D-Link lists DIR-822A firmware A_101 as affected by CVE-2026-86510, and the published record currently provides no vendor fix or workaround. D-Link says it is investigating. Until the vendor updates its guidance, verify your exact hardware and firmware, reduce unnecessary network exposure, and watch the support page for your region.
What CVE-2026-86510 affects
D-Link’s SAP10516 security notice, published September 18, 2026 and updated September 21, lists the DIR-822A with reported firmware version A_101. The vendor identifies an out-of-bounds write in the L2TP Control Message Parser’s tunnel_set_params function. The CVE record classifies the issue under CWE-787 and CWE-119.
The CVE-2026-86510 record describes a network-reachable issue requiring low privileges. That description does not establish that exploitation is unauthenticated, nor does it show that every DIR-822A deployment exposes the affected parser in the same way.

These are separate ratings using different CVSS versions; neither should be substituted for the other.

- AC2600 WiFi Speeds - Watch your favorite movies in 4K, game online, and video chat with friends. The DIR-2640 has plenty of bandwidth along with fast AC2600 dual band Wi-Fi, MU-MIMO and Smart Connect for a smooth, buffer-free online experience.
- More Processing Power - A powerful dual-core processor sits at the heart of your router, accelerating every thread and application with strong performance throughout your network.
- Set Boundaries with Enhanced Parental Controls - Create a profile for each person, then associate devices with each profile to control when and how they access the network. You can even use a profile to control internet access for shared devices, like game consoles and smart TVs.
- More Processing Power - A powerful dual-core processor sits at the heart of your router, accelerating every thread and application with strong performance throughout your network.
- Reliable Gigabit Wired Performance - Connect four devices to enjoy a strong and reliable wired connection with minimal latency - perfect for connecting Android boxes, smart TVs and game consoles.
Is there a patch or workaround?
As of the CVE record’s publication on September 8, 2026, it lists no vendor fix or workaround. D-Link’s later notice says the issue is under investigation, so this is the current published status—not a statement that a patch will never be released. The affected hardware revision and geographic scope are also still being confirmed.
D-Link’s notice recommends reducing unnecessary public Internet exposure, restricting remote management unless required, and limiting administrative access to trusted systems and users. These are exposure-reduction measures. They do not establish that the vulnerability is eliminated or that the parser is unreachable in a particular network.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What to do now
- Verify the router. Check the device label for the exact model and hardware revision. Confirm that it is a DIR-822A before applying any model-specific guidance.
- Check the installed firmware. Use the router’s management interface to record its current firmware version. The published affected configuration is A_101; do not assume another version or hardware revision has the same status.
- Reduce unnecessary exposure. Avoid exposing the router or its management services directly to the public Internet when that access is not needed.
- Restrict remote management. Disable it if it is not required. If it is necessary, limit access to trusted networks or systems using the controls available in your deployment.
- Limit administrative access. Permit router administration only from trusted systems and users, using available network and firewall controls.
- Check D-Link support for your region. Monitor the applicable regional support page for changes to the advisory, affected scope, firmware availability, or lifecycle guidance. D-Link says its security bulletins are intended to provide information for assessing impact and customer action while limiting exploit-enabling detail; see its security advisories.
- Install only matching firmware. If D-Link publishes an update, verify that it is intended for the exact model and hardware revision, then follow the vendor’s release instructions. D-Link warns that firmware for one revision may not work with another. Do not use unofficial firmware or unverified workarounds.
How to decide whether to keep using the router
If you cannot reduce exposure enough for your needs, or you cannot wait for a vendor update, consider replacing the router rather than treating an unverified workaround as a fix. No replacement model has been assessed here. Before choosing one, confirm that it meets your WAN and Wi-Fi requirements, receives ongoing security updates, and lets you restrict management to trusted networks. A replacement should be selected for those support and deployment needs; there is no evidence that a particular model specifically neutralizes CVE-2026-86510.
Keep this issue distinct from another DIR-822A finding
D-Link’s SAP10516 notice also lists CVE-2026-86296, a separate issue involving the udhcpcd component. It is not the L2TP Control Message Parser flaw discussed here; check the vendor notice for that issue’s own status and guidance.
