Dart 3 made sound null safety universal, added records, patterns and class modifiers, and introduced an early Dart-to-WebAssembly preview. The Dart team called it “the largest Dart release to date”—its own description, not the result of an independent measurement.

Why Dart 3 was a major release

Dart was created at Google and became closely associated with Flutter, Google’s toolkit for building cross-platform applications. In its May 25, 2023 issue, Bytes framed Dart 3 as “The biggest Dart yet,” echoing the Dart team’s May 10 announcement. Dart product manager Michael Thomsen wrote, “Today, live from Mountain View, we’re announcing Dart 3 — the largest Dart release to date!” The wording describes the team’s view of the release; it does not quantify code size, feature count or performance.

The release’s significance is easier to understand through four distinct changes: a migration requirement, new ways to express and handle data, more control over class hierarchies, and an emerging WebAssembly compilation target.

What changed for existing Dart projects?

Dart 3 completed the transition to sound null safety: all Dart 3 code uses it. A non-nullable type can be trusted not to contain null, which lets the type system catch certain null-related mistakes and gives the compiler and runtime opportunities to optimize. It does not prevent every kind of programming error.

The change also affected migration. Dart 3 removed support for running without sound null safety, so legacy code that depended on an unsound mode had to be migrated. The Dart team expected most apps and packages that had already migrated to work, and advised developers encountering problems to consult its migration guidance.

In its May 10, 2023 announcement, the Dart team reported that 99% of the top 1,000 packages on pub.dev supported null safety. That is a historical figure from 2023, not a current compatibility measurement or a guarantee that any particular project is ready for Dart 3.

How records, patterns and class modifiers differ

Dart 3 introduced three language feature groups. They address different needs rather than serving as interchangeable additions.

Records: group typed values

A record groups multiple values, each with a type, without requiring a dedicated class for every small grouping. This is useful when a function needs to return a few related values or a temporary structure needs more shape than a single value but does not merit a named class.

Patterns: inspect and unpack values

Patterns let code match and destructure values, including records. They help express the process of checking a value’s structure and extracting the pieces of interest. Records define a way to group values; patterns provide a way to inspect and unpack them.

Class modifiers: set rules for class use

Class modifiers give library and API authors ways to constrain how classes can be extended, implemented or otherwise used. They are tools for controlling a class hierarchy and communicating which forms of reuse an API permits, rather than tools for grouping or unpacking data.

What did Dart-to-WebAssembly mean at launch?

Dart 3’s WebAssembly work was a preview, not a mature, proven performance upgrade. The Dart team said its initial focus was Flutter web and discussed faster loading, performance and semantic consistency as goals. It also described the effort as early and incomplete. The announcement did not provide benchmark results showing that those projected benefits had already been achieved.

For readers evaluating the release, this makes platform maturity a separate consideration from the completed language changes: sound null safety and the new language features were part of Dart 3, while Dart-to-Wasm was still developing.

How to assess Dart 3’s impact

  • Migration: check whether project code and dependencies use sound null safety; Dart 3 no longer supports running in an unsound mode.
  • Language expressiveness: consider records for lightweight typed groupings and patterns for matching or extracting their values.
  • API design: use class modifiers to express restrictions on extending or implementing classes.
  • Platform maturity: treat the launch-era Dart-to-WebAssembly support as a preview, and distinguish the team’s goals from demonstrated results.

These are practical ways to compare the release’s changes by purpose, not evidence of a benchmark comparison between Dart and another language or release.
