Danu Robotics is developing AI-guided industrial robots to sort dry mixed recyclables at materials recovery facilities (MRFs). Its Edinburgh-based founder, Xiaoyan (Amy) Ma, is tackling a demanding problem: making automated picking accurate, reliable and cost-effective enough to work on real conveyor lines. Published prototype figures are promising, but they are not the same as independently verified results from customer sites.
What Danu Robotics is building
Danu Robotics designs robotic sorting systems for MRFs, where mixed recycling moves along conveyor belts and must be separated into usable material streams. The company says its H.E.R.O. series—short for “High-performance, Environmentally friendly, Reconfigurable Operator”—uses computer vision and AI to identify recyclable items and contaminants, then directs robot arms to pick objects from the belt. Its stated focus is dry mixed recyclables, not household or consumer use. (Danu Robotics; Danu Robotics technology)
Danu presents H.E.R.O. as a retrofit for existing facilities, intended to work alongside human sorters with limited disruption. The company says its two-arm system needs less than one metre of conveyor space and can be installed in less than a day. Those are product specifications and installation claims from Danu, not independent measurements of fit or downtime at a particular MRF. (Danu Robotics technology; H.E.R.O. Series 2)
How the AI-guided picking system works
The basic process links software to physical handling: cameras and computer-vision software analyze material on the belt; the system identifies an item or contaminant; and robot arms attempt to move it to a destination bin. Danu’s early development work involved building a waste-image database and machine-learning software to recognize recyclable and contaminant materials. The University of Edinburgh’s computing centre, EPCC, says its Cirrus supercomputer was used to process data and train the software. (EPCC’s account)

That recognition-to-pick chain is why counting arm movements alone can be misleading. Danu says it logs a pick only once an object reaches the bin, and argues that meaningful performance should be measured in successful picks per day. A system may move quickly yet deliver less value if it misses items, places them in the wrong stream, or spends substantial time offline. (Danu Robotics technology)
What the published performance figures do—and do not—show
A 2024 Edinburgh Innovations profile reports prototype figures for Danu: up to 40 picks per minute, below 1% contamination, and a reported range of 30% to 100% operating-cost savings. The same profile gives 10–20 picks per minute as the average for trained human operators. These figures are attributed to the prototype and the profile; they should not be read as guaranteed rates, results for every waste stream, or independently confirmed outcomes at deployed customer facilities. The profile does not provide a test protocol, sample size, material mix, named facility result, or independent verification for those numbers. The cost-saving range is not tied to a specified facility or manual-work baseline. As a result, the figures indicate the performance Danu’s prototype was reported to achieve, but do not establish what an operator should expect from a particular installation.

Why real-world adoption is the hard part
MRFs need sorting equipment that works under variable conditions and contributes to saleable, correctly separated output. For a robot, the question is not simply whether it can recognize a target or move an arm at speed; it is whether the entire system keeps producing reliable results amid the facility’s actual material mix and operating schedule. Danu itself frames adoption around efficiency, accuracy, reliability and cost effectiveness.

For a facility operator evaluating automation, useful measures include:
- Sorting quality: the correctly sorted material and contamination rate for each relevant stream.
- Successful output: objects that reach the intended bin, rather than attempted or raw arm picks.
- Daily throughput: performance over a full operating day, including interruptions.
- Availability and upkeep: downtime, maintenance needs and replacement of wear parts.
- Installation impact: space, line changes and disruption during retrofit.
- Total operating cost: compared with a clearly defined manual baseline and the same operating conditions.
Danu says high-wear grippers can be changed in 20 minutes and that about 90% of its robotic systems can be recycled. These are company-stated maintenance and design claims; the cited product information does not supply an independent lifecycle assessment or details about parts compatibility. From university computing work to customer deployments
2021–2023: building the software foundation
The University of Edinburgh identifies Ma as Danu’s founder and says she completed an MSc in High Performance Computing with Data Science in 2021. In January 2023, EPCC described the company’s collaboration with the university computing centre: creating a waste-image database, developing machine-learning software, and using the Cirrus supercomputer to process data and train it. EPCC reported that Danu was then undertaking two months of lab tests to integrate its software with robot hardware, followed by a planned three-month prototype trial at Glasgow City Council’s recycling centre. That article records a plan at the time; it does not establish whether the trial took place or what it achieved. Ma said of EPCC’s support: “The help of EPCC has been tremendous and definitely provided significant professional software engineering support to help drive the project forward.” (EPCC, January 2023)

2024–2025: reported progress and deployments
Edinburgh Innovations published the prototype performance figures in 2024. The National Robotarium’s 2025 annual report later said Danu moved into the facility in 2024, manufactured systems there, and began deploying them to customers in the UK, EU and Canada. This is evidence of reported customer deployments, but the report does not provide named sites or operating results that independently verify performance across those installations. What remains to be established
The available accounts show a development path from university-supported machine-learning work to reported customer deployments. They do not establish how Danu’s systems perform across customer sites over time. A fuller operational picture would require site-specific data such as installation dates, material streams, operating periods, contamination and recovery results, uptime, maintenance, and comparison with a defined manual-sorting baseline.
That distinction matters for any emerging industrial technology: prototype claims can demonstrate potential, while facility-level results determine whether the equipment delivers consistent value in practice.
