D-Wave announced on 15 October 2026 that its Advantage2 quantum-annealing computer had arrived at Villa Saporiti in Como, Lombardy. Named VoltaB1 within the Q-Alliance ecosystem, it is described as Italy’s first on-premises annealing quantum computer and is scheduled for formal inauguration on 16 October.
What arrived in Italy
The installation is a D-Wave Advantage2 system, a quantum annealer designed primarily for difficult optimization problems rather than the gate-based operations used by universal quantum-computing platforms. It arrived in Lombardy for installation at Villa Saporiti in Como. Q-Alliance uses the name VoltaB1 for the system.
D-Wave’s 15 October 2026 announcement calls the machine Italy’s first on-premises annealing quantum computer. “On-premises” means the physical processor is located in Italy, giving participating organizations access to local infrastructure instead of relying exclusively on a distant cloud data center. The scheduled inauguration on 16 October 2026 marks the public launch phase; commissioning and configuration still determine when regular users can run workloads.

In an annealer, a problem is translated into a mathematical form in which low-energy states represent good solutions. The hardware searches that landscape repeatedly, producing candidate solutions that can then be checked and refined with classical software. A larger qubit count does not automatically make an annealer equivalent to a gate-model machine with the same number of qubits: connectivity, coupler precision, embedding overhead and the structure of the specific problem all affect practical performance.

D-Wave describes Advantage2 as using a lower-noise fabrication stack, higher energy scales, longer coherence and lower noise than the previous Advantage generation. Those are vendor specifications, not independent measurements of VoltaB1 after its installation in Como. D-Wave also says the platform has demonstrated an advantage over classical computing on a difficult materials-simulation problem; that statement should be understood as a D-Wave claim rather than an independently verified result for the Italian system.
How the €10 million agreement allocates access
Swiss Quantum Technology SA (SQT) is financing the deployment through a €10 million agreement. Under the arrangement, SQT acquired 50% of the system’s capacity for five years and holds an option to purchase the entire system. The announcement does not specify how the remaining capacity will be divided among other participants.

Once configuration is complete, the machine is intended to serve European researchers, universities and companies. Access is planned in two forms:
- Physical access: participating organizations can use infrastructure installed at Villa Saporiti, subject to the operating and scheduling rules established by the owners and Q-Alliance.
- Remote access: users can submit work through D-Wave’s Leap cloud service. D-Wave’s support information lists Italy as a country supported by Leap.
The announcement does not publish user prices, queue policies, service-level commitments or a date when general applications will open. Organizations should therefore treat access as an announced capability, not as a guarantee of immediate unrestricted capacity.

Why Q-Alliance is building a physical hub
Q-Alliance presents VoltaB1 as infrastructure for Italian and wider European quantum-computing research. The stated program combines university and researcher access with workforce development, allowing students and technical teams to work with a physical annealer rather than only simulations or classroom demonstrations.
The longer-term objective is to move beyond training and exploratory research toward production applications in industry. A local installation can make it easier to run repeatable experiments, bring domain specialists into the development process and keep sensitive problem data within an agreed European operating environment. Those benefits depend on commissioning, governance and useful workloads; the announcement does not yet report customer outcomes from the Como machine.

Which Italian problems are being targeted?
D-Wave chief executive Alan Baratz identified logistics, shipping and manufacturing as areas where Italian organizations may benefit from quantum annealing. In an ANSAcom interview published 15 October 2026, Baratz said: “Potranno risolvere questi problemi molto più velocemente, con soluzioni, se non ottimali, che migliorano le loro attività”. In English, he said companies could solve such problems much faster, obtaining solutions that improve their operations even when those solutions are not mathematically optimal.

That is an executive view, not an independently measured result. For a company considering the system, the relevant question is whether a particular scheduling, routing, allocation or production model can be represented efficiently and whether repeated runs improve a meaningful business metric.

How a company should evaluate access
- Define the decision problem: specify variables, constraints, objectives and the cost of an imperfect solution. “Optimization” alone is not enough to determine suitability.
- Build a classical baseline: record the quality, runtime and operating cost of the best existing method. Without this baseline, a quantum claim cannot be evaluated.
- Test a representative instance: use problem sizes and constraints that resemble real operations, not a simplified demonstration that omits the hardest requirements.
- Measure business outcomes: compare solution quality, time to a usable answer, repeatability and integration effort. A quantum result can be valuable without being provably optimal, but the improvement must be material.
- Plan the hybrid workflow: annealing hardware is normally combined with classical preprocessing, embedding, post-processing and operational systems. Include those costs in the assessment.
VoltaB1’s significance is therefore infrastructural: Italy now has a locally installed Advantage2 annealer connected to a funding and access framework. Whether it delivers an advantage for a specific logistics, shipping or manufacturing workload remains to be established through independent testing and customer deployments.
