or button.
- Connect your phone to the camera’s Wi-Fi network if the instructions prompt you to. Some cameras create their own local network.
- Open the companion app and find the recording you need.
- Choose the app’s save, export, or download control to copy the clip to your phone. Labels and available options vary by model.
For example, VIOFO’s instructions say to turn on camera Wi-Fi, select the camera’s SSID in the phone’s Wi-Fi settings, and then open the VIOFO app. Garmin describes using a camera-generated Wi-Fi link to review, trim, and export videos. Nextbase says its Wi-Fi feature can download video and photo files to a phone or tablet. Check the specific instructions for your camera rather than applying one brand’s steps to another: VIOFO app instructions, Garmin video export information, and Nextbase Wi-Fi feature information.
Why the camera’s Wi-Fi may say it has no internet
A camera’s Wi-Fi can provide a local connection for accessing recordings without connecting your phone to the internet. VIOFO specifically says its camera Wi-Fi works this way and that a phone message such as “Connected without Internet” is expected in its workflow. That notice alone does not show that the transfer has failed. Follow your camera’s instructions; do not assume every brand displays the same message or behaves identically. Use a card reader if app transfer is unavailable
- Turn off the camera and remove the microSD card only as its manual directs. Removing it improperly can interrupt access to recordings.
- Choose a reader or adapter that matches both the card and your phone’s connector. A USB-C reader is an option for a compatible USB-C phone; a Lightning phone or another connector needs a reader or adapter suited to that port.
- Connect the reader and use a supported app to access or import the clip. Apple documents access to SD cards through compatible readers and apps on iPhone, subject to supported formats and devices: Apple: Import photos and videos and Apple: Connect external storage devices.
A card reader is not guaranteed to work with every phone, card, or camera. Confirm compatibility for your exact devices before relying on this method.
If the clip copies but will not play
Copying a file and playing it are separate compatibility questions. Apple notes that media in an unsupported format may not be viewable in iOS. If the clip appears on your phone but will not open in the app you tried, test a video player that supports the file or transfer it to a computer. Apple’s import guidance explains the format limitation.

Choose the right video quality
Some camera models expose more than one copy of a recording. Nextbase says some higher-resolution models keep both high- and low-resolution versions: the smaller copy supports efficient streaming, while the high-resolution file is available for playback. If the app offers both, choose the higher-resolution clip when detail matters and keep it; use the smaller copy when it better suits quick viewing or sharing. - Confirm the exact camera model and the companion app named in its current manual.
- Use the manual’s directions for enabling Wi-Fi, selecting the camera network, and safely removing the card.
- For card transfer, match the reader to the phone’s connector and the card type.
- If a file transfers but does not play, check the phone app’s format support or try a compatible player or computer.
- If the camera offers multiple quality versions, identify which one you are saving before deleting or sharing files.
There is no universal transfer-speed comparison that applies to both methods: the camera, app, phone, card, and file all affect the experience. Choose based on whether your devices support the app route, whether direct card access is practical, and whether you need the full-resolution recording.
