To use a DAC with a computer, connect it to a compatible computer port, select it as the computer’s audio output, and—if the DAC has an input selector—choose its USB input. Then connect headphones, speakers, or an amplifier to the DAC’s output. The cable, power, driver, and supported audio formats depend on the specific DAC, so check its manual rather than assuming every model works the same way.
Before connecting: check ports, cable, and power
Find the DAC’s computer input and the ports available on your computer. Match the cable connectors to both ends: some DACs use USB-B, while computers may have USB-A or USB-C ports. A USB-A-to-USB-B cable is one model-specific example, not a universal requirement; consult your DAC’s manual for the correct connection and power instructions. Cambridge Audio’s DacMagic 100 manual illustrates why instructions should be checked for the exact model.
Connect the DAC to the computer and power it as specified by its manufacturer. If you are connecting through USB-C, confirm that the port and cable support the connection you need. If an adapter is involved, distinguish a digital-audio adapter from an analog one: Microsoft says most PCs support USB-C digital audio adapters, which perform digital-to-analog conversion. During troubleshooting, connect directly to the computer where possible to rule out a hub, and check whether the DAC or adapter needs additional power. See Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.
Select the DAC as the computer’s audio output
On a Mac
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Sound, then open Output.
- Choose the DAC from the available sound-output devices. Apple notes that connected USB audio devices can appear in this list. Apple’s Mac sound-output instructions show the setting.
On Windows
- Open Settings and go to System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the DAC.
- If needed, set the USB audio device as the default playback device using the Windows sound controls. Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guide covers output selection and device checks.
On the DAC
If the DAC has an input or source selector, choose its USB input. The computer may detect the device even while the DAC is set to listen to a different input. Once the computer and DAC are both set to the USB connection, make sure your headphones, speakers, or amplifier are connected to the DAC’s appropriate output.

When to adjust audio formats or install a driver
Check formats only if necessary
On a Mac, open Audio MIDI Setup to view available audio devices and their format options. Depending on the selected device, macOS may expose sample-rate and bit-depth controls; available choices vary by DAC. Choose a format supported by both the DAC and the playback setup, using the manufacturer’s documentation as the reference. Apple’s Audio MIDI Setup guide explains the device options.
On Windows, a manufacturer’s driver may be required for some DACs or particular USB audio modes. For example, Cambridge Audio says its USB Audio Class 2 setup can require a maker-provided driver on certain models. Check the instructions for your exact DAC; do not install a driver intended for another model.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Match the format to the specific device
If playback fails only at a high sample rate, check the supported formats for both the DAC and computer, then try a lower setting if the manufacturer recommends it. Cambridge Audio’s USB troubleshooting page includes a 384 kHz-or-lower recommendation for a particular network-player setup; that figure is not a general limit for computer DACs. Read the model-specific troubleshooting advice before applying any format limit to your equipment.
Fix common DAC connection problems
The DAC powers on, but there is no sound
- Confirm that the computer’s selected output is the DAC, not the built-in speakers or another device.
- Check that the DAC’s source selector is set to USB.
- Check the downstream connection: headphones, speakers, or an amplifier must be plugged into the DAC output you intend to use.
The DAC does not appear in the output list
- Try another compatible USB port and cable.
- Connect directly to the computer while diagnosing a hub or dock.
- On Windows, open Device Manager and check whether the audio device or its driver is missing, disabled, outdated, or reporting a problem. Follow the DAC maker’s driver instructions and restart if appropriate.
- For USB-C, verify that the adapter is for digital audio and that the port, cable, and power arrangement are compatible.
Sound stopped after a restart, crash, or update
Recheck the operating system’s output selection before concluding that the DAC has failed. Cambridge Audio documents a DacMagic 100 case in which the unit can remain powered while macOS switches playback back to its internal speakers after a computer crash or update. The example is specific to that model, but checking System Settings > Sound > Output is a useful first step for other Mac-connected USB DACs too. Cambridge Audio’s DacMagic 100 guidance describes that situation.

Audio fails only with a particular format
Check the DAC’s published format support and the computer’s selected playback format. Try a lower supported setting only when the manufacturer’s instructions point to a format mismatch; do not assume a figure given for another product or setup applies to your DAC.
