Yes—cybersecurity cards can help introduce concepts and prompt active recall, but the strongest published example is a learning-and-discussion aid for selected software security topics, not a complete certification exam deck. For exam prep, use cards alongside current objectives, lessons, and practice questions.

What cybersecurity cards are designed to teach

A 2023 paper by Ryan Shah and co-authors, Introducing and Interfacing with Cybersecurity – A Cards Approach, proposes playing-card-style materials to make introductory cybersecurity knowledge easier to learn and discuss. The authors describe cards that can be used physically or digitally, with content grounded in the Cyber Security Body of Knowledge (CyBOK), a knowledge base developed by the University of Bristol and funded by the UK National Cyber Security Centre. Read the paper.

The deck draws on selected material from Human Factors, Malware & Attack Technologies, Software Security, Web & Mobile Security, and the Secure Software Lifecycle. Its intended learner is particularly someone with little or no cybersecurity expertise who writes software code. It should not be mistaken for a comprehensive cybersecurity curriculum or an exam-specific deck.

What the study does—and does not—show

The authors evaluated the cards in two user studies: a workshop with master’s-level students and a separate study with school-age participants aged 10 to 15. In those studies, 80% of participants agreed the cards provided introductory knowledge of cybersecurity topics, and 70% agreed they supported discussion and connections among attacks, vulnerabilities, and defences.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Those percentages report participant agreement, not exam-score gains, long-term retention, or proof that the format works equally well for every learner. The paper’s claim is narrower: cards can provide an approachable way into selected concepts and help people discuss how security ideas relate.

How to make a useful study deck

You can make a simple physical deck with blank index cards; this is a practical adaptation of the paper’s physical-card format, not a product tested or endorsed by its authors. Keep each card focused so it tests one useful idea rather than hiding several questions in a block of text.

  1. Choose a defined scope. Pick a topic, such as secure coding basics or a specific certification objective, before writing cards.
  2. Put a prompt on the front. Use a term, question, short scenario, or small code-related security problem.
  3. Write a concise answer on the back. Include a clear explanation and, where useful, an example or a connection to an attack, vulnerability, or defence.
  4. Test relationships as well as definitions. Ask what could cause a vulnerability, how an attacker might exploit it, or which defence reduces the risk. This reflects the discussion-oriented strength described in the paper.
  5. Check and revise. Compare technical claims with a reliable, current source and update a card when the underlying guidance or exam objectives change.

For digital cards, the same design principles apply. The format matters less than whether the prompt makes you retrieve an answer and whether the answer is accurate and sufficiently clear to correct a misunderstanding.

Using cards for a certification exam

Flashcards are a review format, not a guarantee of exam readiness. First check the official objectives for the exact exam version you plan to take. Then use cards to review terms, distinctions, and short scenarios, while relying on current course material and practice questions to cover breadth and apply knowledge in exam-like situations.

When evaluating any deck, check its coverage against the objectives, the date and sources behind its answers, the background it assumes, and whether it explains relationships or merely defines terms. Also verify whether it is physical or digital and when its content was last updated. A deck with polished presentation can still be incomplete or out of date.

Be careful with older Security+ resources

McGraw Hill’s page describes Glen E. Clarke’s CompTIA Security+ Certification Study Guide, Fourth Edition, for exam SY0-601. The page lists it as an eBook published September 3, 2021, with two-minute review drills, practice exams, lab exercises, video, and performance-based-question simulations. Because it is tied to SY0-601, check the current CompTIA objectives before treating it as preparation for a newer exam. See the publisher’s book page.
