Dark matter and dark energy are not the same thing. Dark matter is the name for an unseen form of matter inferred from gravity: its pull helps hold galaxies together and provides a framework for galaxies and clusters to form. Dark energy is the name for whatever is causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate. The shared word “dark” only means that neither is directly seen in ordinary light; it does not identify a common substance.
Scientists can measure the effects of both, but the physical identity of neither is settled. NASA estimates that dark energy makes up approximately 68.3 to 70 percent of the universe and dark matter roughly 25 percent. Those are rounded explanatory estimates, not direct inventories of known particles or a completed explanation of either phenomenon.
Dark matter and dark energy at a glance
| Comparison | Dark matter | Dark energy |
|---|---|---|
| What the term describes | A type of matter inferred from gravitational effects; NASA describes it as not emitting, absorbing or reflecting light in the ordinary way. | A name for whatever causes the observed accelerated expansion of the universe; its physical nature is unknown. |
| Main observed role | Its gravity helps hold galaxies together and supplies a framework on which galaxies and clusters form. | It is associated with the acceleration of cosmic expansion on the largest scales. |
| Where its influence is emphasized | Within and around galaxies, and in the structures formed by groups and clusters of galaxies. | Across the universe rather than as a component concentrated inside individual galaxies or clusters. |
| How scientists infer it | By mapping and measuring gravitational effects that visible matter alone does not adequately explain. | By measuring the history of cosmic expansion, including observations of distant Type Ia supernovae that appeared dimmer than expected. |
| Approximate share in NASA explainers | Roughly 25 percent. | Approximately 68.3 to 70 percent. |
| What remains unresolved | The underlying physical identity of the gravitating matter has not been confirmed. | Scientists know the expansion is accelerating, but not what the underlying cause is. |
The useful dividing line is simple: dark matter adds gravity and helps build structure; dark energy is the unknown cause associated with accelerating expansion. Treating dark energy as merely “anti-dark matter” or as an ordinary repulsive force between nearby objects leads to the wrong picture.

What dark matter is
An inference from gravity, not a directly photographed object
Dark matter is called “matter” because the evidence points to mass that contributes gravitationally. It is called “dark” because it does not emit, absorb or reflect light in the ordinary way described by NASA. Telescopes therefore do not make a conventional image of a dark-matter particle or cloud. Instead, astronomers measure how visible objects move and how structures assemble, then infer the additional gravitational influence required by those observations.

NASA summarizes the idea in a compact sentence: “Dark matter is a mysterious type of matter that holds galaxies together.” The wording is important. It states an observed role, not a confirmed chemical composition. A map of its gravitational influence is not the same as a laboratory identification of what the matter is made of.
Why galaxies need its gravitational influence
Stars and gas in a galaxy orbit a common center. Their motions reveal how much mass is exerting gravity. The visible material alone does not account for all of the gravitational influence inferred in the standard account, so scientists attribute the additional pull to dark matter. That extra mass helps keep galaxies bound instead of allowing their visible contents to disperse.
The same idea operates on a larger scale. Dark matter’s gravitational influence provides a framework on which galaxies and clusters can form. In this description, dark matter is not a decorative label for invisible stars; it is a component whose gravity affects where luminous matter gathers and how large-scale structure develops.
What “dark” does—and does not—mean
- It does not mean the material is simply black or hidden behind dust. Dust can block light, whereas dark matter is defined here by its lack of ordinary electromagnetic visibility and by its gravitational effects.
- It does not mean scientists have proved that dark matter is one particular particle. The observations establish the gravitational behavior; the physical identity remains open.
- It does not mean dark matter has no effects. Its gravity is the reason astronomers can study it indirectly.
What dark energy is
A name for the cause of accelerated expansion
The universe is expanding, and observations indicate that this expansion is accelerating. Dark energy is the name scientists give to the unknown cause associated with that acceleration. NASA’s concise answer to “What is dark energy?” is: “The short answer is: We don’t know.” In context, that statement concerns the nature of dark energy, not whether its cosmic effect has been observed.
Acceleration means the expansion rate changes so that the universe becomes larger at an increasing rate. It does not describe an everyday push between two nearby objects, and it should not be pictured as a conventional repulsive force acting like a magnet with the polarity reversed. The term identifies an unexplained cosmic behavior and the placeholder used for its cause.

A large-scale, broadly distributed effect
NASA’s explainers contrast dark energy with dark matter by describing dark energy as spread broadly through the universe rather than concentrated in galaxies or clusters. That distinction is about the scale at which each term is useful. Dark matter’s gravitational role is especially apparent in bound structures; dark energy is invoked when describing the expansion history of the universe as a whole.
This broad distribution does not tell scientists what dark energy is made of. It is a description of how the phenomenon is treated in cosmological models while its physical explanation remains unknown.
How the evidence differs
Evidence for dark matter: gravitational effects
Dark matter is inferred from gravity. Astronomers examine the motions and organization of galaxies and clusters and ask whether the visible matter can account for the observed gravitational behavior. Where it cannot, the standard explanation includes an additional, non-luminous matter component.
This method is indirect but testable: the inferred mass must produce gravitational effects in the places and on the scales where the structures are observed. The result is a body of evidence about what dark matter does, even though it is not a direct detection of its microscopic identity.
Evidence for dark energy: the expansion history
The key evidence highlighted by NASA comes from distant Type Ia supernovae. These supernovae have a predictable luminosity, so their apparent brightness can be compared with how far away they are and how much their light has been shifted by cosmic expansion. Two teams reported in 1998 that distant Type Ia supernovae were dimmer than expected at a given redshift. The observations indicated that the universe’s expansion was accelerating rather than simply slowing under gravity.

Adam Riess, Saul Perlmutter and Brian Schmidt received the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work on the accelerating expansion of the universe. The supernova observations established the acceleration that needs explaining; they did not identify a particle or substance responsible for it. “Dark energy” is the name assigned to that unresolved cause.

Dark matter helps structure form
In the standard account, dark matter’s gravity creates or reinforces the framework in which visible matter can collect. Galaxies and clusters are therefore discussed as structures whose formation is shaped by an unseen mass component. Its influence is attractive in the gravitational sense: it helps bind matter into organized systems.
Dark energy is linked to expansion accelerating
Dark energy enters the story when the question changes from “Why does this galaxy remain together?” to “How is the scale of the universe changing over time?” The observed answer is that expansion is accelerating. Dark energy labels whatever produces or explains that behavior in the prevailing cosmological description.
Why the two terms are easy to confuse
Both are invisible in ordinary light, both dominate discussions of the universe’s contents, and both are known primarily through their effects rather than through a simple photograph. Those similarities explain the shared adjective “dark.” They do not imply that the two phenomena are interchangeable, made of the same material or opposite versions of one force.
Cosmic percentages—and how to read them
NASA educational explainers give dark energy an approximate share of 68.3 to 70 percent and dark matter a share of roughly 25 percent. These figures are useful for conveying the scale of the two components: together they account for most of the measured contents used in the standard cosmic inventory.

- They are estimates, not exact counts. The dark-energy figure is presented as a range, and the dark-matter figure is explicitly rounded.
- They describe modeled cosmic contents. The percentages are not a direct weighing of known dark-energy material or a census of identified dark-matter particles.
- They do not settle identity. A component can have a well-measured influence while its underlying nature remains unknown.
- Do not mix the figures with a different dataset without checking definitions. Values can be quoted differently when a source uses a different model, rounding convention or set of observations.
For this reason, write “approximately,” “roughly” or “NASA estimates,” and keep the qualification attached to the number. “Dark energy is 70 percent” is broader and more certain than the evidence warrants; “NASA gives an approximate range of 68.3 to 70 percent” preserves what the figure means.

“Dark” means the same substance
No. “Dark” refers to the lack of direct visibility in ordinary light. Dark matter is treated as a matter component inferred from gravity. Dark energy is a name for the unknown cause of accelerated expansion. The terms answer different scientific questions.
Dark energy is simply a repulsive force
That shortcut can mislead. NASA’s accessible definition is the unknown cause associated with accelerated expansion, not a familiar force acting between two objects. The evidence concerns the behavior of the universe on cosmic scales, so an everyday force analogy should not be treated as a literal identification.
Dark matter is just ordinary matter that telescopes cannot see
Ordinary matter can be hidden by distance, darkness or dust, but dark matter is discussed as a distinct component because its inferred gravitational effects are not accounted for by the visible material alone. Calling it “dark” does not turn it into an inventory of unseen stars, planets or dust clouds.

Accelerating expansion means every galaxy is flying apart internally
The statement concerns the expansion of the universe on cosmic scales. Bound systems such as galaxies are discussed separately because dark matter’s gravitational role helps hold them together. The term “accelerating expansion” should not be read as a claim that the stars inside a stable galaxy are being pulled apart by dark energy.
What scientists know—and what remains unknown
Established effects
- There is gravitational behavior associated with galaxies and clusters that the visible matter alone does not adequately describe in the standard account.
- Dark matter is used to represent the unseen mass whose gravity helps hold galaxies together and supports the formation of large-scale structure.
- Distant Type Ia supernova observations showed that the universe’s expansion is accelerating rather than simply slowing under gravity.
- Dark energy is the name assigned to the unknown cause associated with that acceleration.
Unresolved identities
- NASA’s dark-energy explanation is explicit that scientists do not know what dark energy is.
- Dark matter is described through its gravitational influence and structural role, not as a confirmed physical species.
- The labels therefore separate two measured patterns without pretending that either mystery has been solved.
This distinction between effect and identity is central to reading popular cosmology accurately. “We know dark matter exists” can be shorthand for confidence in the gravitational component used to explain observations; it should not be taken to mean that a particular dark-matter particle has been conclusively identified. Likewise, evidence for accelerated expansion is not the same as a laboratory discovery of dark energy.
A practical way to remember the difference
- Ask what is changing. If the question is about a galaxy staying together or a cluster forming, dark matter is the relevant term.
- Ask what scale is being discussed. Dark matter is emphasized in and around structures; dark energy is discussed across the universe’s expansion history.
- Ask what was measured. Dark matter is inferred from gravitational effects; dark energy is inferred from observations showing expansion accelerates.
- Keep the unknown attached to the name. Dark matter’s physical identity is not confirmed in these explanations, and dark energy’s nature is expressly unknown.
- Treat percentages as approximate model estimates. NASA’s figures are roughly 25 percent for dark matter and approximately 68.3 to 70 percent for dark energy.
Why the distinction matters
Separating the terms prevents two opposite errors. First, it stops readers from assuming that an invisible mass holding galaxies together must also be the cause of accelerated expansion. Second, it prevents the phrase “dark energy” from being mistaken for a discovered substance with a known composition. The two concepts occupy different roles in the standard account: one supplies gravitational structure, while the other names the unresolved cause of a changing expansion rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat division also explains why scientists can be confident about some statements and cautious about others. The supernova evidence supports acceleration; galaxy and cluster behavior supports an unseen gravitational component. Neither observation, by itself, supplies a complete physical identity. A careful explanation therefore says what was observed, what effect is modeled, and where the unknown begins.
