Short answer: A dark-matter halo is the enormous, invisible mass distribution that surrounds a galaxy and is inferred from gravity. A dark galaxy is the galaxy itself: an unusually faint, diffuse system with very little detectable starlight. A dark galaxy may be strongly dominated by dark matter, but the phrase does not require that. The two terms describe different levels of structure, so they are not synonyms.
The distinction matters because every ordinary galaxy is embedded in a halo, while “dark galaxy” is an observational description applied only to especially hard-to-see galactic systems. Some faint galaxies appear to contain almost entirely dark matter; others contain little or none. The examples CDG-2 and NGC 1052-DF2 show why the label must be interpreted carefully.
What a dark-matter halo is
A dark-matter halo is an extended mass structure surrounding a galaxy. It is not a second, hidden disk of stars and it does not have a visible edge that astronomers can photograph directly. Instead, astronomers infer the halo from the way its gravity affects material that can be observed.
The luminous part of a galaxy—its stars, glowing gas and other ordinary matter—occupies only a small central region. NASA describes a galaxy’s dark halo as potentially up to 10 times larger in size than the familiar luminous region and up to 1,000 times greater in volume. Those figures describe the relative scale of the inferred halo and the visible galaxy, not a sharp boundary or a universal measurement for every galaxy.

Why the halo is invisible
Dark matter does not emit, absorb or reflect detectable light. A telescope therefore cannot make a conventional image of a halo. The halo’s presence is established indirectly: if visible stars, gas clouds or background galaxies move or appear distorted in a way that ordinary matter cannot explain by itself, an unseen mass distribution is a leading explanation.
What the halo does
Gravity from the halo helps hold a galaxy together and influences how its visible material moves. The halo is therefore a structural component of a galaxy, not merely an empty region around it. In the standard picture, the luminous disk or central stellar system forms inside a much larger dark-matter environment.
What astronomers mean by “dark galaxy”
A dark galaxy is an unusually faint or diffuse galaxy-scale system. The term describes what observations reveal: the object gives off so little concentrated light that it is difficult to detect against the sky. Its visible matter may consist of sparse stars, faint gas or a small population of compact star clusters.

“Dark” in this phrase does not establish a single composition. It can refer to very low surface brightness, a small amount of ordinary matter, or a system whose mass appears to be overwhelmingly dark matter. The dark-matter fraction must be measured separately for each object.
Why low surface brightness matters
Two galaxies could contain similar total numbers of stars yet have very different detectability if one spreads those stars over a much larger area. A diffuse system presents less light per unit of sky, making it harder to distinguish from the background. Astronomers therefore search for faint extended light, unusual concentrations of globular clusters and gravitational effects rather than relying only on a bright central image.
A dark galaxy is still a galaxy
The label applies to a galactic system, not to an invisible mass component. A dark galaxy can be embedded in its own dark-matter halo, just as brighter galaxies are, but the phrase “dark galaxy” refers to the faint system observed within that environment. Calling a halo a dark galaxy reverses the relationship between the two terms.

How astronomers detect a dark-matter halo
Rotation and orbital motion
In a rotating galaxy, astronomers measure how quickly stars or gas move at different distances from the center. The measured speeds reveal how much mass is influencing those orbits. If outer material moves faster than the visible matter alone would predict, an extended unseen mass component is needed to account for the gravity. This kind of rotation evidence is one of the standard ways a halo is inferred.

In those cases, researchers can measure the motions of stars or globular clusters orbiting within the galaxy. The range of speeds provides a dynamical estimate of the mass enclosed by their orbits. Such estimates are especially important for faint galaxies, where the visible light is not a reliable guide to the total mass.
Gravitational lensing
Gravity bends the path of light. A foreground halo can therefore distort the apparent shapes or positions of background galaxies. NASA’s COSMOS-Webb explanation describes weak gravitational lensing: the tiny, systematic changes in background-galaxy shapes are combined statistically to map the mass of the foreground halo.
Lensing is valuable because it responds to total mass, not just to stars that shine. It can reveal a halo even when the central galaxy is faint, although a lensing measurement generally requires many background galaxies and careful statistical analysis rather than one dramatic arc.
Why halo size is an estimate
Because dark matter is not directly imaged, quoted halo dimensions depend on how astronomers model the gravitational evidence. The “up to 10 times larger” size comparison is a scale statement from NASA, not a universal radius assigned to every galaxy. A halo’s inferred extent can differ with the galaxy, the observations and the definition used for the halo boundary.

How astronomers identify a dark galaxy
First step: find unusually faint light
Searches begin with imaging that can reveal very low surface brightness. Astronomers look for diffuse light spread over a broad area, with few obvious stars and no bright central concentration. The object may be classified as an ultra-diffuse galaxy or another low-luminosity system while its mass remains uncertain.

Second step: use tracers when the stars are hard to see
Globular clusters can act as visible tracers of an otherwise faint galaxy. Their positions and motions can reveal the gravitational field of the host. In some cases, the clusters are easier to identify than the galaxy’s diffuse stellar light, making them crucial for detecting and weighing the system.
Third step: estimate the mass dynamically
A faint appearance alone does not prove that an object is dark-matter dominated. Astronomers compare the motions of stars, gas or globular clusters with the amount of visible matter. If the measured motions require far more mass than the light accounts for, a large dark-matter component is indicated. If the visible matter can explain the motions, the galaxy may contain little dark matter despite being very faint.
CDG-2: a dark-matter-dominated example
NASA reported on February 18, 2026 that observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, Euclid and Subaru revealed faint diffuse light around four globular clusters in the Perseus cluster. The system, designated CDG-2, is a useful example of why a dark galaxy is identified through multiple kinds of evidence rather than appearance alone.

What was observed
CDG-2 has the luminosity of roughly 6 million Sun-like stars. That number describes its emitted light, not its total mass. The system was detected through its globular-cluster population and the faint glow associated with those clusters. Astronomer Dayi Li, quoted by NASA, said: “This is the first galaxy detected solely through its globular cluster population.”
What the preliminary mass estimate means
NASA’s preliminary analysis indicates that about 99% of CDG-2’s mass appears to be dark matter. “Preliminary” is important: the percentage is an initial estimate based on the available observations and analysis, not a final value that applies to every dark galaxy. If the estimate holds, CDG-2 is an extreme case in which the detectable stars and clusters account for only a small fraction of the gravitational mass.
CDG-2 illustrates the strong version of the phrase “dark galaxy”: a real galaxy-scale system with very little visible light compared with the mass inferred from gravity. It does not redefine a halo. The dark matter is the mass component; CDG-2 is the faint galactic system associated with that mass.

NGC 1052-DF2: why faint does not always mean dark-matter rich
NASA’s observations of the ultra-diffuse galaxy NGC 1052-DF2 provide the essential counterexample. Hubble measurements placed it about 72 million light-years away. The galaxy is nearly as wide as the Milky Way, yet it contains only about one two-hundredth as many stars.
What its cluster motions showed
Researchers measured the motions of DF2’s globular clusters to estimate the galaxy’s mass. NASA reports that the measured motions led them to conclude that the stars could account for nearly all of the mass. That leaves little room for a substantial dark-matter component within the galaxy.
The lesson from DF2
DF2 is extremely diffuse and faint, but its observed properties point toward dark-matter deficiency rather than dark-matter dominance. It can fit a broad observational use of “dark galaxy” because it is hard to see, yet it does not fit the assumption that every faint galaxy contains an overwhelming amount of dark matter. The term describes visibility; dynamics determine composition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are dark galaxies made of dark matter?
Some are strongly dark-matter dominated, some are not, and the phrase alone cannot decide between those possibilities. CDG-2’s preliminary estimate of approximately 99% dark matter represents one extreme. DF2 represents the opposite kind of result, with stars accounting for nearly all of the measured mass.
A careful explanation should therefore separate three questions:
- Is the object faint? Imaging and surface-brightness measurements address this.
- Is there an extended dark-matter halo? Rotation, orbital motions or lensing address the gravitational mass.
- What fraction of the total mass is dark matter? That requires comparing the inferred total mass with the mass in stars and other detectable ordinary matter.
Answering the first question does not automatically answer the third. A low-light galaxy can be dark-matter rich, dark-matter poor or somewhere between those cases.

Is a dark galaxy the same thing as a dark-matter halo?
No. A halo is the surrounding invisible mass structure; a dark galaxy is the faint galactic system. The halo is defined by the gravitational mass that extends around a galaxy, whereas the galaxy is identified as an object with unusually weak or diffuse visible emission.
The relationship is similar to the difference between an atmosphere and a planet: one describes an extended surrounding component, while the other names the larger system that contains it. The analogy is only about levels of description; a dark-matter halo is inferred from gravity, not seen as a luminous shell.
Why the distinction matters when reading astronomy reports
It prevents misleading “invisible galaxy” headlines
A report may say that a galaxy is dark because its light is exceptionally faint. That does not mean the galaxy emits no light at all, nor does it prove that dark matter makes up nearly all of its mass. The observational details—diffuse light, globular clusters, stellar motions or lensing—tell you which meaning is intended.
It keeps mass and luminosity separate
Luminosity measures emitted light. Mass estimates come from gravity. CDG-2’s roughly 6-million-Sun luminosity and its preliminary 99% dark-matter estimate are different measurements answering different questions. DF2’s very low star count and its low inferred dark-matter content make the same point from the opposite direction.
It clarifies the role of lensing
Weak lensing can map a halo even when the associated galaxy is faint, because the method measures distortions in background galaxies caused by foreground mass. A lensing map therefore traces the halo’s gravitational influence; it is not a photograph of a dark galaxy.
The broader cosmic context
NASA’s 2025 summary of the universe’s composition assigns approximately 5% to ordinary matter, 27% to dark matter and 68% to dark energy. These percentages describe the cosmic budget as a whole, not the composition of one particular galaxy. They explain why dark matter is central to galaxy studies, but they cannot be used to infer the dark-matter fraction of CDG-2, DF2 or any other individual object.
A quick way to classify a statement
- Look for the noun. If the statement names a surrounding mass distribution, it is discussing a halo. If it names a faint, diffuse object, it is discussing a galaxy.
- Identify the evidence. Rotation curves, orbital speeds and lensing indicate gravitational mass. Surface brightness, sparse stars and globular-cluster detections indicate a faint galaxy.
- Check whether the percentage is measured or assumed. A dark-galaxy label does not supply a dark-matter percentage. Look for a dynamical or lensing analysis.
- Read the qualification. “Preliminary,” an observing date and the instruments used matter, especially for extreme estimates such as CDG-2’s approximately 99% value.
In one sentence: a dark-matter halo is the invisible gravitational envelope around a galaxy, while a dark galaxy is a galaxy whose visible light is exceptionally faint or diffuse; only measurements of its dynamics or lensing reveal how dark-matter rich it actually is.
