Watch Daredevil Seasons 1–3 first, place The Defenders between Seasons 2 and 3, then follow Matt Murdock through Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Echo and Daredevil: Born Again. That order preserves the Matt Murdock–Wilson Fisk story, explains the returning supporting cast and gives you the context needed for Fisk’s later political campaign.
The older Defenders-era series occupy the early-to-middle part of the MCU timeline. Born Again is best understood as a continuation integrated into the current MCU calendar, not a clean reboot or an officially numbered fourth season.
Where Daredevil fits in the MCU
Daredevil’s story has two connected periods. The first is the street-level New York saga that began with the original series and crossed into The Defenders. The second begins when Matt reappears in later Marvel Studios projects and leads into Born Again.
| Story point | MCU placement | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Daredevil Season 1 | After I Am Groot Season 2 and before Avengers: Age of Ultron in Hulu’s chronological guide | Matt Murdock’s legal practice, vigilante identity and first war with Wilson Fisk |
| Daredevil Season 2 | After Ant-Man | The Punisher conflict, Elektra’s return and the setup for the Defenders crossover |
| The Defenders and connected shows | Between Daredevil Seasons 2 and 3 | Matt’s alliance with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand |
| Daredevil Season 3 | After Jessica Jones Season 2, Luke Cage Season 2 and Iron Fist Season 2 | The conclusion of the original solo arc and Matt’s last pre-MCU-reentry status quo |
| Later appearances | Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, then Echo | Matt’s return to the wider MCU and his renewed connection to Kingpin |
| Daredevil: Born Again | Approximately 2025–2027; the exact year is not stated as a single definitive date | A continuation involving Matt, Fisk, Karen Page, Foggy Nelson and Frank Castle |
The early dates are relative rather than calendar-stamped. Hulu’s guide places the first season before Age of Ultron and the second after Ant-Man; the ordering is more reliable than assigning a precise year to every episode.

The original Daredevil and Defenders chronology
Daredevil Season 1: the foundation
Season 1 introduces Matt Murdock as a blind attorney who protects Hell’s Kitchen at night. His professional partnership with Foggy Nelson and Karen Page’s investigation into a hidden criminal network lead to Wilson Fisk, the businessman secretly consolidating New York’s underworld. Fisk is not just an early villain; he is the personal and ideological counterweight that drives the entire Daredevil story.
Hulu’s chronological guide puts this season after I Am Groot Season 2 and before Avengers: Age of Ultron. That placement explains why the series feels smaller than the films while still sharing the same city and post-Avengers world: its conflicts are local, but the consequences of the larger MCU are part of the background.
Jessica Jones Season 1: parallel street-level context
Jessica Jones Season 1 occupies roughly the same early Defenders-era period as Daredevil Season 1. It is not required to follow Matt’s personal plot, but it establishes Jessica’s investigative work and the trauma that shape her role in the eventual team-up.
Daredevil Season 2: the bridge season
Season 2 follows Ant-Man in Hulu’s sequence. Matt’s conflict with Frank Castle, known as the Punisher, changes the show’s moral argument: Matt believes in restraint and the legal system, while Castle believes lethal force is the only dependable answer. Elektra and the Hand then widen the story from organized crime to a supernatural-tinged conspiracy.

Most importantly for watch order, Season 2 ends with unresolved personal and organizational consequences that continue in The Defenders. Watching the crossover later than Season 3 makes Matt’s emotional and physical condition harder to follow.
Luke Cage Season 1 and Iron Fist Season 1
Hulu places the first seasons of Luke Cage and Iron Fist after Daredevil Season 2 and before The Defenders. Luke brings Harlem’s community-focused perspective, while Danny Rand supplies the mystical history that becomes important to the Hand storyline. Neither season is a sequel to Matt’s show, but both introduce members of the team he will need.
The Defenders: the crossover hinge
The Defenders is the practical midpoint of the original Daredevil arc. Matt, Jessica, Luke and Danny investigate the Hand’s New York operation and are forced to work together despite incompatible methods and personalities. The finale directly sets up the physical and emotional circumstances of Daredevil Season 3.
The shows between the crossover and Season 3
Hulu’s sequence places Jessica Jones Season 2, Luke Cage Season 2 and Iron Fist Season 2 before Daredevil Season 3. These seasons continue the wider Defenders characters and show how the city and its heroes respond to the crossover. They are optional for a Daredevil-only marathon, but they preserve the ensemble continuity.

Daredevil Season 3: the original solo endpoint
Season 3 comes after those second seasons in Hulu’s chronology and before Thor: Ragnarok and The Punisher Season 2 in the same guide. Matt is recovering from the Defenders finale while Fisk works to regain influence. The season closes the first major Matt–Fisk confrontation and leaves the characters in the position from which later MCU appearances can grow.
Why The Defenders matters before Born Again
You can understand the main plot of Born Again without watching every Defenders-era episode, but skipping the crossover removes the explanation for Matt’s disappearance, his injuries and the shift in his relationship with Foggy and Karen. It also weakens the significance of the Hand and the personal cost of Matt’s decision to keep fighting.
For a focused route, watch all three Daredevil seasons and then read a short synopsis of The Defenders before Season 3. For the fullest continuity, watch the connected seasons in their chronological position. The crossover itself is the one non-Daredevil title that most directly affects Matt’s biography.

How Matt returns to the wider MCU
Spider-Man: No Way Home
Matt’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home is brief but establishes that he is active as a lawyer in the post-Season 3 MCU. The scene is a continuity signal rather than a new Daredevil adventure: it confirms that the character’s identity and legal profession carried forward.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
She-Hulk expands Matt’s role as both attorney and vigilante. It shows how his work can intersect with another super-powered lawyer and gives viewers a lighter, more openly connected view of his place in the MCU. Watch it after No Way Home if you want his re-entry to unfold in release-like order.
Echo
Echo reconnects Matt’s world with Wilson Fisk’s criminal network. Fisk’s presence makes the series especially relevant before Born Again, because it demonstrates that the old rivalry remains active beyond the original show. It also helps explain why Fisk can move from underworld influence toward public power.
Is Born Again Season 4?
Officially, Daredevil: Born Again is a new series title, not Daredevil Season 4. Creatively, however, it continues the same characters and history. Disney describes it as a continuation of Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk’s story, with Karen Page, Foggy Nelson and Frank Castle returning.

Born Again’s approximate place in time
GamesRadar’s chronology places a 2025 prologue before the main Born Again story, which is approximately set in 2026–2027. Marvel has not presented one definitive on-screen calendar year for every event, so treat those dates as an informed placement rather than an exact timestamp.
The gap matters because Matt and Fisk are not simply resuming the jobs they had at the end of Season 3. Their institutions, alliances and public reputations have changed. The time jump gives the series room to show consequences instead of replaying the original origin story.
Kingpin’s move from crime boss to mayor
Disney’s March 23, 2026 Season 2 feature describes Wilson Fisk as the newly elected mayor of New York City. He has outlawed vigilantism, turning Daredevil’s activities into a direct challenge to city policy rather than only an underground fight.

Matt must contend with enforcement, public legitimacy and political messaging while Fisk can use the authority of government to pursue an anti-vigilante campaign. Executive producer Sana Amanat summarized the creative focus by saying, “Every great Daredevil story is ultimately a great Kingpin story.”
Showrunner Dario Scardapane has said that each character must choose a side and pay a price. In practical terms, the political premise tests Matt’s commitment to law, Fisk’s claim to lawful authority and the supporting characters’ willingness to stand with either man.
Recommended watch orders
| Option | Titles | Time and context |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum coherent Daredevil route |
|
Fastest route; preserves Matt’s personal arc and his direct MCU appearances |
| Recommended continuity route | Daredevil Season 1; Jessica Jones Season 1; Daredevil Season 2; Luke Cage Season 1; Iron Fist Season 1; The Defenders; Jessica Jones Season 2; Luke Cage Season 2; Iron Fist Season 2; Daredevil Season 3; then the three MCU re-entry appearances and Born Again | Retains the main ensemble context while keeping Daredevil central |
| Full Defenders-era route | Add The Punisher Season 1 and later Defenders-era seasons where they fall in Hulu’s chronological list | Most character context; longest commitment and least necessary material for Matt’s direct plot |
The minimum route is enough to understand who Matt and Fisk are, why they are connected and how Matt returns to the MCU. The complete route is worthwhile if you want the ensemble story around The Defenders, especially the Hand, Elektra, Frank Castle, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand.
A practical step-by-step viewing plan
- Start with Daredevil Seasons 1 and 2. This establishes Matt’s values, Fisk’s methods, Foggy and Karen’s roles, Frank Castle’s opposing philosophy and Elektra’s importance.
- Watch the crossover before Season 3. At minimum, watch The Defenders; add the first seasons of Luke Cage and Iron Fist if you want the introductions to feel earned.
- Complete Daredevil Season 3. Do not place it before The Defenders, because its opening circumstances depend on the crossover finale.
- Move to Matt’s MCU appearances. Watch No Way Home, then She-Hulk, then Echo. These appearances are short compared with the original series but establish the modern status quo.
- Watch Born Again after Echo. This gives Fisk’s return and Matt’s renewed public life the clearest progression.
What is confirmed and what remains approximate
- Confirmed continuity: Disney presents Born Again as a continuation of Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk’s story, with major original characters returning.
- Confirmed crossover position: The Defenders belongs between Daredevil Seasons 2 and 3 in the practical viewing order.
- Confirmed re-entry path: Matt appears in No Way Home, She-Hulk and Echo before Born Again.
- Approximate dating: The strongest current placement is a 2025 prologue and a main story around 2026–2027; the shows do not supply a single authoritative year for every event.
- Not an official label: “Season 4” describes the continuity, not the title used by Marvel Studios.
The bottom line on Daredevil’s MCU connections
Daredevil Seasons 1–3 are the essential foundation. The Defenders is the key bridge between Seasons 2 and 3, while the other Defenders shows add ensemble context rather than mandatory Matt-specific plot. After Season 3, follow Matt through Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo. Born Again then continues the same Matt–Fisk relationship in a later MCU era, where Fisk’s election as mayor turns their private war into a public fight over whether vigilantism has a place in New York.
